Like clockwork, a new Call of Duty game releases every year in early November.

Even though there are still two expansion packs set to release for the latest entry in the series, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare , Activision has already started hyping the next game in the franchise. Using a cryptic campaign on Snapchat, Activision officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 , which is being developed by Treyarch.
In the official press release, Activision states that, “ Black Ops 3 is the first title for next-gen hardware in the critically acclaimed Black Ops series.” This seems to suggest that this is the first time that the series will not be making an appearance on PS3 or Xbox 360 since Call of Duty 2 in 2005. Considering that we’re now nearly two years into the lifespans of the PS4 and Xbox One, seeing developers drop support of the old systems is going to be much more common until they are eventually phased out completely.
But what exactly constitutes a “next-gen system”? The language is a little confusing, but Activision seems to be referring to the eighth generation of video game hardware. However, there are many people that only consider PS4 and Xbox One as eighth gen systems, but this is not the case. Nintendo’s Wii U actually kicked off the eighth generation of home video game consoles in 2012, so the language of the press release does not necessarily rule the system out. Ultimately, there’s evidence both in favor of Black Ops 3 coming to the console as well as in favor of Black Ops 3 not coming to the Wii U.
For one, Wii U has already been home to two Call of Duty games in the past. The system launched with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 , and it also received Call of Duty: Ghosts the following year. Unfortunately for Wii U fans, Advanced Warfare skipped the system entirely, so it is also possible that Black Ops 3 will not see the light of day on the system either.
The biggest piece of evidence in support of Black Ops 3 coming to Wii U, however, comes in the form of an update Activision has made to the official Call of Duty website. Previously, users had been able to link their Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam accounts to the site, but Activision has now made it possible to link Nintendo ID accounts as well, with no explanation given.
In any case, there’s no concrete answer either way as to whether or not Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is coming to the Wii U. However, it seems strange that Activision would add Nintendo ID support to the official Call of Duty website for no reason. The online communities for both Black Ops 2 and Ghosts on the Wii U are not very heavily populated, as most dedicated Call of Duty fans tend to play the games on Xbox or PlayStation systems, so it is unlikely that Activision did this in order to facilitate gamers playing the Wii U versions of those games.
The only systems so far definitively confirmed to be receiving Black Ops 3 are PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but what about Wii U? Time will tell, but there is certainly more reason to think Wii U will get the game now with the new ability to link Nintendo ID accounts to the Call of Duty website.
Whatever systems the game is available on, fans of the series will be able to look forward to a campaign, the franchise’s trademark multiplayer experience, and the ever-popular Zombies mode. All of this has been confirmed by Activision, who also released a teaser trailer for Black Ops 3 .
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 currently has no release date, but a full reveal of the game will take place on Sunday, April 26th.
