Yesterday, Rocksteady Studios released a new trailer for the much-anticipated Batman: Arkham Knight , offering a new look at the culmination of their highly-acclaimed superhero trilogy .

. However, there may be more to the trailer than first impressions would suggest, as some eagle-eyed fans have spotted a few secret codes hidden away amongst the footage.

Three suspicious alphanumeric strings were detected in the trailer, each rather difficult to spot. Speculation began to circulate that these codes should be used on a password-protected section of the official Arkham Knight website, but early attempts to do so proved fruitless — it seemed there was another step to solve this puzzle.

Entering any old word into the password field was met with the message “Incorrect password. Please locate cipher.” , but using one of the strings from the video prompted the instruction to “ decode cipher instructions “. With that in mind, puzzle-minded users on Redditset about finding a way to decipher the passwords needed to gain entry.

A user by the name of SixSided managed to determine that each string only used letters from the character’s name, and inferred that the combination of upper and lower case letters must have been the key to figuring out the three individual ciphers. Unscrambled, the string became ‘HER FIRST LINE’, ‘ASYLUM SANCTUARY’ and ‘I WILL UNLEASH’.

Those phrases were callbacks to the first game in the series, Arkham Asylum . Each could be followed by another phrase which turned out to be the password needed to gain access to the site. The prize at the end of this lengthy procedure was character bios for Harley Quinn, Scarecrow and Poison Ivy.

While the payoff might seem a little light, this neat little puzzle was a great way of bring the Arkham fanbase together for a treasure hunt ahead of the game’s release. However, with previous controversy surrounding potential spoilers for the game being leaked thanks to promotional materials, it’s perhaps best that Rocksteadyare being coy with information.

That said, it’s possible that there might be more to this puzzle than it seems. With a few months left until the game’s release, we’ll perhaps see more character bios unveiled in a similar way — and the fact that Arkham Asylum is being referenced so heavily could suggest that the events of Arkham Knight are set to tie in to that game. Batman fans might just have some detective work to do of their own.
