5 Games That Should Feature Online Play

Nintendo has been slowly investing in bringing all of their cult classic game series to an elaborate online space.

Nintendo has been slowly investing in bringing all of their cult classic game series to an elaborate online space. After playing incredible games like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS and Mario Kart 8, I can’t help but wish some of my other all-time favorite games and series were playable online with friends. I have compiled a list of games (new and old) that I wish were online-capable.

Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)

Super Mario 3D World was an amazing game, and undoubtedly one of the best games of 2013. Sadly, 3D World only allowed couch co-op, with sparse online options available. This was upsetting because the game urges the player to play with friends, and I expected Nintendo to come into this generation chock-full of online games. Super Mario 3D World is better with friends, it’s just a fact! I would love if this title were playable with friends beyond the couch. However, online co-op could have a bigger role in the next iteration of Super Mario. Only time will tell.

Ice Hockey (NES)

Ice Hockey is simplicity at its finest. It was one of the first multiplayer games that made you want to rage quit and ring your friend’s neck. That reason alone is why I think it’s a necessity for this list. Ice Hockey online would be total 8-bit chaos! Match after match, the game never stops being enjoyable, especially with your pals. It’s nonstop action until the buzzer rings. Nintendo, bring this classic gem back to life, with online of course.

GoldenEye 007 (N64)

I want a virtual console re-release of this remarkable title that features online multiplayer. GoldenEye reached huge mass appeal when it released in 1995, and it’s still a blast to play today. There is no sense in telling you just how great this game is because you already know! GoldenEye changed the way people play games together–it’s considered to be one of the most important games in the history of first-person shooters. There was an incredible remake of this classic gem that released on Wii and did include online multiplayer. While it was awesome to play a newer, prettier version, nothing beats the nostalgia that the original GoldenEye 007 envelops you with.

Mario Party (N64 – Wii)

Mario Party is all about multiplayer. Needless to say that this series would be insanely fun played online. Sitting next to your friends on the couch and cranking up Mario Party just isn’t as common as it used to be, as we now live in a generation of couch-less co-op. All we can hope for is that when the franchise (inevitably) hits the Wii U, Nintendo will give it online multiplayer (hopefully even up to eight players). Utilizing the front-facing camera on the Wii U’s GamePad could be interesting. Being able to converse with and talk trash to your opponent ‘face to face’ sounds like a good time! The Mario Party franchise has been dying for some nuance that will bring the party back to life. Online multiplayer could be the antidote it needs.

ZombiU (Wii U)

One of ZombiU’s best attributes is its local multiplayer mode. When it comes to most zombie games, it’s normally a ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ ordeal. As one player is doing just that, the other is enthralled in a top-down, strategy puzzler(ish) mission to tear apart their buddy. If you haven’t tried this mode, it’s all about terrorizing and surrounding your friend with the undead in an attempt to eat their brains. Intrigued yet? You should be! ZombiU’s multiplayer is gripping, ghoulish, and most importantly, unique. Being able to play this survival horror shooter online is a no-brainer (pun intended).
