‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ Twist Spoiled by Limited Edition Bonus?
The trend of major titles receiving a special ‘limited edition’ release is something that any video game fan will be quite familiar with at this point — but it’s much less common for the bonuses contained within these special releases to spoil the game’s plot. However, that would seem to be the case for Batman: Arkham Knight . Potential spoilers for the game, as well as prior entries in the series, follow.
In addition to an artbook and a tie-in comic, bat-fans who purchase the limited edition version of Arkham Knight will receive a sizable statue of Batman towering over Gotham City. An inscription on this statue reads ‘From a Grateful City In Memory of the Gotham Knight’, which would seem to be a pretty clear indication that the caped crusader will die over the course of the game.
Adding credence to this theory is the fact that the original image of the statue on the game’s Amazon listinghas since been edited so that the inscription merely reads ‘The Gotham Knight’. However, it might be that the statue itself is something of a red herring, as it wouldn’t be the first time that the Arkham series has referenced a major twist in its limited edition goodies.

A major plot reveal in Arkham Origins was the fact that the Joker had been operating as the Black Mask for much of the game — something that was reflected via swappable heads for the statue included in the game’s collector’s edition. A secret compartment contained the alternate head, packaged with a warning not to open it until the game was finished.
It seems strange to think that the Arkham Knight statue would contain such obvious spoilers, given the considerations made to ensure the prior game in the series wasn’t spoiled by its bonus materials. Any player opening the box for the Arkham Knight limited edition would surely read the inscription and find a spoiler — so are we being had?
It could well be that the game’s developers Rocksteady Studios know exactly what they’re doing; we’re being told that the ‘Gotham Knight’ is dead, but can it be taken at face value? With the Arkham Knight seemingly being a Batman imitator, perhaps there’s more going on here than meets the eye. We’ll have to wait until the game is out to know for sure what’s going on in Gotham. Arkham Knight is, after all, the conclusion of the Arkham seriesbut just like The Dark Knight Rises ended the Christopher Nolan Batman movie trilogy with the hero “dying,” we all know how that really ended…
