A ‘credible source’ tells website The Tech Game that this year’s Call of Duty will include backward compatible Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox One.
Ever since Microsoft announced that the Xbox One will be backward compatible with Xbox 360 games, various companies have utilized the feature to sweeten the pre-order bonus pot for new Xbox One titles. And if a new rumor is to be believed, it appears as though Activision is going a similar route with this year’s Call of Duty entry by including previous games in the series as a pre-order bonus on Xbox One.
The rumor comes from website The Tech Game, which sites a “credible source.” According to the source, this year’sgame will feature Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as pre-order bonuses thanks to Xbox One’s backward compatibility with the Xbox 360.
It’s worth noting that Activision has not been an active partner with Microsoft when it comes to backward compatibility so far. In fact, Activision was left off the list of publisherssaid to be cooperating with Microsoft on bringing last-gen titles to the Xbox One. Furthermore, despite the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is one of the most-requested BC games, the title still has yet to be made available on the service.
Bringing two of the Xbox 360’s most popular shooters (not to mention two of the most critically-acclaimed games of the previous generation) to the Xbox One would be one of the most significant uses of Xbox One backward compatibility yet. It could even be enough to convince those holding out on buying an Xbox One to finally take the plunge, especially when it comes to those that are nostalgic about these games.
Of course, until Activision or Microsoft makes an official announcement, this information should be taken with a grain of salt. There have been plenty of rumors about Infinity Ward’s new Call of Duty game, including that it might not be a sequel to Call of Duty: Ghosts , but again, until official word comes, none of the rumors can be substantiated.
Having said that, one could see how it could be a smart idea to bring Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2 to the Xbox One backward compatibility list, especially as a tactic to boost the sales of the new Call of Duty on the system. However, with Activision’s recent Call of Duty DLC timed-exclusivity partnership with Sony, it seems odd that the company would turn around and do this for Xbox One. In any case, we’ll likely have to wait until E3 to find out if these rumors are true, so stay tuned.
This year’s Call of Duty is expected to release later this year for unspecified platforms.
