hype train is at full speed this week, as Treyarch Studios looks to both retain the franchise’s massive player base and attract some fresh blood as well. The beta officially kicked off this week with PS4 users getting the earliest crack at access, a byproduct of the DLC exclusivity partnershipActivision has with Sony. While those who bought the game ahead of time have been enjoying the historic first Call of Duty beta, gamers hesitant to pull the trigger until they’ve seen more gameplay footage have been left on the sidelines.
Treyarch is a studio that’s preached fan input as a huge influence on how they approach their games, and the fact some PS4 users were being excluded probably didn’t sit well with the developers. That’s why Treyarch took to social media to announce the biggest development in the Black Ops 3 beta yet.
Treyarch just announced on Twitter thatis now available to every PS4 player in all of its beta-testing glory. The announcement comes just two days after the Black Ops 3 beta opened up to PS4 gamers who had preordered the game, and, if the rest of Treyarch’s beta schedule remains unchanged, that leaves Sony players until August 23 to get their hands on some early Call of Duty action. That’s still a full week of hands-on time before players on other platforms get a chance, and Treyarch has been quick to remind gamers that this is their chance to test the game and provide feedback on gameplay before its full launch in November.
The Black Ops 3 beta has been well-received so far, despite players initially balking at the 15 GB downloadrequired to actually participate. Although no progress made in the beta will transfer over into the final game, that hasn’t stopped Treyarch from offering up some experience-based incentive: senior design director David Vonderhaar revealed earlier today that the level cap was being raisedfrom 28 to 34. On top of this, the Black Ops 3 beta will also give gamers a shot at the Uplink modeof gameplay, a popular multiplayer mode that made its debut in last year’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare .
Multiplayer is the focus of the Call of Duty series, and Black Ops 3 is no exception, despite the new approach to its campaign mode. It does seem odd, however, that Treyarch would offer the beta to everyone with a PS4 when they had initially made it clear only those who pre-ordered the game would have access. While reaction to the news has ranged happiness about having a chance to play to anger after one of the biggest incentives in pre-ordering was just rendered moot, it’s important to realize that Treyarch has already said feedback is the priority with this beta. Opening it up to all PS4 users means getting that much more fan insight, and the fact Treyarch considers their fan’s opinions so valuable should be a positive takeaway from today’s news.
Did you preorder just for the beta? Do you think Treyarch’s decision to include all PS4 users in this weekend’s beta is fair? Sound off in the comments.
