The juggernaut that is Call of Duty is back once again this year with Treyarch at the helm for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 .
. While the popular shooter looks to retain the fast and competitive gameplay fans have come to expect from the franchise, a new partnership between Sony and Activisionmixes the formula up a bit by bringing timed exclusivity deals to the PlayStation platforms.
The first sign of this new partnership comes with the recently releasedbeta, which kicked off on PlayStation 4 this week and runs until August 23 where it will then open up to other platforms. While the beta continues to rage online, Treyarch isn’t content to simply sit back and compile data, as the developer is adding more goodies into the mix for players to enjoy including a fan favorite mode from a past game in the series.
In a post on Twitter, Treyarch’s senior design director, David Vonderhaar, revealed that the beta will be expanding with even more content today. In the update, the level cap is rising to level 34, which gives players six more levels to achieve. A new map known as Stronghold is also being added, which was previously shown off at GamesCom a few weeks ago. The map takes players to a snowy mountain side with a number of buildings and structures placed around the level.
Advanced Warfare players will also be thrilled to see that Uplink, a fan favorite mode from last year’s Call of Duty entry, is getting added into the mix as well. For those unaware, Uplink is a multiplayer mode that pits two teams against each other in a fight for control of a satellite drone. The team that captures the drone then has to run it into the enemy base to score points by either throwing it into the uplink station or by physically entering the “goal.”
Approximately 10:00am PST on Friday. Raise the level cap. Likely level 34. Stronghold. Uplink. RT to save my Twitter timeline and my life.— David Vonderhaar (@DavidVonderhaar) August 21, 2015
Even with the beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 in full swing and the series’ enormous popularity, only 10% of the current playerbase has reached the max rank of 28. Those numbers also come via Vonderhaar, as of 10 PM PDT on August 20. With additional ranks being added and the promise of new content, players will have a lot more to look forward to up until the beta ends on August 30.
With Black Ops 3 , Treyarch is also looking to mix up the more traditional elements that fans have grown accustomed to in the series. The biggest change coming in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 may be the fact that campaign missions are now wide open, allowing players to tackle and complete objectives from many different angles. In fact, the follow icon, a series mainstay, has been completely omitted from the campaign in an effort to promote replayability and working cooperatively with friends.
