With only a few months left before the release of the much-hyped Mortal Kombat X , we’re seeing an influx of new information about the latest installment of the fan favorite fighting series — including the final details of that all-important roster.

about the latest installment of the fan favorite fighting series — including the final details of that all-important roster. Now, it seems that there might be a couple of character announcements set for later this week.

Series co-creator Ed Boon has once again taken to Twitter to tease fans of an upcoming announcement. Over the past several months we’ve seen Boon use the social media site to hint at the first reveal of the game, as well as give some footwear-based clues as to who else we can expect to see engaging in Kombatin the new title.

Boon first tweetedan announcement of a NetherRealm Studios livestream set for Thursday January 29, which is set to feature an ‘in depth’ gameplay demonstration and a new character reveal. He then followed up with another tweetthat suggests that two characters will be revealed before the week is out.

However, he wasn’t quite done prompting speculation from the Mortal Kombat faithful just there. Boon would go on to retweeta presumably fan-made image that suggests Marcus Fenix of the Gears of War series and Sweet Tooth from the Twisted Metal games would be joining the fray as console-exclusive characters for Xbox and PlayStation consoles respectively.

Fenix is a character Gears of War creator Cliffy B tried to get into the MK seriesyears ago so we can only hope that comes to pass. It’s not uncommon to see game developers use coded messages on social media to hype up a game ahead of its release — but this sort of teasing should perhaps be taken with a pinch of salt. An idle retweet costs nothing, but the added attention that a hint like this can provide can prove to be very useful in the run-up to a big release like Mortal Kombat X .

That being said, it wouldn’t be the first time a major fighting game has attempted such a strategy. The excellent Soul Calibur II offered players the choice of Spawn on the Xbox, Tekken star Heihachi Mishima on the PlayStation 2 and Link from The Legend of Zelda on the GameCube, in a promotional move that’s remembered fondly to this day. Will we see similar from Mortal Kombat X ? Perhaps we’ll find out this Thursday.

Mortal Kombat X is set to release on April 14, 2015 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PC.
