Publisher Bandai Namco and the tabletop company Steamforged Games announce a collaboration to create a board game version of From Software’s Dark Souls .
According to a March press release from the folks over at Steamforged Games, Dark Souls will be getting its own board game soon enough, with Bandai Namco licensing the title, and with both of the companies starting a Kickstarterfor the project later this month. Of course, since the tabletop adaptation of the popular action-RPG series is still in its nascent stages, neither Steamforged nor Bandai Namco offered any additional details involving its development.
Should anyone be able to raise enough capital to craft an officialboard game, Steamforged appears to be the team to do so, as the studio’s previous tabletop release — a medieval football game known as Guild Ball — went on to raise £93,691 on Kickstarter two years ago. Naturally, the creators have expressed excitement at being given a chance to port such a revered video game franchise to the board game medium, as a segment of Steamforged’s announcement reads:
“As Dark Souls fans, we could not be more excited to be given the honour of developing a board game that embraces everything that makes Dark Souls the deep, compelling game experience that it is.”
This won’t be the first time that a From Software property gets the tabletop treatment. As it happens, just last month, game designer Eric Lang — creator ofand A Game of Thrones: The Card Game , among many other licensed projects — revealed that he would be putting together an official Bloodborne card game.
Considering the fact that Dark Souls 3 will be getting its worldwide release next week, and that the property will be receiving its own clothing line, it seems like Bandai Namco is looking to provide fans of the franchise with as many outlets to praise the series as possible by also throwing a tabletop version into the mix. Honestly, on the surface it seems like a cash grab project, but with board games being such a niche market, the end result will likely be a labor of love that many fans will enjoy. Plus, since Dark Souls has the qualities of a much more morbid and difficult Dungeons & Dragons , it’s surprising that it’s already taken this long for the series to get its own tabletop edition.
