‘Destiny’ Review

After a separation from its own Halo brand, years of development and a monumental budget, Bungie’s first chapter of its epic sci-fi shooter franchise is finally here.

brand, years of development and a monumental budget, Bungie’s first chapter of its epic sci-fi shooter franchise is finally here. Like many gamers, we’ve been been playing a lot of Destiny over the last two weeks since its release. And we needed to before we could understand everything the game offers and assign a review score. We’ve also been playing it a lot because Destiny is highly addictive, but not necessarily for the right reasons.

Destiny takes place centuries into the future where Earth, and the now-colonized local planets in our solar system, have been mostly eradicated by what we can vaguely refer to as “The darkness.” There’s one remaining city on Earth, protected by a massive, floating spherical alien being known as the Traveler. It was this mysterious being that brought about the rapid evolution and expansion of humanity and who protects what remains on Earth. It’s also the Traveler that serves as the plot device behind the “Light”-powered abilities of the Guardians – the warriors players play as in Destiny that are divided into three familiar classes (Titans, Hunters and Warlocks).

The Traveler, the rise and fall of humanity, and the other alien species – some only playable, others only killable – are just little bits of the cool lore behind Destiny , lore that’s barely explored and detailed in the game. There’s sadly not much of a story to speak of in Destiny , which make the rare bits of dialogue between the game’s few characters feel even more odd and out of place. At the beginning of the game all players are introduced to a little robot ‘Ghost’ sidekick (voiced by Peter Dinklage) who, from mission to mission, offers plot information through exposition to pull players through, but most of it is uninteresting and forgettable because of how poorly it’s presented.

Destiny’s story and setting are rather lifeless. Of course, this is partly due to the game’s post-apocalyptic setting, but it’s mainly because Bungie took shortcuts and embraced dated MMO design philosophies in crafting the missions and environments. Invisible walls serving alien spawn locations are everywhere! Outside of the few scripted Ghost and Speaker (faceless man who represents the Traveler) scenes, and merchants in The Tower (the game’s social hub), there are no other characters to interact with. The story missions are relegated to running solo (or with up to two friends) and simply eradicating everything that moves. Same goes for the more challenging Strike missions which feature matchmaking to fill your three-person Fireteam. In between those missions or at any time after once unlocked, there are also ‘patrols’ where players explore the four maps they’ve already seen (Earth, the Moon, Venus and Mars) in the story missions and earn additional experience and reputation by picking up little side quests.

The side quests involve players approaching and activating flashing beacons which prompt narrated mission instructions from characters you won’t know anything about and all the objectives are practically the same. Like the worlds they take place in, the patrol and story missions are not dynamic or interactive enough, and as a result Destiny is largely disappointing and unoriginal as a first chapter in something we’re told is “just the beginning.” Even the public events in these areas, which involve killing a mini-boss or protecting an area for a few minutes, become quickly repetitive but still must be played for additional daily rewards. It’s very detached and lacking of that feeling of being involved in something epic or meaningful.

Bungie’s expertise in visual design, sound and gameplay mechanics saves the game and make Destiny something worth playing despite its flaws and omissions (and long load times). Destiny looks and plays very well, bolstered by artistically crafted menus, and is meant to be played with others. That really starts after playing through the game once through to hit its soft level cap. From there, to continue progressing and taking on Destiny’s most rewarding challenges, players must acquire rare, legendary and exotic armor and weapons, and that’s achieved through replaying the game’s cooperative strikes, daily/weekly challenges and the competitive multiplayer in order to collect certain, needed items.

This is both the best and worst part of Destiny . Strikes, which can be played with up to three players, are where the game shines, but there are only six of them. They don’t change much as the difficulty ramps up since it translates into simply putting more bullets on bosses, so while there’s something special about taking out aliens and even bigger aliens with friends, doing so repeatedly to level up, to complete bounties or for a small chance at gaining hard-to-acquire loot, may not be enough for all players.

The harsh grind is centered around Destiny’s problematic looting system which primarily gives players the same lower level (read: useless) gear through ‘ Engrams‘ – items that need to be decoded. Picking up the rarest Engrams inexplicably rewards players mostly with less-valuable items, and when added to the already-demanding repetition, there are multiple layers of Destiny throwing up walls to prevent players getting something new and leveling up their Guardians.

This is how the game can be addictive because players must attain certain gear to play some parts of the game, but punishing at the same time for how that’s achieved. Destiny even holds back players from buying gear at vendors by making them grind for reputation points. Players are also expected to run in circles or “ farm” on worlds to pick up resources and loot chests for materials to upgrade, an obsolete MMO mechanic which is painfully dull and unnecessary. When you do get that legendary or exotic weapon though, or cool color shaders to change the look of your armor, it does feel good.

While a cooperative-focused title, Destiny sadly does not support local play on the same console or via LAN, something Bungie were champions of in the Halo days. Destiny may really depend on who you play with so if you don’t have equally-leveled friends playing on the same system, you’ll need to reach out to strangers since matchmaking isn’t supported in the daily/weekly challenges or the game’s high-level raids.

Destiny also features competitive multiplayer, dubbed ‘ The Crucible‘, which actually lets players use their same characters from the main game, even down to the unlocked abilities and high level gear. It’s an interesting design decision to let players grow their characters in multiplayer before finishing the level-specific story missions, but the game lets players boost the difficulty on story missions, even if it does present a problem with balancing on the competitive side.

Most modes in The Crucible balance out weapon damage so low and high level players can fairly compete, but it doesn’t account for players who have more abilities unlocked or special features on higher level guns and armor. Add to that the unique powers of the three classes and corresponding subclasses, which are unbalanced, and multiplayer can be frustrating at times depending on the mix of players or team sizes. It’s a neat concept and a great way to earn additional loot, and there are even bounties specific to The Crucible, but like the main game, the competitive multiplayer is half-baked and lacking in creativity. There are some great maps, but no new or innovative modes compared to other shooters, and certainly less on the variety and vehicle front than Bungie’s past efforts.

Destiny Level 27 Hunter - Failcube

Destiny Level 27 Hunter - Failcube

Destiny is the type of game where there’s a lot to enjoy if you make the most of it. Putting in an effort to coordinate with others to tackle certain bounties or challenges is just plain fun, and the story and other stuff isn’t required for that sort of cooperative experience. That’s where Destiny is at its best and where it can build from in expansions and sequels. As the launching pad for a new franchise however, Destiny ultimately feels incomplete, yet it’s still a game we can easily recommend for shooter fans. At the time of this writing I’ve put in 59 hours and 49 minutes into Destiny (my hunter and gear pictured above) and have acquired legendary or exotic gear for every weapon and armor slot. And I’m still interested in getting online to try the raid with friends so that speaks volumes to where Destiny succeeds and how much potential it has.

Destiny is available now for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Game Rant played the PS4 version for review.

Sad Ben Affleck Used to Promote Dark Souls 3

Sad Ben Affleck Used to Promote Dark Souls 3

Bandai Namco releases a unique advertisement for Dark Souls 3 that uses the ‘Sad Ben Affleck’ footage from when the actor was promoting Batman v Superman .

By now, many people have seen the “Sad Ben Affleck” video, which stems from an interview the actor was giving alongside Batman v Superman co-star Henry Cavill, in which the pair were asked about their reaction to the film’s negative reviews. In the video, Cavill speaks at length about Batman v Superman ‘s poor critical reception, whereas Ben Affleck sits silently, with a sad expression on his face, as Simon and Garfunkel’s depressing song “The Sound of Silence” plays in the background.

Bandai Namco has decided to capitalize on the popularity of the “Sad Ben Affleck” video by creating a version that can be used to promote Dark Souls 3 . In Bandai Namco’s version, Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are asked to recall their memories of the original Dark Souls , and then footage is added to make it appear as though Affleck is having flashbacks to dying numerous times in the game.

See Sad Ben Affleck think about his time with the first Dark Souls game during a faux interview about Dark Souls 3 right here:

When you really think about how much you've enjoyed #DarkSoulsover the years. https://t.co/eNadvNR8UL

— Dark Souls (@DarkSoulsGame) April 7, 2016

As far as Dark Souls 3 advertisements go, this one is pretty funny and unique, but it’s not even the weirdest way Bandai Namco has promoted the game so far. Besides relying on traditional promotional tactics like Dark Souls 3 gameplay trailers, the company has also hosted a Dark Souls 3 hot wing eating contestto advertise the game.

Having said that, this Sad Ben Affleck video is a bit cleverer than the hot wing eating contest, as it plays on the franchise’s reputation of being “hard” compared to other video games. This reputation has led to players going to extraordinary lengths to tackle challenges in the series in strange ways, such as a player that defeated the first boss in Dark Souls 3 using only his fists.

At any rate, this type of marketing that plays on popular Internet memes like Sad Ben Affleck will likely become more common moving forward. Using humor has always been an effective marketing tool, and it’s even more effective when it plays on a popular trend, like Batman v Superman and Sad Ben Affleck. Whether or not Sad Ben Affleck thinking about Dark Souls will result in more copies of Dark Souls 3 being sold remains to be seen, but one has to credit Bandai Namco for thinking outside the box when it comes to marketing the game.

Dark Souls 3 will be available on April 12 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Destiny’s Creative Lead Leaves Bungie

Destiny’s Creative Lead Leaves Bungie

807
The creative lead for Destiny ‘s story announces that he’s leaving Bungie after a thirteen year career and only six months at the position he was appointed in November.

CJ Cowan, the mind most recently behind the continuously evolving story of Destiny , announced earlier this week that he would be leaving Bungie after a thirteen year career. Cowan chose not to divulge what, if any, plans he might have going forward, but it’s a fairly shocking decision given that he had only been made story creative lead for Destiny in November 2015. Whether or not his departure has anything to do with his recent involvement with Destiny will remain a mystery, but losing a thirteen-year veteran of the studio will make finding a replacement no easy task for Bungie.

According to Cowan’s LinkedIn resume, the former creative lead started at Bungie in 2003 and worked on Halo 2 as a cinematic designer. He later became director of cinematics for Halo 3 , Halo 3: ODST , and Halo: Reach , later becoming the lead story designer for Destiny right before his eventual departure. Any studio looking for someone with extensive experience in crafting space dramas like Destiny or Halo won’t be likely to find anyone more qualified than Cowan in the near future.

Of course, Bungie might already have a plan for Destiny ‘s story now that Cowan is gone. It wasn’t that long ago that Chris Schlerf, the lead writer for Mass Effect: Andromeda , left BioWare to join Bungie‘s staff. Given the pedigree Schlerf brings to Bungie, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him slotted into Cowan’s former position and handed even more creative control over the series than anyone before him.

Still, any sort of departure from the Destiny team is news these days, as Bungie has had to put out a lot of external fires during the game’s second year and can ill-afford to begin focusing on interior crises as well. Despite fans begging Bungie for news on the game’s Year 2 content, the developer has stubbornly refused to divulge any information about major content updates, instead looking to appease fans with the usual monthly updates and small PvE or PvP fixes.

That approach, however, has lead to a major crisis in faith for many of Destiny ‘s most dedicated players. When popular community figures like TripleWRECK begin discussing the game’s lack of content, it should make the good folks at Bungie spring into action. While Cowan’s departure is significant, Destiny has a lot more to worry about than improving its narrative in the months to come.

What do you think about Destiny ‘s creative lead leaving after just six months on the job? Do you think it has anything to do with the game’s current state, or is it simply a case of needing a change of scenery? Let us know in the comments below.

Destiny: Xur Location and Exotic Items for April 8-10

Destiny: Xur Location and Exotic Items for April 8-10

47
We have the early scoop on where to find the vendor Xur and what exotic armor and weapons he has available to Destiny players for the weekend of April 8.

Destiny ‘s big April Update is just four days away. This week, Bungie went over some of the balancing and sandbox changescoming with the update. Warlocks are getting reworked a bit, there are big changes coming to the revive mechanic, and MIDA Multi-Toolmight be a little less popular.

With Destiny ‘s new 1-for-1 Infusion systemcoming into effect this coming Tuesday, it might be a good idea to pick up any exotics from Xur players don’t have. For most fans who probably already have Xur’s stock, there’s something else in his inventory that could be worth your coins.

Xur Inventory April 8

Xur Inventory April 8

This week, Xur can be found in Tower North to the right of the Speaker. Once you spawn into the Tower, head left and take the tunnel to the north side of the Tower. Keep going straight past where the Speaker is and Xur will be near the railing.

For armor, Xur has the Crest of Alpha Lupi chest armor for Titans, the Don’t Touch Me gauntlets for Hunters, and The Impossible Machines gauntlets for Warlocks.

There is no exotic weapon this week. Taking its place is instead an exotic chest armor engram, which may prove more useful than any weapon this Agent of the Nine could have brought.

Bungie hasn’t clarified whether exotic engrams players hold onto after the April Update will decrypt into new exotics at the new Light level; however, chances are good that they will.

Also, many players may be searching for the Titan chest armor Twilight Garrison. If players get lucky, decrypting these exotic chest pieces could result in dropping this coveted piece of armor.

So, either rolling for Twilight Garrison or buying some exotic engrams to stock up for the April Update would be a good use of Strange Coins this week. Don’t bother picking up the exotic gauntlet engrams—they are Legacy engrams, which means they will drop Year 1 exotics at Year 1 levels, without the Infusion option. Ignore them.

For a full rundown of Xur’s items and prices see the list below:

Crest of Alpha Lupi (Titan Chest Armor) – 13 Strange Coins Don’t Touch Me (Hunter Gauntlets) – 13 Strange Coins The Impossible Machines (Warlock Gauntlets) – 13 Strange Coins Exotic Chest Engram – 19 Strange Coins

Rogue One Trailer Remade in Fallout 4

Rogue One Trailer Remade in Fallout 4

122
Fallout 4 has proven to be one of the premiere games for modders, and one fan of the Star Wars universe demonstrates why with his recreation of a new trailer.

The Fallout 4 modding community has done it again. There seems to be no limit to what creative minds can do in Bethesda’s smash-hit RPG, whether it be bringing The Notorious B.I.G. to the Commonwealth Wastelandor letting gamers play as Dogmeat instead of the Sole Survivor. While many of these kinds of mods are quirky, fun, or downright strange, however, there is also the capacity to create some truly breathtaking works of art within the modding tools Bethesda has provided with its newest post-apocalyptic adventure. YouTuber UpIsNotJump is one such example, faithfully recreating famous or popular movie trailers using only the impressive world of Fallout 4 (and some helpful mods) to do so.

UpIsNotJump’s greatest triumph may be his most recent trailer remake. Between the sci-fi subterfuge, battles involving giant robots, and mixture of old world weaponry with high tech blasters, Rogue One seems like the perfect fit for the Fallout 4 universe, and UpIsNotJump seems to agree. Check out the video below to see just how incredible the Rogue One / Fallout 4 mash-up trailer really is.

UpIsNotJump’s trailer goes shot for shot with the original Rogue One video, and it’s hard not to be impressed by how accurate the Fallout 4 remake is. Whether it’s the various wardrobe choices worn by Jyn Erso over the course of the trailer or the samurai-esque stand-off between Donnie Yen’s character and various Stormtroopers, UpIsNotJump’s remake manages to faithfully reproduce them all without so much as missing a beat. Even when the current mods available were unable to recreate the AT ATs featured in the original trailer, UpIsNotJump lets some creativity and humor shine through, replacing them with a collection of Liberty Primesinstead.

The amount of detail that went into the Rogue One trailer remake is further evidence of just how committed the Fallout 4 community is to their game of choice. That’s good news for Bethesda, as the developer recently released a new Survival Mode in Fallout 4 in an effort to keep gamers engaged with the Commonwealth while the developer gears up for larger DLC releases later this year. It’s possible that some of that content has already leaked, too, as a player data mined information that appeared to pertain to the upcoming Far Harbor DLC– if that is the case, Bethesda will be happy to have modders like UpIsNotJump providing worthwhile distractions like the Rogue One trailer remake while the developer attempts to keep its remaining surprises a secret.

What did you think of the Fallout 4 Rogue One trailer? What movie would you like to see get the Fallout 4 treatment next? Let us know in the comments below.

Fallout 4 Mod Puts Notorious B.I.G. in the Game

Fallout 4 Mod Puts Notorious B.I.G. in the Game

888
One fan of Fallout 4 gives rapper The Notorious B.I.G. life after death by putting Biggie Smalls in Bethesda’s retro-futuristic RPG with the use of mods.

Throughout the history of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic franchise, there have been plenty of different faces for the game’s Mysterious Stranger (which happens to be one of our picks for the best perks in the seriespre- Fallout 4 ), but now, thanks to modder Gyashaa, the character will be replaced by Brooklyn’s own Notorious B.I.G should fans install the script. Interestingly enough, however, Big Poppa chooses not to sport the Mysterious Stranger’s typical brown trench coat, and instead goes with his iconic, albeit more conspicuous all-white three-piece suit, complete with Homburg hat to match.

Called “The Mysterious B.I.G.”, the mod not only prompts Biggie to show up by surprise when players combine the VATS combat modeand the Mysterious Stranger perk, but it also plays one of 20 different songs from the late rapper’s oeuvre while he polishes off a bad guy with his revolver. As Gyashaa explains on the mod’s NexusMods page, the inspiration behind putting the Notorious B.I.G. insimply stemmed from the desire “to show respect to one of the greatest rappers of all time.”

Gyashaa’s mod doesn’t really alter Fallout 4 ‘s gameplay all that much, but it definitely injects a sense of style and flair that’s uncommon in the title’s Boston Commonwealth. Nevertheless, whether one’s a fan of Notorious B.I.G. or just enjoys the action-RPG itself, they would do well to watch the video below, as it compiles all of the different tracks included in the mod, with the subject matter from the majority of the rapper’s lyrics syncing up perfectly with the situation.

Of course, Gyashaa’s “The Mysterious B.I.G.” mod is far from the first fan-made alteration for Fallout 4 , but it’s quite possibly one of the most ingenious scripts put together since the title’s release. While the wackier, more off-the-wall creations like the Macho Man modand the Thomas the Tank Engine mod are certainly entertaining, it’s not every day that fans are able to incorporate such a fitting pop culture reference into the game.

Naturally, there are plenty of mods out there which are a lot more useful than “The Mysterious B.I.G.” that fans can install for Fallout 4 , such as those that improve performance, or more specifically, the mod helping keep track of companions. Unfortunately, though, until Bethesda makes mods available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, PC fans are the only ones able to reap their benefits at the moment.

What do you think about the mod that adds Notorious B.I.G. to Fallout 4 ? Have you found any that actually tops Gyashaa’s contribution to the game? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Fallout 4 Player Uncovers New Far Harbor Details After Data Mine

Fallout 4 Player Uncovers New Far Harbor Details After Data Mine

394
After discovering a number of files for the upcoming Far Harbor DLC for Fallout 4 , a gamer uncovers a number of details on what the expansion may contain.

The first of Fallout 4 ‘s three expansions,, was released last week to good reviews, but it appears that the upcoming Far Harbor DLC pack is the one that gamers are most excited about. However, beyond revealing that is larger than the sizableexpansion for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion , and that it will take place on a mysterious new island, not much is known about the upcomingDLC pack. Thanks to the efforts of one Reddit user, though, some light has been shed on what to expect in Far Harbor.

Using the Bethesda Archive Extractor program, Reddit user WilliamWallace2K14recently stumbled across some Far Harbor files in a folder titled “DLC03” and decided to do some good old-fashioned data mining. One of the first things WilliamWallace came across was a new variant of Yao Guai, called the Ghoul Yao Guai. While a new Yao Guai variant is quite welcome, this discovery pales in comparison to what he found next.

After some more digging around, WilliamWallace found some textures for what appears to be a Giant Squid. If this Giant Squid were to be included in Far Harbor , it would add an interesting new dimension to proceedings, especially for those gamers who were scouring every Fallout 4 oceanfor secrets. For those who are curious about what this Giant Squid may look like, check out some of WilliamWallace’s screenshots of the Squid’s supposed textures.

Aside from a couple of interesting new enemies, WilliamWallace also found some files relating to that secret Harpoon Gunthat gamers found a few months ago. It remains to be seen whether this Harpoon Gun will see the light of day, but its addition will definitely provide something new to ‘s gun combat.

Based on the details that have been gleaned from the Far Harbor files, some of this discovered content was among the list of cool things cut fromThis suggests that rather than cutting out content that wasn’t needed, Bethesda was actually saving some of the best stuff as part of Fallout 4 ‘s post-launch plans. With the prospect of new enemies, underwater combat, and new underwater quests to go through, Far Harbor is definitely shaping up as the most intriguing Fallout 4 DLC yet.

While the Far Harbor expansion is expected to launch in May, Fallout 4 is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Fallout 4 Automatron DLC Gives Codsworth ‘Sexy Legs’

Fallout 4 Automatron DLC Gives Codsworth ‘Sexy Legs’

501
A new Fallout 4 video shows Codsworth strutting around on some new ‘sexy legs’ from the Automatron DLC, which is just about as alarming as one might think it is.

Fallout 4 ‘s Automatron DLC has been out for lass than a week, and it took exactly that long for someone to combine the words ‘Codsworth’ and ‘Sexy Legs’. The stalwart robotic butler usually floats around the Commonwealth, but thanks to the robot-building features of the latestexpansion, he can finally perfect his fashion runway stride thanks to a pair of Assaultron legs.

Codsworth may be able to say many names, but we like to imagine this latest development left him speechless.

Automatron introduces the ability to mix and match robotic parts onto various AI companions, and pits players against a big new baddie called The Mechanist. While most gamers focus on building from the strongest combination of available parts, it’s clear that some players have other intentions in mind. In the words of a different butler than Codsworth, “Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

Here’s a video showing Codsworth strutting his stuff with the new legs:

While Codsworth is certainly one of the more memorable robotic companions of the Fallout franchise, the Automatron DLC focuses on the introduction of ADA, a robot built from a combination of Assaultron and Protectron parts. Upon encountering her, she will inform the player about the Commonwealth’s newest threat: robots built The Mechanist, which are attacking everyone in the Commonwealth indiscriminately.

Though Automatron has only been out for a few days, it hasn’t taken YouTubers long to make some creative videos with the new content. We’d stated that Fallout 4 should have the robobrain 3 months ago, and when Automatron re-reintroduced the iconic robot to the franchise, it took only a matter of days for someone to make a battle video involving a thousand of them.

Automatron is far from the last portion of expanded content for Fallout 4, as Bethesda is scheduled to have some Pokemon -esque DLC cued up for April, which will then be followed-up by Bethesda’s largest slice of downloadable content everin May. PC fans can also rejoice in the fact that the long-awaited Survival Mode will be included in a beta update next week.

Between robotics, animal training, survival, and new landscapes, Bethesda Games Studios has a full content schedule for the next few months, giving them – like Codsworth – some strong legs to stand on.

We’ll have a review of the robot-building DLC posted soon! Gamers can also check out another Codsworth Legs video that shows a more sultry gait here.

What do you think of Codsworth’s leg game, Ranters?

50% Off Fallout 4 and Season Pass in GMG Spring Sale

50% Off Fallout 4 and Season Pass in GMG Spring Sale

Update 3/1: Its encore time!

Update 3/1: Its encore time! All the deals listed below from GMG, including Fallout 4 Season Pass is now back until Friday morning.

You might have known that on Tuesday, Fallout 4’s first Season Pass DLC ‘Automatron’ became available, but did you know that Tuesday was also the first time a digital Steam copy of Fallout 4 was below the magical 50% off price point?

Earlier this week digital retailer Green Man Gaming scooped the Steam Store and launched their very own Spring PC gaming salewith discounts on games up to 80% off. Their sale included titles from well-known publishers such as Bethesda, Warner Bros., and Valve.

Overall the deals are pretty good, but let’s cut to the chase: you can use a stacking coupon code (listed below) to get even more savings from this Spring Sale. This means the 38% discount to titles like Fallout 4 suddenly becomes 50% off at $29. And even its recently priced hikedSeason Pass now makes a return to $24 (also 50% off). Good timing considering Automatron , the first DLC pack in the Season Pass, just launched a day ago.

We’ve listed all the good prices from the Spring Sale, so you don’t have to wade through the thousands of titles available. (But if you want, they can all be found here). All games listed below activate on Steam. Update: Now that the previous publisher deals have expired, we’ve added deals from 2K Games and more below.

Coupon Code to Use: DEALZON20

Bethesda
2K Games
Capcom Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition: $20(Steam) Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition: $12(Steam) Ultra Street Fighter IV: $12(Steam) DMC: Devil May Cry: $7.20(Steam) Ultra Street Fighter IV Upgrade: $6(Steam) Lost Planet 3: $5(Steam) Dead Rising 2: Off the Record: $4.80(Steam) Remember Me: $4.80(Steam)
Warner Bros.
Valve

While this sale is days ahead of Steam’s very own Spring Sale, our bet is that most titles above will likely be cheaper than any upcoming discounts at the Steam Store thanks to the stacking coupon code. For comparison sake, the Steam Store currently has Fallout 4 on sale for $40.19, a whole $10 more for the same exact Steam key. If you missed out on the deals above from the first part of the sale, check back towards the end of the sale period (around April 5th) to see if GMG does any “encore sale” where past deals returns.

Sony Cancels Fallout 4 Season Pass Orders Following Pricing Glitch

Sony Cancels Fallout 4 Season Pass Orders Following Pricing Glitch

444
PlayStation 4 owners who managed to download the Fallout 4 season pass for free over the weekend will be disappointed to hear that their purchase has been revoked by Sony.

A price glitch on the PlayStation Store that allowed users to download the Fallout 4 season pass for free has now been fixed. Anyone who managed to take advantage of the error will not be able to use the pass to download the content, as Sony has chosen to apply an expiry date.

Last Friday, the European PlayStation Store briefly made theseason pass available for free. This situation didn’t last for long, but users were quick to share the information online, giving many customers the opportunity to make a purchase ahead of the DLC being released.

Given that today sees the launch of the game’s first scheduled DLC pack, those who managed to download the pass for free were eager to see if they had managed to cheat the system. However, Sony has rendered those downloads unusable and removed access to the content from users’ purchase history.

All in all, this is a rather unsurprising development. It’s impossible to know exactly how many users managed to nab the season pass before the issue was fixed, but there’s little reason for Sony to foot the bill on this kind of blunder — even if it’s a disappointment to affected users.

Fallout 4 Automatron DLC Achievements Revealed - Fallout 4 Automatron expansion

Fallout 4 Automatron DLC Achievements Revealed - Fallout 4 Automatron expansion

In fairness, Bethesda already offered an opportunity to download the pass at a reduced price. As of March 1, the cost of the package jumped from $29.99 to $49.99— it’s thought that DLC plans were still being finalized in the early part of 2016, and the broad scope of the project made a price hike necessary.

The first piece of content included is Automatron , which adds the ability to construct and customize a robot companion. As well as this new mechanic and some new gear, the DLC contains a new questline that will take players to a pair of lengthy new dungeons.

Set for release in the coming months are two more expansions; Wasteland Workshop and Far Harbor . The former seems to be a relatively minor content drop that focusses on trapping creatures and extra settlement design options, whereas the latter is billed as the largest piece of DLC scheduled for the game.

Those two pieces of content are set to follow Automatron in the coming months. Sony and Bethesda will no doubt be hoping that there are no more pricing issues to clean up in the interim.

Fallout 4 is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Fallout 4: Watch 1,000 Robobrains Battle the Brotherhood of Steel

Fallout 4: Watch 1,000 Robobrains Battle the Brotherhood of Steel

182
One fan of Fallout 4 orchestrates a grand scale battle between man and machine, as 1,000 Robobrains take on an army of soldiers from the Brotherhood of Steel.

In order to celebrate Fallout 4 ‘s recent release of its Automatron DLC, the modder and YouTuber known as UpIsNotJump has created a video depicting the expansion’s Mechanist – that is, the add-on’s main baddie – and 1,000 of the villain’s Robobrains invading the Boston Commonwealth in a bid to rule the Wasteland. Of course, stepping up to defend the realm against the rise of the machines is‘s Elder Maxon and a battalion of power armor-wearing Brotherhood of Steel Knights, as they stand firm within the strongholds of a grounded base and the faction’s Prydwen airship.

For those unaware, UpIsNotJump’s fan-made footage for Fallout 4 is the latest in a slew of videos made by the open world title’s community, as there have been numerous large-scale skirmishes put together in the past and posted to YouTube. In fact, one of the most popular creations of its kind was made by the modder Cosmic Contrarian, who crafted a turf war that had 20,000 robots battling the entirety of the Commonwealth.

Not to be outdone, though, as seen in UpIsNotJump’s video below, the fight between the Robobrains and the Brotherhood of Steel is quite well done, as the YouTuber’s camera work and editing skills are on point. Not to mention, he’s even able to inject a bit of dramatic tension not found in a lot of other similarly-themed battle clips by staging a face-to-face between Elder Maxon and the Mechanist that’s definitely well worth a viewing.

Considering the fact that UpIsNotJump’s forte as of late has been to use Fallout 4 to remake pop culture pieces such as the second trailer, and Marvel’s Season 2 trailer for its Daredevil series on Netflix, the YouTuber’s foray into something outside of his comfort zone has yielded impressive results. Bearing that in mind, UpIsNotJump’s video is sure to motivate some fans into purchasing Fallout 4 ‘s Automatron DLC, which can be obtained in one of two ways. As it happens, gamers can get it in the title’s Season Pass for $50, which will include all future add-ons, or the expansion can be bought as a standalone for $10.

At any rate, since Fallout 4 ‘s first expansion inspired UpIsNotJump to make the video above, it stands to reason that after the release date of all three planned DLC packs, the YouTuber will have his own take on all of Bethesda’s retro-futuristic wares. However, we can only guess as to what kind of footage he will come up with next.

What did you think about UpIsNotJump’s massive Robobrain versus Brotherhood of Steel fight for Fallout 4 ? Which of the community’s battle videos has been your favorite so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Fallout 4 Mod Lets You Play as Dogmeat

Fallout 4 Mod Lets You Play as Dogmeat

625
A new mod for Fallout 4 allows the player to swap their human character form for that of beloved canine sidekick Dogmeat, complete with a dog-sized Pip Boy.

Although the Fallout series is chock full of interesting an memorable characters, it’s the loyal animal companion Dogmeat that is perhaps the most important of the lot. With the canine ally playing an important role in a number of games in the series, Dogmeat even picked up an award for Top Video Game Dogat this year’s World Dog Awards. Now, a new Fallout 4 mod allows the player to take on the role of Dogmeat himself.

The mod, from Nexus Modsuser and creator Abbalovesyou, grants the player the chance to enjoy the game from the beginning as Dogmeat – or any other wasteland-dwelling dog. Rather than the usual player-created Bostonian, instead begins in a somewhat more hirsute manner. The player’s usual combat choices are also amended, with the canine player character instead having a selection of different bite attacks.

Players may find it a little odd to hear the main character’s voice coming out of the canine, rather than Dogmeat’s trademark barks and growls. The bizarre nature of the mod certainly has its own charms, however, with the player character even being granted a dog-sized Pip Boy, which unfortunately doesn’t work in a first person view. The player’s dog-of-choice can even meet up with the real Dogmeat, giving the proceedings the feel of a post-apocalyptic Homeward Bound .

Fallout 4 Play As Dogmeat Conversation

Fallout 4 Play As Dogmeat Conversation

It’s not the first time that Dogmeat has been the focus of the modding community. Some of this fan-made content has tried to improve the player’s experience, such as granting the dog companion a backpack to increase Dogmeat’s storage space. Meanwhile, another mod made an aesthetic change to make Dogmeat look like the white wolf Amaterasu from Okami .

Although allowing players to make a canine character may seem like an odd choice for a mod, it’s far from the weirdest choice that modders have chosen to create. In fact, Bethesda’s action RPG has proved to be quite the muse for a number of budding mod creators. Perhaps one of the best, and most terrifying, mods available is one that changes deathclaws into Thomas the Tank Engine.

Although this mod is currently only available to PC players, it hopefully won’t be long before console players can get in on the fun. Bethesda is expecting to roll out official mod supportfor PC at some point in April, with console functionality following at some point in the future. When that content finally makes it to consoles, there will hopefully be even more wonderful mods available to players.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Nuk3town Map is Free for Everyone

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Nuk3town Map is Free for Everyone

458
Activision and Treyarch make Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ‘s Nuketown map free on current-gen platforms for all players of the futuristic first-person shooter.

For those unaware, upon Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ‘s launch back in November 2015, the Nuketown map was only available if fans pre-orderedthe game. Now, thankfully, Activision and Treyarch are making its updated version of the fan-favorite multiplayer area freely accessible to all players on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

On top of the map being free, developers are also offering up what is known as the Nuk3town Personalization Pack — that is, DLC themed after the map— with no additional purchase required for the aforementioned platforms. This means that players will also get new weapon camouflage and gun reticles, as well as a similarly styled calling card for.

As seen in the announcement trailer below, the first-person shooter’s developers take fans through a brief history of Nuketown’s origins from the first two Black Ops games, to its Declassified version, and all the way up through the franchise’s most recent iteration by showing how combat works in the area. However, the footage doesn’t reveal Nuketown’s well-known Easter egginvolving the unlockable zombie mannequins found posted up around the map.

Now that Nuketown is free for all players on current generation platforms — PS3 and Xbox 360 fans are stuck with base materials— Treyarch has announced it will be launching a 24/7 playlist for the next week that specifically features the futuristic shooter’s revamped map. Not to mention, fans will also see Nuketown crop up throughout main map rotation across a variety of different multiplayer playlists.

The decision made on the behalf of Black Ops 3 ‘s developers to start including Nuketown as a free map is a smart one. In doing so, Activision and Treyarch can ensure the satisfaction of those players who didn’t put money down for the game before its release by now allowing them to take part in the map’s action, while the companies are also able to retain all of the benefits from using Nuketown to  incentivize Black Ops 3 pre-purchases last year. Basically, it’s a win for practically everyone involved in the title’s production and post-launch play.

What do you think about Activision and Treyarch finally offering up Nuketown for free in the multiplayer modes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ? Should both of the companies have included the map without having required fans to pre-order the title from the very beginning? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments below.

Black Ops 3 on PS4 for Under $35 Right Now

Black Ops 3 on PS4 for Under $35 Right Now

An online listing for Activision and Treyarch’s military first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 lists the game’s price under $35 for PlayStation 4.

For those PlayStation 4 fans who have been hankering to pick up Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 , but have been waiting for a price drop, now is probably the best time to snag the title, for Amazon is running a deal that currently has the futuristic FPS’ physical copies for the PS4 listed at $32.62. On top ofbeing marked down for Sony’s current generation console, the PC and Xbox One ports of the game have also been reduced in price, albeit not as drastically as the PS4 iteration, with PC copies going for $38.95, and Xbox One versions being sold for $39.88.

The Black Ops 3 sale not only extends to the newest platforms, but also to last generation consoles. As a matter of fact, the prices for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions are the lower than the game on current-gen, with the former being marked down to $24.28, and the latter being just slightly more expensive at $25.92. Of course, it’s worth noting that the extremely inexpensive listings for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Black Ops 3 are likely due to the titles being on older systems, and having no campaign of which to speak, with only multiplayer to sustain them.

Naturally, as is the case with any online retailer, especially Amazon, prices for products tend to change at rapid rates, so by the time fans head over to the site to purchase a copy of Black Ops 3 , the sale could have expired. Nevertheless, it’s safe to presume that the reduced cost for the title will remain relatively low — that is, under $40 — at least for the remainder of the day.

black-ops-3-35-dollar-deal

It’s highly likely that developers have enacted the sale for Black Ops 3 due to the game’s Eclipse DLC releasing soon on April 19, and Activision and Treyarch want fans to scoop up a cheaper copy beforehand to use their savings on the expansion pack. After all, Eclipse is going to be obtainable for $15, and should Call of Duty fans jump on this deal now, the difference in the original cost of the base game when compared to the reduced price will leave those who take advantage of the sale with roughly $20-$25 to spend on the DLC.

If fans do decide to purchase the currently discounted Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and get the Eclipse DLC upon its release, they will receive all that the standard game has to offer, including the expansion pack’s four multiplayer maps of Knockout, Rift, Spire, and Verge (a remake of World at War ‘s Banzai), as well as a new Zombies map called Zetsubou No Shima. However, PC and Xbox One fans will have about a month’s wait before Eclipse will be available for their platforms after its launch due to a DLC exclusivity deal between Activision and Sonyto bring any add-ons to PlayStation first. With any luck, though, such timed-exclusives will eventually go on to be phased out completely.

What do you think about this deal for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ? Will you be picking up a copy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Black Ops 3’s Awakening DLC Gets Release Date for PC, Xbox One

Black Ops 3’s Awakening DLC Gets Release Date for PC, Xbox One

137
Publisher Activision and developer Treyarch announce the official release date for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ‘s Awakening DLC on PC and Xbox One platforms.

As many gamers are aware, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ‘s Awakening DLCis already live for PlayStation 4 consoles after having launched at the beginning of the month, which has left PC and Xbox One fans waiting to take part in the first of 2016’s expansion packs for the futuristic first-person shooter. However, Activision and Treyarch have now confirmed that theplayers that are currently experiencing the game without add-ons can mark their calendars, as Awakening will be available for all current generation platforms starting March 3.

Thanks to Sony’s and Activision’s partnership for timed-exclusive DLCto release on PlayStation before PC and Xbox, a lot of Black Ops 3 fans still have some waiting left to do in order to get their hands on the game’s new content, as there’s about two weeks in between now and the expansion pack’s launch for the platforms. Of course, as some folks may know, the shoe was on the other foot not long ago, as the game publisher had originally shared such an exclusivity deal with Microsoft’s consoles.

As of now, PC fans and Xbox One owners are missing out on Awakening’s four multiplayer maps (Skyjacked, Splash, Gauntlet, and Rise), as well as Black Ops 3 ‘s new Zombies map known as Der Eisendrache, which contains numerous Easter eggs. Of course, once the DLC finally becomes available across all of the aforementioned platforms, gamers will be able to nab an individual copy of Awakening for $15 in the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, or on Steam, with each iteration housing the exact same content.

While Black Ops 3 ‘s first bout of bonus materials haven’t made it to PC or Xbox One yet, at least those fans can count their lucky stars that they’re not stuck in the last-gen, as Call of Duty players on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 won’t ever get anything that Awakening has to offer. Of course, with the newest consoles having existed since 2013, the fact that Activision and Treyarch even developed assets for PS3 and Xbox 360at all is a wonder.

Awakening is merely 2016’s initial offering of DLC for Black Ops 3 , as developers have three more expansion packs planned for the title. Needless to say, PlayStation 4 players will get first dibs on any of the forthcoming add-ons with about a month-long waiting period for other platforms.

Considering the fact that PC and Xbox One fans have been stranded with Black Ops 3 ‘s base game for now, Activision and Treyarch ought to make a killing once the timed-exclusivity for Awakening expires. Plus, with the most recent entry in the Call of Duty franchise having been 2015’s highest selling game, the publisher and developer will surely be rolling in the dough by the end of the year once all of Black Ops 3 ‘s DLC packs have been released.

Black Ops 3 Map Pays Homage to Marshawn Lynch

Black Ops 3 Map Pays Homage to Marshawn Lynch

417
Developer Treyarch uses Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 to pay homage to the Seattle Seahawks’ former running back Marshawn Lynch for his recent retirement.

Considering Marshawn Lynch’s turn as a villainin Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 , the video game developer decided it would pay tribute to the popular Seattle Seahawks’ running back’s retirement in the first-person shooter’s multiplayer map Combine. Interestingly enough, the nod is subtle, as the studio decided to make several changes to some of the lab numbers in the level by altering them to reflect Lynch’s NFL jersey number of 24, and his University of California, Berkeley number of 10.

Treyarch quietly made the changes in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 with no official announcement, but even so, the dedication to Lynch is definitely pretty great. After all, not only did the former National Football League star make a cameo in the game, but he also spent a decent amount of his time promoting it as well, doing numerous ads and press junkets for the release prior to the title’s launch.

Plus, with Lynch having made his retirement announcement on this year’s Super BowlSunday earlier this week, developers certainly did a good job by making the changes so quickly. For those fans interested to check out the newly minted Easter eggs, they can watch YouTuber chaosxsilencer’s video below documenting the alterations.

The decision made by Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ‘s development team to emblazon Lynch’s jersey number across the Combine map may be a small one, but at the very least, it shows that Treyarch is a company that is projecting itself as being on the pulse of current events. Not to mention, making the changes is a solid show of appreciation on the studio’s part for the work Lynch put into the production process.

It seems as if Marshawn Lynch and video game news are inseparable as of late, for just recently, the five time Pro Bowl player made an appearance during Conan O’Brien’s Clueless Gamer segment for DOOM with Josh Norman and Von Miller that aired prior to the Panthers’ and Broncos’ championship match-up. As it happens, Lynch has been apart of the talk show host’s gaming piece in the past to promote Black Ops 3 , so maybe he’ll become a recurring guest on the late night program with his retirement giving him some free time.

Speaking of which, considering Lynch’s performance in Black Ops 3 was brief, perhaps Beast Mode will take part in future Call of Duty projects and further his career with acting in video games. Who knows? Stranger things have certainly happened.

New No Man’s Sky Demo Reveals New Gameplay Details

New No Man’s Sky Demo Reveals New Gameplay Details

886
In a new 21 minute demo, Hello Games managing director Sean Murray demonstrates some gameplay for the studio’s upcoming universe-exploration title, No Man’s Sky.

Gamers don’t have long to wait before No Man’s Sky ‘s June launch, and despite the approaching release date, fans still don’t have much of an idea on what the game entails. But thanks to a new gameplay demo, some light has been shed on what players can get up to in

The new 21-minute demo was unveiled on IGNby No Man’s Sky co-director Sean Murray, who played through a section of the game and provided some useful commentary on some of the single-playergameplay details gamers can expect. Playing like a colorful first-person shooter, every player will begin No Man’s Sky on a completely random planet, ensuring that each gamer will have a unique experience.

Murray states that one of the main aims of the game involves gathering resources and combining them to build technology. Each resource was developed based on a faux periodic table, and players can expect different planets to have different resources. With gamers needing a few billion years to explore every planetin No Man’s Sky, expect to find a wide range of resources throughout the game’s universe. Interestingly, the game contains no mini-map, which Murray states is a design choice due to No Man’s Sky ‘s focus on having players explore never-before-seen planets on their own.

In addition to resource gathering, one of the other main aims of No Man’s Sky is survival, which is an area where the aforementioned resource gathering mechanic can be used. In order to survive dangerous wildlife and/or hazardous planets, players can build protective gear and weapons using whatever resources they may have. In addition to building gear, No Man’s Sky features an intriguing destructive environment mechanic, and many planets will feature enormous cave networks just waiting to be uncovered.

Having previous stated that No Man’s Sky will feature alien languages, Murray revealed that alien languages and the game’s lore can be learned through left over alien relics. While players will have the option of antagonizing NPC’s, learning new alien languages is important if players want to sell or trade useful items and resourceswith alien NPC’s. Murray also showed off some of the buildings which players can come across, and should gamers be killed by a planet’s wildlife or angry robotic sentinels, these buildings will serve as a respawn point.

And finally, Murray demonstrated No Man’s Sky ‘s space exploration mechanic, in which gamers can leave a planet by a spaceship and go exploring in outer space. Not only can players spend lifetimes exploring the game’s many planets, but countless hours can also be spent in space just interacting with traders, minable asteroids, and space stations. Should gamers get bored flying around in space, it is possible to attack other ships and get a wanted level, though players should definitely expect some heavy resistance.

While a number of new details have been unveiled in the 21-minute demo – which can be viewed above – No Man’s Sky ‘s story remains a mystery. But based on what we’ve seen so far from the demo, No Man’s Sky is still easily one of 2016’s most anticipated games, and we’re hoping that when the story is finally revealed, it will be comparable to No Man’s Sky ‘s impeccable gameplay.

No Man’s Sky is scheduled for launch on June 21, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PC.

Black Ops 3 DLC Trailer Brings Back ‘The Replacer’

Black Ops 3 DLC Trailer Brings Back ‘The Replacer’

53
Activision revives one of its previous ad campaigns for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 , by bringing back “The Replacer” in a new trailer for the shooter’s Awakening DLC.

With Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ‘s release datefor its Awakening DLC arriving in less than a week, in order to excite its fans, Activision has released a new live-action trailer with renowned Hollywood character actor Peter Stormare returning as “The Replacer”. Die-hard players of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ought to recognize the ad campaign, and of course, should gamers need the characters’ services, he’ll step in to cover for any real-life situation that needs attention, so that folks can spend more time playing the futuristic shooter.

For the uninitiated, Black Ops 2 introduced The Replacer in a trailerfor its DLC package known as Revolution a few years ago, and the character became somewhat of a fan-favorite, particularly due to his brash antics and uncaring attitude. For instance, the most recent iteration of The Replacer has him haphazardly filling in for an ambulance driver, flirting with a girlfriend’s mom, and relieving himself on a neighbor’s lawn as he takes over someone’s dog-walking duties.

As some may be aware, the Call of Duty franchise is far from the first instance of Peter Stormare attaching himself to a gaming series, be it through promotional materials, or with him actually showing up as a character in a release. As it happens, the actor played Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 ‘s Soviet Union scientist Dr. Gregor Zelinsky, he provided the voice of Jorunn the Skald-King in The Elder Scrolls Online , and most recently, he showed up as Dr. Alan Hill in the cult horror hit Until Dawn . Nevertheless, fans can check out his reprisal role of The Replacer for Black Ops 3 in the trailer below.

Not only does the video above show The Replacer running rampant, but it also teases the materials of Black Ops 3 ‘s Awakening DLCwith some colorful and fast-paced gameplay footage. As previously reported, fans who pick up the expansion will be getting four new multiplayer maps known as Skyjacked, Rise, Splash and Gauntlet, as well as a brand new Zombies map called Der Eisendrache.

Due to the fact that Activision has been publicizing Black Ops 3 ‘s Awakening DLC almost non-stop, it’s obvious that the game’s advertising budget it astronomical, especially considering the solid production value of the trailer with Stormare. Bearing that in mind, the publisher and developer Treyarch are clearly banking on the expansion being a financial success. Of course, should it not perform as well as the companies hope, there are three more add-on packages planned for the game this year to help pick up the slack.

Regardless, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 being a veritable blockbuster — it was 2015’s best-selling game, after all — the chance of the Awakening DLC flopping is slim to none. However, Activision and Treyarch raking in buku bucks from the release doesn’t necessarily mean that the franchise’s formula hasn’t become stale. Some would even argue that Black Ops 3 ‘s problems made it a disappointment, showing that the series may be out of fresh ideas.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is out now and is available for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Why I’m Excited for No Man’s Sky

Why I’m Excited for No Man’s Sky

1,212
With Hello Games’ space exploration title No Man’s Sky finally given a release date of June 21, one Game Rant writer explains why they are looking forward to the game.

It’s been a long time coming, but there have finally been some finite details revealed about the launch of No Man’s Sky . For one thing, the procedurally-generated, space travel-themed title from developer Hello Games has been given a release date, with the game set to launch on June 21in North America, and June 24 in Europe. It’s a relief for those patiently awaiting the release of the game, as they now have a date to put in their calendars.

When No Man’s Sky first appeared at VGX 2013, it immediately caught the attention of the gaming community. In spite of a huge number of projects on the cards from established developers, it was this title from a relatively unknown studio that really stayed in focus for a number of gamers. Hello Games had a wonderful concept, and it was this central idea of seemingly limitless space exploration that madea game to look out for.

All this led to No Man’s Sky taking a place at the top table of PS4 games. In spite of Hello Games’ fledgling place in the highest echelons of game development, the project was being watched very closely, with every delayto the title being scrutinized. When all was said and done, No Man’s Sky ended up as one of the most anticipated games of 2016.

No Man's Sky Red Space

No Man's Sky Red Space

Some have remained sceptical over the game’s potential quality, explaining that there has still been very little on show regarding exactly how the game will function. However, there’s one very simple reason that No Man’s Sky has remained so highly thought of, and that’s down to the title’s sheer ambition. This single ideal is so many have faith that Hello Gameswill follow through on the game’s initial promise.

Somewhere, there is the genuine belief that No Man’s Sky is going to deliver something wonderfully unique to the world of video games. The direction Hello Games has taken with the project is refreshing, and in the end it all comes down to a simple change of scope in comparison to most science fiction games. At the moment, No Man’s Sky’s focus on discovery is a different set up to the vast majority of sci-fi games on the market.

No Man's Sky Ship

No Man's Sky Ship

One of the biggest frustrations of science fiction gaming is the lack of freedom and exploration given, even within games with scopes galaxies wide. Although the player is often given settings that span millions of miles, the user is rarely given even a fraction of the potential worlds to actually explore, instead being given a pre-defined path to follow. Space-faring games should offer movement on the X, Y, and Z axis, but all too often sci-fi games feel overwhelmingly two dimensional.

Even some of the best science fiction games available fall into restrictive patterns of play or exploration. Thetrilogy delivered possibly the best space opera written specifically for gaming, yet beyond the first game direct exploration of planets was not possible, and the series’ predecessor Knights of the Old Republic had similar issues. Meanwhile, FTL: Faster Than Light may emulate the feeling of Star Trek -esque space battles better than most games on the market, but does not bring any of the iconic show’s mission statement to the table.

It’s only recently that games have been able to scratch the surface of what true space exploration in gaming could entail. Both EVE Online andoffer up expansive in-game universes, but there is still a sense of detachment from a real sense of exploration. However, it seems as though No Man’s Sky is set to tap in to this feeling of adventure in a fantastic way.

No Man's Sky Dinosaur

No Man's Sky Dinosaur

At its core, No Man’s Sky seems to be a very different beast from many of its counterparts, with an overwhelming focus on life amongst a universe that will take players 5 billion years to explore. Whilst most video game universes feel cold and devoid of other living things, Hello Games is building a game that is overflowing with strange creatures to discover. In fact, the search for new alien life appears to be one of the main modes of play.

No Man’s Sky is going to include an “intergalactic Pokedex”that keeps track of the different flora and fauna that the player has discovered throughout their journey. What this means regarding the overall gameplay remains to be seen, but gameplay demos of the title show that not only is life hugely important, but that the player’s interactions with other life forms will affect their standing the universe itself.

For starters, attacking creatures found on planets can attract the attention of Sentinels, a race of self-replicating robots who will take on the player if it deems them to be a threat. However, it also seems as though other kinds of less violent interaction will also be available. Players can learn alien languagesby traveling the galaxy, and therefore then communicate with the variety of races they discover on their travels.

No Man's Sky Sentinel Drone

No Man's Sky Sentinel Drone

This leads to other positives for the player, too. Hello Games has confirmed that No Man’s Sky will have an economy and trading systemof its own, and as the player learns more foreign dialects, they will be able to make use of this to improve their overall ability in the game itself. It’s these kind of design choices that are exciting, and the potential for these to be implemented well help separate No Man’s Sky from the army of other adventure and survival titles that have hit the market over recent years.

Therefore, there are signs that the small development team at Hello Games will deliver a vital level of polish for No Man’s Sky . Both in terms of theme and graphical style, the title seems to be aiming to deliver something fresh. Even in terms of sound design, Hello Games seems to have made a pitch-perfect choice, with electronic post-rock band 65daysofstatic recording the game’s soundtrack, fresh from a hugely successful re-scoring of underrated 70s sci-fi movie Silent Running .

That’s not to say that No Man’s Sky is immediately deserving of an army of fans willing to fork over $150 for the game’s collector’s edition, however. In fact, it’s far removed from that point, particularly due to some justifiable concerns that not quite enough has been seen of how the game will function. It’s certainly worth holding fire on any pre-orders until Hello Games has granted the gaming community more details on gameplay and focus.

Even so, No Man’s Sky is an extremely exciting project. When the game was revealed, there was a sense that the title may just deliver on the dreams of what the future of video games might hold. Although there’s every chance that the game may fall short of this lofty ideal, it’s still incredibly hard not to get a feeling of excitement about just what it may bring to the world of gaming.

No Man’s Sky will be released for PC and PS4 on June 21, 2016.

Black Ops 3 Begins Its Double XP Weekend Today

Black Ops 3 Begins Its Double XP Weekend Today

73
Developer Treyarch announces the beginning of a Double XP weekend event for its shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 , which starts today for players everywhere.

Starting today at 10:00 AM PST / 1:00 PM EST, Treyarch is rewarding Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ‘s multiplayer and zombies players with twice the amount of normal experience points by beginning a Double XP event that’s set to last throughout the weekend. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 developer made the announcement via its Twitter account, while also confirming that fans should expect the additional XP to end on Monday, February 1, at the exact same time mentioned above.

The Double XP event is starting just a few days before the release dateof the first-person shooter’s first expansion pack known as Awakening, which will arrive on PlayStation platforms before any others due to Activision’s and Sony’s timed-exclusive DLC deal. As previously reported, February 2’s add-ons will include four new multiplayer maps (Skyjacked, Rise, Splash, and Gauntlet), as well as a fresh scenario for the game’s popular Zombies mode called Der Eisendrache.

As is to be expected, Treyarch’s tweet below urges fans to clear their schedules to take part in the Double XP event. In fact, the studio proclaims the need for players to make sure and order a Replacer, as seen in a recent Awakening DLC trailer. Of course, should folks take that route, they’ll need to already have little to no regard for their friends, family, or responsibilities.

Get your Replacer lined up...you're going to need it. Tomorrow at 10am/PST we'll activate 2XP for MP/Z (runs through Monday 10am/PST).

— Treyarch Studios (@Treyarch) January 28, 2016

Treyarch’s decision to enact double the amount of XP in Black Ops 3 this weekend is not only a great way for the developer to get fans to engage with the base game’s multiplayer and zombies materials, but it’s also a solid promotional tool to incentivize players to buy the Awakening DLC upon its release. Undoubtedly, there will be plenty of people who take part in the event — especially considering the FPS was 2015’s best-selling game— so it serves as a proficient prompt to remind fans of the forthcoming expansion pack.

At any rate, the Awakening DLC for Black Ops 3 is sure to give those who enjoy the game’s multiplayer and zombies mode an enjoyable experience. Whilst we’re still not entirely sure what players will be doing in No Man’s Sky , according to a post on the PlayStation blog, Hello Games’ latest project will see players learning alien languages in order to interact with other races on one of the over 18 quintillion unique worlds that they can explore in the game.

Creator Sean Murray from Hello Games stated that the team has always wanted to incorporate foreign factions into the game and are finally at a point where they’re happy enough to show it. As players travel‘s vast universe, they may encounter individuals from other distinct races whose appearances and speech patterns are procedurally generated based on a set of variables defined by the game’s developers.

Once the player has encountered the new species, they will be able to trade resourceswith them, as well as learn more about the game’s lore. You may even be able to forge alliances for assistance if you wish, though none of this is as simple as one might think. According to Murray:

“With NPCs in No Man’s Sky, you actually have to learn their language; they speak to you in their native tongue. The more you travel around the universe, the more you learn their language, and the more you can communicate with them.”

Whilst players may struggle to pick up the dialects at first, as they explore further into the universe, fill your “ Intergalactic Pokedex“, and talk to new NPCs, you’ll gradually get a deeper understanding of how the language works. According to Murray, there is real value in developing a relationship with a new race and learning to speak their language may allow you to receive preferential treatment such as cheaper prices or better equipment. On the other hand, if you blunder into conversations without any knowledge of the race’s language, there can be real negative consequences. Selecting the wrong option in the dialogue tree could lead to your standing decreasing, the trader ripping you off, or your new-found alien friend attacking you.

Each species will have a particular aspect of the game that they focus on. Some races may be more into exploration and science than military, meaning that allying yourself with them may lead to you gaining new technology to aid your exploration. Or you might prefer befriending a race of warmongers if you’re looking to be more military focussed yourself. Every individual race will have a unique language for the player to learn and Murray predicts that each dialect would take “hours and hours” to learn, with the majority of people never becoming fluent unless that’s something they’re particularly seeking.

But whilst the languages are there for players to use, Hello Games stresses that the interactions with NPCs are just a tiny part of the game, so don’t be expecting the universe to fill up with dialogue trees.

“It’s more about creating a really interesting reason for people to explore the game and get some really emergent results.”

Now that No Man’s Sky finally has a release date, players don’t have long to wait until they can finally begin their adventures exploring the universe. With just a few months remaining until the game’s release, it’s likely that developers Hello Games will soon begin to release new information about their upcoming title so stay tuned for more news as it’s unveiled. For now, it’s already easy to see why so many are putting the game in their lists as one of the most anticipated games of 2016.

No Man’s Sky is set for release on 24th June for PlayStation 4 and PC. Xbox have also expressed an interestin the title.

After months of furious debate, No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games clears the air on the highly anticipated game’s release date, VR-support stance, and whether the game will hit retail shelves.

While Spike’s final video game awards show featured plenty of reveals (including the world’s first look at), it was Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky that really got people talking. With its bright, lush visuals and promises of a massive galaxy to explore, gamer’s tongues were practically wagging at the potential that the game presented. As debate raged on whether the game was an MMO ( it isn’t) or if the game will appear on Xbox One ( probably not), fans held their breathe in anticipation for the little indie game that could. While Hello Games has primarily remained mum on the highly anticipated title, studio head Sean Murray has finally cleared the air on an official release date, along with announcing a retail release for the game, all while discussing possible virtual reality elements for the title.

Hello Games had previously teased thatwould release in June of 2016, but the studio opted to not give an official release date at the time. But speaking at a Hello Games and Sony event, the studio revealed that No Man’s Sky will launch in North America on PC and PlayStation 4 simultaneously on June 21st. Eager European gamers will have to wait a couple days more, as the UK launch date will be June 24th.

No Man's Sky Physical Release

Speculation has raged on whether the Sony-supported game would remain exclusively digital, and Sony has finally put the debate to rest by announcing that No Man’s Sky will also be receiving a full-fledged retail release, released on the same day as the digital version of the game. In a post to the official PlayStation Blog, Murray seemed downright giddy over the physical edition, stating:

“Sony has a history of working closely with indies, and this feels like some sort of culmination of that story. It means more people have a chance to join us in exploring the universe than ever before. I can’t really imagine what it will feel like to walk into a shop and see our game on a shelf.”

Clearly feeling chatty about the impending release of the game, Murray let it slip in a chat with GameSpot that Hello Games saw No Man’s Sky as the “perfect fit” for the upcoming PlayStation VR. While Murray was quick to sing the praises of virtual reality, comparing the idea of playing No Man’s Sky in VR as “asking me when I was five what the future would look like,” he was also quick to swat down an official announcement on No Man’s Sky VR integration, telling the GameSpot interviewer “that’s as far as I can comment.”

While the wait for No Man’s Sky has been torture for dedicated fans, it’s clear that Hello Games and Sony are ramping up for a big release for the title. It remains to be seen if the decision to release No Man’s Sky physically will ultimately affect the price, possibly pushing it into the dreaded $60 range, but the gaming world is that much closer to finally getting to explore the vast universe of No Man’s Sky.

No Man’s Sky Gets $150 Explorer’s Edition

No Man’s Sky Gets $150 Explorer’s Edition

Indie development studio Hello Games announces that its forthcoming adventure title, No Man’s Sky , has a $150 Explorer’s Edition set for its PC version.

Now that the eagerly anticipated No Man’s Sky finally has a release date, developer Hello Games has decided its ambitious space exploration and survival title deserves a high-priced special version, and the company is partnering with online retailer iam8bit to distribute them. Dubbed the Explorer’s Edition and only available for the PC port, thepackage will be available as a limited edition run of 10,000 units in both North America and Europe upon launch, and is available for pre-order right now for $150.

Those who put their money down for No Man’s Sky ‘s Explorer’s Edition will not only receive a digital download of the game for Steam or GOG, but they will also get a cast metal ship replica, which is hand-painted, and comes with an assortment of different decals for customization. Plus, the package includes a hard-enamel pin, a backdrop with a diorama for the ship’s display, as well as a “mystery item” with a $10 value that will be revealed once the game officially becomes available.

Although some might balk at the price tag, iam8bit points out the individual components of the No Man’s Sky Explorer’s Edition total up to be $210 as separate entities, so there are some savings to be had in purchasing the bundle. Plus, fans should definitely take note that Hello Games’ $150 offering is far from being listed among the most expensive video game special editions, so when compared to something like Saints Row 4 ‘s Million Dollar Edition, the No Man’s Sky ‘s collector bundle is chump change.

Considering the numerous delays No Man’s Sky has encountered since its reveal at the Spike VGXa couple of years ago, though, it begs the question whether or not the game is still registering clearly enough on fans’ radars to warrant them dishing out such a large portion of dough for the Explorer’s Edition rather than simply opting for the base model. Of course, many gamers consider No Man’s Sky to be one of the most anticipated video games of 2016, so the $150 package’s existence is somewhat justified, but typically, special bundles such as the Explorer’s Edition are offered for more established franchises with brand recognition.

Nevertheless, there will surely be plenty of fans who want to order No Man’s Sky ‘s Explorer’s Edition, for not only is it being touted as one of the most unique titles in years, but its game sizeis also leading people to wonder if it’s quite literally the biggest release ever made. At any rate, with a limited edition run of only 10,000 units, the Explorer’s Edition will probably sell out fast.

What do you think about Hello Games’ and iam8bit’s $150 Explorer’s Edition for No Man’s Sky? Do you believe all of the content in the package is worth the price, or will you be sticking with the standard version once it releases? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

No Man’s Sky is set to release in North America for PC and PlayStation 4 on June 21, 2016, with its availability for UK audiences being June 24, 2016.

No Man’s Sky Surprise Release Date Rumors Denied

No Man’s Sky Surprise Release Date Rumors Denied

180
Sean Murray, Hello Games founder and developer of No Man’s Sky , takes to Twitter to deny the rumors that the game is set to have a surprise release tomorrow.

No Man’s Sky may be the most anticipated indie game ever. This is no surprise, as it is a massive space exploration game that could take over 5 billion years to fully explore, making it one of the most ambitious gaming projects in history. The sheer scope of the game has seen it garner mainstream attention, with Hello Games founder Sean Murray recently showing the game off during an episode of.

Suffice to say, people are excited for, and can’t wait to play it. This unbridled enthusiasm for the game has resulted in a rumor being spread that the game is to have a surprise release tomorrow, October 27th, but Sean Murray has now confirmed the rumors to be untrue.

Sean Murray denied the rumor after being approached wby a fan on Twitter. Murray’s blunt statement can be found below:

. @dojo_ninjaI heard that rumour that NMS is stealth releasing on Oct 27th. It is false

— Sean Murray (@NoMansSky) October 25, 2015

Usually a rumor like this would not be given much attention, but a few factors made this rumor particularly believable. Firstly, tomorrow is when Sony is showcasing their Paris Games Week press conference, after having skipped Gamescom 2015to do so. No Man’s Sky is one of PS4’s biggest console-exclusive gameson the horizon, and a surprise release during the Paris Games Week conference would generate a significant amount of buzz for the PS4.

Tomorrow also happens to be the launch of Microsoft’s major fall Xbox One exclusive, Halo 5: Guardians , so what better way to siphon off some attention than by suddenly dropping No Man’s Sky on the PlayStation Store? Of course, it would make more sense for Sony to announce the release date of No Man’s Sky in advance if they truly wanted to compete with Halo 5 , but even a surprise release of the game could turn gamers’ attention away from Master Chief’s latest adventure.

Furthermore, Sony actually has precedence with surprise game releases during press conferences. At E3 2014, they released a small game called Entwined during the conference, and then later that same year, the Silent Hills teaser P.T. was released on the PS Store without warning. That being said, No Man’s Sky is a bigger project than P.T. and Entwined , with a lot more hype surrounding it, and so if Sony does have a surprise release tomorrow, it will probably be something else entirely.

No Man’s Sky is coming to PC and PS4 at an undetermined point in the future.
