Smart phone buyers were evidently excited for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and based on the devices’ current sales performances, Apple is sure to be quite pleased with themselves.
is sure to be quite pleased with themselves. The tech company announced today that first weekend sales – from its launch last Friday to Sunday – for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plushave topped 10 million units, setting a new sales record for iPhones.
Currently, the pair of phones have seen launches in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK, and will release in 20 additional countries come September 26, 2014. Similar to the 4 million iPhone 6 pre-ordersfrom last week, it’s unknown which variation of the new iPhone 6 is selling the most.
According tohowever, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may be the lead phone, judging by its shipping wait times being a bit longer than the standard sized iPhone 6. On Apple’s online storespecifically, the iPhone 6 Plus will ship within three to four weeks where the smaller iPhone 6 ships within seven to ten days. Based on this, it appears as though consumers are eager, or at least very much interested, in larger-screened iPhones. In the past, Apple was criticized for not offering a larger model in the same way its competitors have.
In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook had the following to say about the sales numbers:
“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier. We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”
Last year, when Apple debuted the iPhone 5s and the colorful iPhone 5c line, the two phones sold a combined amount of 9 million, becoming the company’s best iPhone launch at the time. In the wake of the iPhone 6 reveal, both of the older phones have received price drops, with the 8GB iPhone 5c now free with a 2-year commitment, though some still expect Apple to eventually discontinue the more ‘mainstream’ phone.
In just three days, the newer Apple iPhone models have already surpassed their predecessors, despite the fact that they haven’t finished launching worldwide. Apple intends to bring the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to over 100 more countries before the end of 2014, as part of the company’s plans for its fastest iPhone launch to date. The iPhone 6 may not be a revolutionary device, but Apple is at least answering demand with the larger models.
It’ll be interesting to see how game and app development is impacted by the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. With games, specifically, a common complaint has been the virtual buttons/joysticks and how close they are to one another. With a larger screen however, perhaps that problem is closer to being solved.
