No doubt about it: Grand Theft Auto V is one of the biggest games of all time.

is one of the biggest games of all time. On its debut in fall 2013, Rockstar North’sopen-world criminal simulator nabbed seven world records, including the best-selling video game in its first 24 hours and the fastest video game to net $1 billion in revenue. Grand Theft Auto V moved over 15 million units in its first ten days, and went on to become the best-selling title of 2013, despite the fact that it was only available on last-generation consoles.

After delayed multiplayer contentand a well-publicized lawsuit filed by starlet Lindsay Lohan, Grand Theft Auto V is still going strong. Last fall, Rockstar released an updated versionof Grand Theft Auto V which brought the title to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and added a game-changing first-person mode. That was enough to push the game past Call of Duty: Black Ops on the United Kingdom’s sales charts, making it the best-selling game in the UK ever.

Now, Rockstar can put another feather in its cap: according to VGChartz, Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 40 million copies worldwide (the initial news release puts the number around 40.56 million units, although adding up the provided sales figures yields a total closer to 43.5 million). That’s a lot of Grand Theft Auto .

Most of those sales came from the initial, last-generation version of the game, with the PlayStation 3 edition leading the way at 19.24 million copies, and the Xbox 360 edition close behind at 17.79 million. The PlayStation 4 is clearly the dominant platform for the current-generation port, with 4.73 million units sold to the Xbox One’s 1.81.

Grand Theft Auto V Money

If those figures hold up, it’ll mean that Grand Theft Auto V is the second highest-selling console game of all time (cumulatively, Minecraft sold around 54 million units, but roughly a third of those sales came from the PC and Mac versions of the game). As a point of comparison, the original Super Mario Bros. only sold 40.24 million copies, and that was not only included with the original Nintendo Entertainment System, but is often considered the greatest game ever made.

The news gets better for Rockstar, too: the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V still hasn’t come out yet (hopefully, it’ll release later this month), while the imminent additionof long-awaited multiplayer heists will likely move more copies across all platforms.

Grand Theft Auto V shows no sign of slowing down; while the game probably won’t catch Wii Sports and its 82.54 million sales, all available evidence indicates that Rockstar will be riding the Grand Theft Auto gravy train for years to come.

For all of its mammoth success, the GTA series can’t lay claim to every video game accolade offered by Guinness. Even the mighty criminal sim franchise pales in comparison to some of these trendsetting titles: Best selling video game franchise of all time — the core Super Mario series is fast approaching 300 million unit sales, double GTA’s 140/150m (though the former franchise has 12 years on GTA ) Longest wait for a video game sequel — GTA 5 ‘s five year development may have rankled on some fans, but imagine waiting 22 years for record holder Legend of Kage ‘s 2008 return Longest serving video game voice actor — Ed Boon’s 22-year association with the Mortal Kombat franchise, both behind the scenes and on the mic (as vengeful ninja Scorpion) eclipses “Lazlow” Jones 12-year run on GTA Longest-running active video game series — GTA ‘s 16-year success story is less than half the length of Space Invaders remarkable 35-year career Largest playable area in an open-world title — Just Cause 2 ‘s Panau island stretches out to an astonishing 400 square miles, more than 8 times the size of GTA 5 ‘s more densely populated Los Santos.

Notch Explains Why He Sold Mojang to Microsoft

Notch Explains Why He Sold Mojang to Microsoft

126
You may have heard by now that Microsoft is buying Minecraft developer Mojang for a massive $2.5 billion.

for a massive $2.5 billion. Rumors of the deal began popping up last week, but Microsoft and Mojang officially announcedthe deal was going through today.

However, Mojang co-founder Markus ‘Notch’ Persson won’t be around after the sell, as he’s decided to leave the company behind along with two of other Mojang co-founders. Now, we have some insight as to why this all is going down.

In a post on his personal website, Notch explained his reasons for leaving were unrelated to the money, but more “about my sanity.” Notch wants to step out of the spotlight and go back to being a regular person.

“A relatively long time ago, I decided to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to take over leading it, and I wanted to try to do new things. At first, I failed by trying to make something big again, but since I decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I’ve had so much fun with work. I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed.

“I was at home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. I was confused. I didn’t understand. I tweeted thisin frustration. Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fishvideo on YouTube and started to realize I didn’t have the connection to my fans I thought I had. I’ve become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a CEO. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.”

It doesn’t seem like Notch’s departure will be temporary, either. While he still plans to work on smaller projects, he emphasizes that, should anything he work on become increasingly popular, he’ll “probably abandon it immediately.” Notch says he makes games because they’re fun, not because he’s set out to make the next big thing. And while there are sure to be numerous negative comments regarding his decision, he now feels less inclined to delve into them.

“I love you. All of you,” he said finishing up his post. “Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become…In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.”

Much to the surprise of very few, Minecraft is still as wildly popular as ever.

is still as wildly popular as ever. The now Microsoft-ownedsurvival/block-building simulator has been a tremendous success for several years now, and its latest arrival on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 is evidence that there are an ample number of future sales still to be made. While console and PC users alike have been enjoying the game for quite some time already, Windows phone users just recieved the game this past December.

The studio responsible for continuously building the Minecraft property, Mojang, has yet to confirm how many Windows Phone-related sales have contributed to the pool of existing Minecraft: Pocket Edition sales. That said, the developer did announce that the mobile version of the block-tastic builder has moved a whopping 30 million units thus far. At last count, this iteration of Minecraft had moved over 21 million intangible units as of April 2014, which means that it has roughly amassed a further 9 million sold in the months proceeding.

Announcing the sales milestone alongside the confirmation that players can now change their in-game names, shows that Mojang isn’t done supporting the title yet. Understandably excited about the impressive sales milestone, Mojang released an infographic on its official website that showcases just how large of a number 30 million really is.

While number is impressive, the addition of new skins based on The Simpsons for Xboxusers only further demonstrates that more content is en route for fans of the now iconic franchise. That said, an announcement pertaining to the next major update for the core Minecraft title on both PC and consoles is nowhere to be found, but that’ll hopefully change in the not-too-distant future.

That said, with additional items like TellTale Games’ Minecraft: Story Mode and, hopefully, a Minecraft filmon the horizon, there’s a lot to look forward to for followers of the beloved IP. Of course, the main appeal of the series will always be the core game itself, so the sooner fans can get an update on what to expect next for franchise the better. For now, however, keep it parked on Game Rant for more news on the future of Minecraft as soon as it becomes available.

‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’ Adds ‘Halo’ Mash-Up Pack

While, for many, it may not have seemed like a truly remarkable game at its outset, there’s no denying that Minecraft has seen a stunning evolution in the years since its release.

has seen a stunning evolution in the years since its release. Starting as a simple sandbox for players to exercise their creativity, the title has blossomed into an experience that manages to seamlessly reach from developers to modders to players.

This is no better highlighted than by the Mash-Up Packs that have begun appearing as DLC for the Xbox 360 edition of Minecraft . From the space opera that is Mass Effect to the peaks of Skyrim , Minecraft has run the gamut in terms of content variety. Taking a cue from one of its earlier Mash-Up Packs, the next batch of DLC will take gamers back into space, to the most iconic landscapes from the Halo series.

Following the trend of previous Mash-Up Packs, Master Chief’s journey into this voxel-based world will be far more than just a simple palette swap. Gamers who partake in this batch of downloadable content will gain access to the following:

An exclusive Halo -themed texture pack Themed menus and user interface Pre-made world featuring some of the series’ most iconic locales and structures Items inspired by the Halo universe 40 character skins Music spanning the series’ many titles

While it will never compare to the sheer enormity of the game’s PC modding community and world editing tools, it’s an exciting prospect to see this degree of collaboration occur between such large gaming icons. All too often it seems as though familiar franchises lose the push to leave the comfort zone sequels and season passes present. As such, it’s encouraging to see developers embracing this experimentation, much like what Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon did.

With Minecraft for Xbox One set to release in August, this couldn’t come at a better time. While there’s no confirmation that this content will be finding itself to next-gen consoles, it’s likely that it will eventually become available, especially since Xbox 360 saves will be transferrable to Xbox One. Following the success of Titanfall , it wouldn’t be at all surprising if that became the next franchise to receive the mash-up treatment.

Regardless, this should serve as an encouraging sign of the content to come. Despite first releasing on the Xbox 360 in 2012, 4J Studioshave been diligent in continuing to add worthwhile content years after release. If they can continue this trend with the upcoming Xbox One, PS4 and Vita versions, Minecraft will no doubt continue to perform well for years to come.

Would you like to see these Mash-Up Packs released for the upcoming Xbox One version of Minecraft ? What game or series would you like to see get the voxel treatment next?

Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ Gets Biggest Update Ever on July 10

‘Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ Gets Biggest Update Ever on July 10

Just recently Minecraft developer Mojang revealed that the console versions of their popular brick-based title had surpassed the PC/Mac versions in terms of total sales.

in terms of total sales. While the announcement itself — that Minecraft is a huge success on console — didn’t come as much of a surprise, it was a bit surprising to think that gamers preferred the couch-based experience of console Minecraft versus the PC version. Especially because the PC version carries the latest and the greatest when it comes to the game’s feature set.

Nevertheless, it appears gamers prefer their Minecraft in a little more palatable form. Sitting at a desk with mouse and keyboard is not nearly as comfortable as reclining on the couch with controller in-hand.

Whereas before, customization seemed to be the key for Minecraft ‘s success, now it appears ease of use is a bigger selling point. In fact, we bet that if Mojangcould bridge the gap between the PC/console versions of Minecraft and Minecraft: Pocket Edition — the mobile versionof the game — then that option would win out above all else.

Minecraft Pocket Edition Big July Update

Minecraft Pocket Edition Big July Update

Unfortunately, Minecraft: Pocket Edition has always trailed behind both its PC and console counterparts. There’s a clear gap between the two, and platform limitations and resource allocation (i.e. Mojang dedicating staff to the versions that sell the best) has always held the Pocket Edition back.

The good news, though, is that Minecraft: Pocket Edition is improving. In fact, on July 10th Pocket Edition will be getting its most substantial update yet.

Granted, most of the features in the pipeline for Minecraft: Pocket Edition ‘s July update are already available on the PC and console versions, but for mobile players these are exciting times. Read the full update list below:

Infinite worlds! Caves! Loads of new blocks and items including Monster Eggs and huge mushroom blocks. Wolves! Tame a loyal companion. Loads of new flowers! So pretty. New mobs, including the spooky endermen and less spooky Mooshrooms. New biomes from the PC version, including mesas, jungles, swamps and extreme hills. Abandoned mineshafts, villages, and many other cool places to explore. A brand-new “interaction” button. Never accidentally punch a sheep again! New feature generation, including lakes, vines and monster rooms. Many bugs fixed, and possibly a few added.

While it’s unlikely that Mojang will ever fully bridge the gap between Minecraft on PC (or even Minecraft on console) and the Pocket Edition , it’s nice to see they haven’t abandoned the mobile versions. At this point, Minecraft has become such a success that Mojang could have easily sat back and counted their money. Instead, the developer is dedicated to bringing the game to new platforms ( Xbox One, PS4, and Vita) and improving those experiences that are already on the market.

Which new feature are you most excited for? What features do you hope hit with the next Minecraft: Pocket Edition update?

Minecraft’ Has Sold More on Consoles Than PC & Mac

Minecraft’ Has Sold More on Consoles Than PC & Mac

‘Minecraft’ Has Sold More on Consoles Than PC & Mac

By now gamers are pretty familiar with the cultural phenomenon that is Minecraft .

Mojang‘s brick-based creative experience has dominated the gaming landscape since exiting beta a few years back, to the point it has become easier to name platforms the game isn’t on than to name platforms it is.

However, while Minecraf t is now a console game, a mobile game, and very shortly will be a next-gen game, it’s still widely considered to be a PC game first and foremost. PC is where the title started, and it’s where most of the latest updates launch first.

But while PC might still be considered king among the Minecraft faithful, it’s no longer king of sales. Just recently the collective console versionsof Minecraft passed the PC and Mac versions in terms of total sales.

The news comes courtesy of Mojang’s Patrick Geuder who says that, in addition to the console editions passing PC/Mac, worldwide sales for the entire franchise have reached 54 million.

Minecraft console editions together just passed Minecraft for PC/Mac. And across all platforms we've sold almost 54 million copies.— Patrick Geuder Saga (@pgeuder) June 25, 2014

While we suspect that plenty of those 54 million copies were double, triple, or dare we say quadruple dips by devoted fans, the sales numbers are nonetheless impressive. Hearing that the console versions are now outselling the PC/Mac versions, though, isn’t as surprising.

Why, you ask? Well, despite its early growth among the indie PC scene, Minecraft has dug its hooks deeply into younger gamers. Chances are you know at least one young gamer who plays Minecraft , and they likely own it on more than one platform. But most of those platforms, at least in my experience, are not PC.

It might be that parents feel more comfortable letting their kids play Minecraft on a console, or it could be the ease of use that comes with those platforms, but whatever the case is it seems the Xbox 360and PS3are now the new kings.

And we wouldn’t be surprised if the console space continued to gain ground; that is, before the Vita, and maybe even the 3DS, take hold of Minecraft . The series has already hit huge numbers thus far, but Minecraft on Vitacould be a massive hit.

How many different versions of Minecraft have you bought? Even if the console versions are the best selling do you still consider the PC version the best?

Whether it’s being aired on The Simpsons or enabling a blacksploitation parody , Minecraft is one of the games that frequently finds itself in the media spotlight and being used continually in creative ways.

is one of the games that frequently finds itself in the media spotlight and being used continually in creative ways. Few projects however, have lasted as long as Paradise Decay’s Minecraft -made Star Wars – A New Hope full length feature. The project, which was officially started three years ago, still has some lengths to go – but in the above teaser video, it’s clear to see that the movie has come a long way.

Notably, the video itself is crafted from 100% in-game Minecraft footage with absolutely no modifications, save for custom textures and art being used here and there. The video is currently at about an hour and ten minutes complete, and is on-schedule for a completely free release on YouTube next year.

To avoid copyright issues, the video will be released without sound – fans of the film willing to watch it in Minecraft -vision will have to play a copy of the original 1977 version alongside it to keep up on the audio side of things. Quoth the creator himself.

As for the game itself, a noticeable change is coming for all gamers soon: Minecraft head developer Jeb Bergensten tweeted about reducing the size of the player model’s arms by one pixel, a subtle change which admittedly gives the avatars a more androgynous body shape. Check it out for yourselves below:

Minecraft Smaller Arms

Minecraft Smaller Arms

When asked about the possible change, Jeb confirmed that it was to make female gamers feel more included in a world which was confirmed to have no gendersover two years ago. While one pixel doesn’t seem like much of a change, seeing it in action speaks louder than words.

“The reason why we wanted a ‘slimmer’ Steve [default Minecraft character] was because the broad-shoulder Steve would look masculine even with a feminine skin. Minecraft is played by both genders, but girls would sometimes feel left out… The same non-gender reasoning was one of the reasons why the male Steve sound effects were removed from the game a few years ago.”

Though this was tweeted about before the lastest snapshot came to be released, the one-pixel arm change has yet to be included officially in any public Minecraft editions. The latest snapshot just includes to small fixes for errors that were introduced in last week’s release: [Bug MC-62116] — Players loses CommandStats{} after Death [Bug MC-62134] — #players are taking up space on the sidebar display

Both snapshots have introduced a new thread batch system which should help system performance, which should help those on lower-end systems get better framerates and potentially even upsize their rendering distance.

The long awaited Minecraft update was finally released by Mojang this week, introducing a plethora of new items, horses and other changes into the mix.

Minecraft Horse Update

Minecraft Horse Update

into the mix. Anyone who logged in this week probably noticed the new launcher system, but there’s so much new content that we fear some might have missed out on some of the sweet, sweet Minecraft action. Without further ado, here’s our official 1.6 Update Guide! Let’s start off with the obvious:

Minecraft Horses

Minecraft Horses

Horses

By far and away, the most anticipated inclusion in the fabled Horse Update has predictably been the horses themselves. This includes their mob-cousins mules and donkeys, which each have their own use in the Minecraft world. Horses come in 7 different colors with up to 5 different secondary colors entitled markings. These create a large caste of different horses, which can then be bred with each other to create faster and stronger offspring.

Once a player finds horses in the wild (most commonly in a Plains Biome), the player must attempt to tame them by riding a horse until it no longer throws the player off. Once a taming is successful, hearts will float above the horse’s head and it will now allow the player to mount it, though, players must place a saddle on the horse to be able actually steer the animal and make it jump. The taming processes for mules and donkeys is the exact same, though they cannot be ridden – instead, players can place chests upon them and can herd them as mobile item-storage mobs.

Horses cut travel times down by a large margin, as they are much faster than players and can jump further and higher as well. Though they cannot go over water that is two blocks deep and often get stuck in jungle biomes, they’re a must-have for anyone who wants to explore the Overworld in a more efficient fashion. When running, horses automatically scale up one block heights, making hillside travelling much easier. Holding the jump button will charge a jump to cover more height, whilst pressing the sneak button will dismount the player from the animal.

Horses can be fed either Gold Carrots or Golden Apples to activate their ‘love mode’, and will immediately proceed to procreate like any other mob animal. Based on the genetics of its parents, the offspring will usually grow into an improved steed, with better traits in speed, more health or a greater ability to jump. Thus, it’s a good idea to breed horses so you have improved animals to use.

At the moment, Skelton and Zombie horses are included in the game, however, they can neither be tamed or bred. It’s likely that at some point they will be used by enemy mobs. For now, a Zombie riding an undead horse? That’s a fight for another day.

Minecraft 1.6 Update Items

Minecraft 1.6 Update Items

Items

The 1.6 update includes three new items, which can all unsurprisingly tie back to horses (though only one of them is limited to the new animal). Horse Armor is, predictably, the item which can only be used on horses. The armor comes in Iron, Gold and Diamond variants (with defensive values of 5, 7 and 11 respectively) and can be placed on a horse by accessing the inventory system whilst riding the animal itself. Unlike player armor, horse armor only has one piece, which makes replacing or swapping the armor very easy in comparison. It can’t be made be players, so it must be acquired from chests in dungeons and nether fortresses.

Leashes have also been added into the game, craftable by using 4 pieces of string and a slimeball. When holding a leash, players can right-click a nearby passive mob to attach the leash and can then guide the mob behind them. Players can also right-click a fence to attach the mob to the fence, where the leash will stay in place until it is hit by the player. Once hit, the leash will always drop in a pick-up item state. Leashes can stretch up to 10 spaces before they break, and will hold animals back if they’re attached to a fence. As of the 1.6.1 Update, the only mobs which can’t be placed on leashes are hostile mobs and bats.

Name Tags are the last new item added in the update, and currently haven no recipe for crafting. Despite this, the item can still be accessed from dungeon chests and creative mode. When placed in an anvil, players will have the option to write a name on the tag, and can then right-click any mob to ‘name’ the creature. As of current release, adding a name to the name tag costs experience points by the letter. Whenever the player enters within 7 blocks of the named creature, the name will appear above its head. Mobs which have a name tag will not de-spawn, meaning they will never disappear from the game even if the player travels large distances away from the creature. Both passive and enemy mobs can be named, but upon death neither type of mob will drop the name tag for re-use.

Minecraft 1.6 Update Blocks

Minecraft 1.6 Update Blocks

Blocks

There are plenty of new block types in the 1.6 update, and it should leave any gamers wanting more designing options breathless. Hay Stacks can be created from 9 pieces of wheat, and are used by horses, donkeys and mules to renew their health. Likewise, blocks of coal can now be created from 9 coal pieces, and can be placed in a furnace to smelt 80 items (in contrast, 9 coal pieces on their own can only smelt 72). The Coal Block will burn like a wood block, and should be placed away from lava if its use is intended for decorative purposes.

Hardened Clay blocks are created by smelting clay in a furnace. The clay will dye to a brownish tinge and will have more blast resistance than normal clay. It can be used as a building material, and allows for the next step of decorative design: Stained Clay Blocks. By placing 8 hardened blocks around 1 color-defining piece (much akin to dying wool) in the inventory menu, players can now dye clay blocks to the same multitude of colours, allowing for painted walls which aren’t made out of wool and lack the high flammability of the sheep-based block.

Players can also now place carpets, which are crafted from two pieces of wool dyed the same color. This will create 3 carpet pieces, which have the same thickness as a pressure plate but don’t affect player height when trod upon. This allows for more sensible building, as players can have floors made of wood or stone and simply place carpets on top of them. This way blocks functioning as both a floor and a ceiling will look less silly than if they’d been made of wool. Truth be told, this is an overdue addition, but one which should make plenty of house-builders very happy.

Minecraft Features

Minecraft Features

Additional Features

The new Resource Park system is a replacement API for the old texture pack system. Whilst previously it was only possible to replace textures in the game, the new Resource Pack system allows for gamers to modify sounds, fonts, music, languages and even the end credits without having to dip into any of the game’s code. This will allow for things like ‘scary’ texture packs to include more horrifying sounds and music, and all of this is easily interchangeable in the in-game menu.

There are also three new Status Effects included in the game, though no potions currently exist to produce them. The first is called Health Boost, which places 2 extra heart slots in a player’s health until the potion runs out. Two more hearts are added for each level the potion is at. Absorption adds 2 hearts per level as well, which re-appear every 30 seconds if they had been depleted. As usual, this only lasts the length of the potion. Lastly, the Saturation status effect causes the player’s hunger meter to be filled by 1 slot per second, until the potion runs its course. It is likely that the craftable potions for these will be included in the next update, but until then they’ll only be accessible in Creative Mode.

In addition to the above, here’s a list of small changes that the 1.6 and 1.6.1 updates have brought to the table: Charcoal now has a new texture so it looks noticeably different from Coal. Lapis Lazuli Blocks now have a thin blue border about a pixel wide. Gold Apples now require Gold Ingots instead of Gold Nuggets to craft, and utilizes the new Absorption State. Glistering Melons now required 8 Gold Nuggets to craft. Spawn Eggs can now be placed on water. Any Mob named ‘Dinnerbone’ or ‘Grumm’ with a nametag are placed upside down. Zombies can now lock onto a player from 40 blocks away, a drastic increase of their previous 16 block sight-range. Look out! Zombies now also have a small chance to generating more zombies when damaged or not being looked at. Villagers now have their own set of sounds! Spiders may now spawn with active potion effects. Desert Biomes no longer contain water lakes when generated.

That about sums up everything you need to know about the update, which just put more distance between the computer version and the console editionof the game, a version that typically lags far behind the computer edition in terms of features.

What do you think about the 1.6 Update, Ranters? Was it worth the wait, or would you like more frequent, smaller updates?

Some of the most exciting prospects in gaming pertain to crossovers.

Some of the most exciting prospects in gaming pertain to crossovers. It’s always exciting to see universes collide and Mojang’s indie smash-hit, Minecraft , has been a prime candidate for various crossovers ever since it first made its debut. Whether it’s player skins developed by the user base on PC or officially licensed ones created for the game on Xbox 360, there have been plenty of recognizable brands and characters to appear in the game.

Now it has been announced that the latest game crossing paths with Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition will be none other than Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in a massive mash-up pack.

Following in the footsteps of the previously released Mass Effect 3 mash-up, the new Skyrim DLC will feature a bevy of new content that’s themed after the immensely successful fantasy game. 4J Studios, the developer responsible for porting Minecraft to 360, will be handling the content, effectively transforming Bethesda’s property into a very blocky version of its original self.

In all, the special downloadable content will include the following:

An exclusive Skyrim -themed texture set 40 character skins Themed menus and user interface Exclusive craftable items More than 20 iconic selections from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim original game soundtrack

If all that wasn’t already enough for fans of both properties, the mash-up will also include an entirely pre-made world that recreates classic areas from the mythical land of Skyrim. Whiterun, Riverwood, and Bleak Falls Barrow can all be found within the pre-made world, while the texture pack helps to really immerse players in the square-centric province.

Since both titles are wildly successful, it’s very likely that this new downloadable content will also find success. That said, it’s funny to note that at one point Mojang and Bethesda were locked in a lawsuitover the rights to the name Scrolls — a game that Mojang is still working on and adding to. Both companies have since reached an agreement and apparently relations were good enough to spawn this new pack.

There’s currently no release date set for the new DLC, but anxious fans can get their hands on the content for the first time during Minecon 2013 in Orlando, Florida between November 2nd and 3rd.

Will you be picking up the new DLC pack, Ranters? Which other mash-ups would you like to see?

Mass Effect and Minecraft aren’t all that similar.

aren’t all that similar. When you look at their gameplay they have nothing in common, one being a first person survival crafting game, the other a third person action RPG space adventure. However if you look at it thematically, they are perhaps closer than first meets the eye with creation and world building being key components of both franchises. While M inecraft is a more literal interpretation that allows players to literally shape the world physically, Mass Effect is about building your own world through narrative, decision making and character interaction. With that in mind, both franchises look to be on the verge of getting married.

Bothand Mass Effect are currently waiting for new console updates so in the meantime, here is something to tide Xbox 360 players over. On September 4th, fans will be able to literally build their own Mass Effect playground as Mojang and BioWare have announced a Mash-Up between the franchises on the Xbox 360 for $3.99.

In what is called the “first Mash-up” from 4J Studios, the add-on will have a substantial amount of Mass Effect themed content that will transform the world of Minecraft. Players will get Mass Effect specific materials and items to craft, as well as “36 pixel-perfect Mass Effect character skins and 22 music tracks from the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack.” On top of that, gamers will be able to explore a pre-made location in the form of the Cerberus Mars Facility, which has been recreated from the early parts of Mass Effect 3 . How faithfully the facility has been adapted, including the size of the map, has not yet been specified.

One of the reasons that Minecraft has become so successful and remains playable for hardcore fans is due of the thriving community that surrounds it. The painstakingly accurate recreationsand extensive mod listsis what has kept PC gamers playing for years after launch. While the Xbox 360 has had substantial updates, it hasn’t had much in the way of the way of add-ons. Hopefully this Mash-Up will give both Minecraft and Mass Effect fans reason to keep exploring and shaping their own worlds.

It is worth keeping in mind that even for a cheap price, Micecraft players won’t be used to paying for modded content. More experienced PC gamers have been adding and subtracting from their Minecraft experiences free and at will for years and it remains to be seen just how many players are willing to pay for that ability on the Xbox 360. The seal of approval of Mojang, BioWare and EA could be enough to entice fans and, as indicated when called the “first Mash-Up”, if the add-on does well there is always the possibility of more franchise mashups in the future.

Who knows what’s in store for Minecraft when it comes to Xbox One and makes the jump to the PlayStation family, as it will release on the Vita, PS3 and PS4. With themed crossover DLC such as this, the potential for future monetization is limitless.

The Mass Effect Minecraft: Xbox 360 Mash-Up Pack add-on will be available to download on September 4, 2013 on the Xbox 360.

to consoles, has been tirelessly working on updating the Xbox 360 version of the game as of late. With plenty of additional updates still planned for the ridiculously successful (and blocky) survival game, not to mention recently releasing the title on PlayStation 3, there’s still much work to be done. That said, there hasn’t been any shortage of downloadable content in the form of skins or entire texture packs pertaining to blockbuster properties, and now Marvel’s Avengers will be getting in on the cube-based fun.

The new pack will include an impressive 35 skins based on iconic superheroes and villains that have been associated with Marvel’s favorite team, with a majority being based on the characters that appeared in the latest Avengers motion picture — as well as a few familiar faces from the comic books. With that in mind, this isn’t a texture pack like the previously announced Skyrim add-onor Mass Effect mash-up, so players will have to build their own S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier to hangout on.

The official press release confirmed that Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Loki, Wasp, Falcon, Vision, Maria Hill, and Agent Coulson will all be part of the add-on, while screenshots confirm several other characters (such as Taskmaster, Spider-Woman, Iron Patriot, etc.) will also be included. Oddly enough, there’s no sign of other popular characters like Spider-Man, Wolverine, or Deadpool, which should be taken as a sign that there is still plenty of additional Marvel content to come.

As for a release date, Microsoft and Mojang have yet to confirm anything more than a generic “coming soon” window for this DLC, but our guess is that it will be arriving any day now. As for a price, it’s not ridiculous to suggest that it will fall in line with past skin packs, so fans shouldn’t have to pay too much to deck out their avatar in Iron Man swag. PS3 owners, on the other hand, may be left waiting a little bit longer for the skins, as they have yet to be announced for Sony’s platform.

Minecraft: Xbox One Edition’ Building Towards August Release

By now everyone and their grandmothers have likely heard of Minecraft through one means or another, although it’s kind of hard not to be familiar with the property when it’s available on so many different formats.

through one means or another, although it’s kind of hard not to be familiar with the property when it’s available on so many different formats. Now Mojanghas announced when fans of the blocky survival title can expect to see its baby arrive on its first next-gen console, which means those anxiously anticipating the arrival of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition now have a particular month to anticipate.

Microsoftand Mojang have finally announced that gamers can look forward to Minecraft arriving on the Xbox One this August. The companies, however, failed to mention a specific day in the summer month that the indie smash-hit will be arriving. In lieu of a particular day in August, the companies opted to inform fans of a neat little incentive for Minecraft connoisseurs that are making a vertical console upgrade from the 360.

The promotion is exclusively for those that already own a physical or downloadable copy of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition , and permits these consumers to an exclusive discount when upgrading to the Xbox One Edition . How significant is the cost whilst upgrading? Why it’ll only run shoppers a mere $4.99 to download the complete game on their next-gen Microsoft console. Those that never picked up the 360 version will be charged the full $19.99 price tag, which still isn’t too bad considering the amount of time the game has been known to occupy.

Minecraft Xbox One Really Close

Minecraft Xbox One Really Close

Some of, but not all, skin and texture packs will also make the next-gen jump. It’s unknown which packs will be getting the axe, but Mojang and Microsoft will likely provide fans with those details closer to Minecraft: Xbox One Edition ‘s release.

Those that plan on capitalizing on the aforementioned discount should know that the offer will be available for a full year after the game’s launch, at which point the deal will come to a close — presumably never to be seen again. Keeping that in mind, 360 owners may be delighted to learn that all of their saved files from the older console can be transferred to the Xbox One, although Mojang has yet to go into too much detail regarding how fans will go about doing that.

Since 12 million gamers purchased Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition , this deal is good news for any of those that dreaded repurchasing the entire game on their new console. Presumably a similar incentive will also be applied to anyone that eventually upgrades from the PS3 version to the PS4 one, but that has yet to be announced.

Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will arrive on Xbox One in August 2014.

Titanfall’ Beta Impressions and Gameplay Video

Titanfall’ Beta Impressions and Gameplay Video

‘Titanfall’ Beta Impressions and Gameplay Video
38
Over the last week, Xbox One and PC players have been diving head first into the Titanfall beta for their first tease of Respawn Entertainment ‘s new title.

‘s new title. There have been stumbles, but ultimately most would call the beta test a success, as it generated a ton of additional buzz for what is already one of the year’s biggest releases .

Now that the Titanfall beta is on the verge of concluding, it’s time to take a look back and highlight what was and what wasn’t good about the experience. Join Game Rant editors Rob Keyes, Ben Kendrick, Andrew Dyce, and Anthony Taormina as we share our thoughts on the Titanfal l beta in the above video.

While most of our 45-minute experience online was without fault, there is a 5-minute chunk where the four of us struggle to get into a Last Titan Standing match. It’s unclear whether the fault is with the Titanfall servers or the Xbox One party system, but whatever the case something wasn’t working right. Sure, we could have easily edited this portion out for pacing purposes, but it’s important to include the Titanfall beta experience warts and all.

Once in a match, however, Titanfall still continues to impress. The fluid movement speed, the verticality, and the variety are still as exciting as they were back when we previewed the betatwo weeks ago.

Titanfall Beta Gameplay Video

But beyond the appeal of a multiplayer shooter with two dynamics (Pilot and Titan), Titanfall stands out because it supports a variety of play styles. Someone like GR editor Ben Kendrick, who isn’t a die-hard multiplayer shooter fan, can still contribute without being a detriment to the team. In fact, as you can see in our first Hardpoint Dominationmatch, he’s actually the MVP.

That seemingly insignificant element might be Titanfall ‘s biggest appeal: it’s accommodating nature. This isn’t a game where only the best players get Titans or better weapons, everyone has access to them and everyone can contribute, even if it means picking off A.I. grunts and spectres.

That being said, we still want to see more of Titanfall in order to better evaluate the full package. The beta was certainly a nice tease, but its limited options in terms of maps and Titan types left a lot to be desired. Which is a good thing.

Game Rant will have a full review for Titanfall when the game launches in March, but for now our feelings are pretty clear: we want to play more, especially with friends. You can’t ask for much more than that.

How have you enjoyed you time with the Titanfall beta? Has the beta convinced you the game is worth picking up next month?

Titanfall releases March 11, 2014 for the PC and Xbox One; and March 25th for the Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy X X2 Kingdom Hearts HD Trailers

Final Fantasy X X2 Kingdom Hearts HD Trailers

HD remakes and remasters have been trending lately, especially as newer generations of gamers want to try out the classics. But, let’s be honest, younger players are a little spoiled. They’re used to the crisp high-definition graphics of today — smooth edges, bright colors, that sort of thing.

No company has been embracing this trend more fervently than Square Enix. At E3 2013, Square was showing off two separate titles, both remastered, from two of its most beloved series: Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster . Each title contains at least two games, so there is plenty of HD bang for your buck. We gave both of them a whirl to see how they’ve held up after all these years. Will the HD facelifts entice younger players to pick these games up and old-schoolers to experience them all over again? Read on for our impressions.

While the graphics are clearly what Square is marketing, the good stuff isn’t just found on the surface. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will feature the International Version of both games, something new to those outside of Japan. For Final Fantasy X , that means new bosses and a few other new features, such as new Sphere Grids. For Final Fantasy X-2, gamers will be able to snag new Dress Spheres, experiment with the Creature Create system and face an entirely new final boss, which comes complete with a new ending and expanded story.

The demo available at the Square Enixbooth didn’t give us a chance to try out any of these new features, but it did give us an opportunity to play through certain parts of the game, including Final Fantasy X ‘s remastered opening, which is even more stunning than we remember it — so much so that we hardly even noticed Tidus’ infamous voice. Beauty is only skin deep, however, and the real appeal comes from the new features that players, both old and new, will be experiencing for the first time.

will do a lot of the same in that it will also include three games, two of which are playable ( Kingdom Hearts and Re: Chain of Memories), and one that has been condensed into a remastered cinematic (3 58/2 Days). The original Kingdom Hearts , likewill be the international version, which includes new scenes, plot points, weapons, items and a number of gameplay adjustments. Music lovers will be able to appreciate the sounds as well as the sights, thanks to a large number of re-recorded tracks featuring live orchestral arrangements which replace some of the original PlayStation 2 music.

The original games were never terrible graphically, but the remastering significantly improves them. Like with the previous game, most of the new features were not available in the demos, but what was available was enough to grab people’s attention — at least visually. Unfortunately, what little new content we did play (a new enemy type) broke the game. Not that we’re worried, though. These things happen. It was just nice to explore the game once again with a little spit shine.

As someone who has personally wanted to introduce theseries to friends, this title will make a great jumping off point and acts as the perfect primer for the sequel. However, it’s hard not to wonder why Kingdom Hearts II wasn’t included, especially with Kingdom Hearts III being announced. Since gamers have been waiting eight solid years for even a peep of a proper third installment, it would be nice to have a complete refresher because, as fans of the series will tell you, the story is a little convoluted. We’ll have to wait and see if Square Enix has plans to remaster it.

Both games have a clear mission: to reinvigorate adoration from fans, attract new ones and drum up excitement for recently announced sequels. If these were straight up HD remasters I would recommend sticking with the originals, as they are still fantastic games, but with the multitude of new features, inclusion of multiple games and the fantastic $39.99 price tag, they will be absolutely worth the investment.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX will launch in North America on September 10, 2013, exclusively for the PS3.

Final Fantasy X/x-2 HD Remaster will launch on December 31, 2013, for the PS3 and Vita.

New ‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ Trailer Showcases More Gameplay

New ‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ Trailer Showcases More Gameplay

47
At E3 2013 , Square Enix took the stage during Sony’s Press Conference to confirm two highly anticipated projects: Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 .

. Both announcements were met with tremendous fanfare, but the true showstopper was Kingdom Hearts .

However, while Square Enixdid bring some new footageof the sequel, it was fairly short and showcased little gameplay. It was a solid tease, but not enough for fans to get a true sense of the game’s design, let alone any gameplay advancements.

At this year’s D23 Expo in Japan, however, Square Enix was ready to show off just a little bit more of Kingdom Hearts 3 in the form of a new 2-minute trailer. The footage contained within (seen below courtesy of IGN ) looks a lot like classic Kingdom Hearts , albeit with a few new flourishes and crisper visuals.

In the trailer, players will notice that a lot of the gameplay from the first two Kingdom Hearts games appears to be relatively unchanged. Sora still battles the heartless with his Keyblade, and Goofy and Donald are around to lend a hand/wing where necessary. As far as updates/changes to the combat, Sora is also seen firing particles from his Keyblade — a nice visual effect — before the weapon eventually transforms into two pistols.

That particular sequence concludes with Sora riding on and attacking from what looks like Captain Hook’s pirate ship from Peter Pan . It’s unclear where exactly the ship comes from – whether it’s a ‘Summon’ or something else – but it looks fantastic regardless.

In addition to the more traditional combat scenario, the footage also features a boss battle with a rock giant. In this battle, Sora, Donald, and Goofy are circulate around the enemy in a train car from Disneyland’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride, jabbing at various weak points. The sequence itself looks to be a quick-time event, and highlights yet another staple of the franchise: blending iconic Disneybrands with Square’s signature style of combat.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Gameplay Trailer

Kingdom Hearts 3 Gameplay Trailer

Overall, what was on display at D23 is a good start — like the E3 presentation — but still provided little clues as to Kingdom Hearts 3 ‘s story. Granted, with a story as complex as Kingdom Hearts ‘ it would be hard to sum up the future of the franchise in a short trailer, but any clues would be welcome.

On the gameplay side of things, Kingdom Hearts 3 looks to be exactly what fans expect — no more, no less. Not to say that’s a bad thing, on the contrary, in fact; after several years since Kingdom Hearts 2 it will be refreshing to hop back into that combat.

And, rather than take things in a different direction as the franchise makes the leap to the next-gen, it appears Square Enix is sticking with the series’ colorful art style, only with a lot more detail. Like the first trailer, this is a great way to tease the project, without giving too much away just yet.

What do you think of Kingdom Hearts 3 ‘s combat? Does it live up to your expectations?

Kingdom Hearts 3 has no release date, but will be available on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Cancelled ‘Kingdom Hearts’ Game Featured ‘Star Wars’ & ‘Frozen’ Worlds

Cancelled ‘Kingdom Hearts’ Game Featured ‘Star Wars’ & ‘Frozen’ Worlds

1,128
It may only have two mainline releases under its belt, but the Kingdom Hearts series has kept a high level of interest through spin-offs, mobile titles, and HD remasters .

. Each game has been tied back to the main series, albeit slightly, but most importantly they have given players new Final Fantasy and Disney worlds to explore.

However, as the Disneybrand has grown many have wondered whether the Kingdom Hearts games might soon balloon to include the new properties under the Mouse House’s umbrella. Turns out, at least one Kingdom Hearts game was in development that fit that bill.

Although Kingdom Hearts: Fragmented Keys never actually made it past the early development stage, the mobile title apparently had some big plans as far as Disneytie-ins were concerned. According to fan site KH13 , who saw screenshots from the cancelled Kingdom Hearts game, Fragmented Keys was to feature levels inspired by Star Wars , Wreck-It Ralph , and a Frozen world as part of its story.

While the site does not say why Kingdom Hearts: Fragmented Keys was cancelled, chances are the upcoming release of Kingdom Hearts 3 played a part. Square Enix’s long awaited sequelis easily one of the most high profile games on their docket, and as a result expectations are high. So, releasing a mobile game may have diminished that impact some, especially since Kingdom Hearts: Fragmented Keys was actually developed by Disney.

Concept art for the ‘Frozen’ world in cancelled ‘Kingdom Hearts’ mobile game.

It’s also possible that Square Enix decided to take ideas from Fragmented Keys and roll them into Kingdom Hearts 3 . Both a Star Wars and a Frozen world sound like big tie-ins for the series, and are perfect fits for this highly anticipated sequel. Kingdom Hearts has always been a major player among the Final Fantasy crowd, but Disney fans have been a little harder to entice. Putting a billion dollar property like Frozen in the game, however, could be the ticket to increased sales.

The good news is that a new Kingdom Hearts game is in development regardless of Fragmented Keys ’ cancellation. Where before gamers would have maligned missed opportunities for the Disney tie-in franchise, now they have a fully fledged sequel to look forward to. One that may release as soon as this year.

Whatever the case may be, don’t be surprised if Square Enix and Disney double down on their big acquisitions ( Marvel and Star Wars are rumored for Kingdom Hearts 3 ) and franchises ( Frozen , Big Hero 6 ) with this third iteration.

Would you have played a Kingdom Hearts mobile game? Do you think Square Enix is saving the big tie-ins for Kingdom Hearts 3 ?

How Long Has Kingdom Hearts 3 Been in Development?

How Long Has Kingdom Hearts 3 Been in Development?

381
Although Disney has a wide range of properties within their stable, even more so thanks to the acquisition of Marvel and LucasFilm , the studio’s game properties boil down to a few biggies.

, the studio’s game properties boil down to a few biggies. With that in mind, most headed into Disney Interactive’s D23 presentation with three major titles on their mind: Star Wars: Battlefront , Disney Infinity 3.0 , and Kingdom Hearts 3 .

For both Star Wars: Battlefront and Disney Infinity 3.0 , the expectation was that we would see some more snippets of gameplay, but nothing too revelatory. After all, the games are set to release in a few short months – or in the case of Disney Infinity , weeks – so presumably most of the big reveals have been made. But for Kingdom Hearts 3 , we had no idea what to expect.

So, when Shinji Hashimoto took the stage at D23, fans were chomping at the bit to discover what new surprises the team at Square Enix had in store for Sora’s next adventure. And, as it turns out, that adventure will now include a Big Hero 6 world, wherein Sora teams up with Baymax to fight a darkness-fueled version of the all-white super hero.

However, while the Big Hero 6 reveal was seemingly Square Enix’s big ticket item for D23, the producers did drop one piece of off-hand info that had us thinking. During the presentation, another producer mentioned that Kingdom Hearts 3 has been in development for “about two years now,” which, to our knowledge, is the first we’ve truly heard about a timeline for the game.

Obviously, Square Enix is a developer that likes to take their time, but two years is potentially further along, or conversely not as far along, than we thought. And with the average game taking between 2-4 years to develop, it’s entirely likely we won’t see Kingdom Hearts 3 on store shelves until 2017 at the earliest. Clearly, the Kingdom Hearts 3 reveal from two years agowas made at the very early stages of the game’s development.

Kingdom Hearts 3 E3 2105 Gameplay

Kingdom Hearts 3 E3 2105 Gameplay

Of course, even a presumed 2017 release for Kingdom Hearts 3 is a conservative estimate. Much like Blizzard or Bethesda, when it comes to their most beloved properties, Square Enix likes to take their time. Not to mention, the studio already has Final Fantasy 15 and the recently announcedto focus on, both of which are being directed by JPRG legend Tetsuya Nomura. However, Nomura’s work on FF 15 is apparently done, and his focus is now on Kingdom Hearts .

What’s most curious about Kingdom Hearts 3 ’s timeline is that we’ve barely seen any gameplay. There was the tech demo shown at E3 2013and some new footage released this year, but we haven’t really seen the game in action. Most of the bigger reveals, like the Big Hero 6 and Tangled worlds, have been live action interviews accompanied by concept art. That’s not the sign of a game that is very far in development, although we could be wrong.

So, while other developers are waiting to announce games until they are nearly done, Square Enix is going a different route. Unfortunately, since many of their titles are among the most highly anticipated, it makes the uncertainty of release that much harder to stomach. We know that Kingdom Hearts 3 has been in development for two years, and its “basic systems are complete,” but the game may not be as far along as that timeline implies.

How far into development do you think Kingdom Hearts 3 is? Will the game release before or after fall 2017?

Electronic Arts’ ‘Star Wars’ Licensing Deal Only Lasts 10 Years

Electronic Arts’ ‘Star Wars’ Licensing Deal Only Lasts 10 Years

70
Earlier this year, Electronic Arts hit pay dirt when the signed a deal with Disney to publish and develop games based around the Star Wars franchise.

franchise. It was an unexpected licensing deal — not unlike the same one Disney signed to acquire LucasFilm— but one that made sense if Disney wanted to keep the franchise under one house.

At the same time, there were questions as to how Electronic Artsplanned to use the Star Wars license — what types of games they might develop, how they might tie-in to the pre-existing universe? We know now a little more about Electronic Arts’ plans, but a recent Q&A session with EA’s Blake Jorgensen has revealed more.

According to Jorgensen, when EA inked the deal with Disney it was only a 10-year agreement. After that, EA presumably has first dibs at re-upping, but Disney will also be able to shop the Star Wars license around.

“We struck what we believe is a fantastic deal which allows us to be able to build games in many different genres across multiple types of platforms over 10 years.”

Additionally, Jorgensen revealed that Electronic Arts doesn’t plan on creating games that will directly tie-in with Star Wars: Episode 7 , the forthcoming JJ Abrams blockbuster. And if that film is a success (if?!), EA won’t be interested in tie-ins for those future films either.

That being said, Electronic Arts is not averse to borrowing some elements from previously released and upcoming Star Wars films if it fits the needs of a game. So, if Episode 7 introduces some planet, character, idea that Electronic Arts likes, they might use it in a future game. Thankfully, they will not be making tie-in games.

“The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is that it’s so broad and so deep, you don’t have to do a movie game, you can do a game that’s very focused on the world that’s been created around Star Wars.”

The fact that EA hit the ground running with the Star Wars franchise in tow makes much more sense now that we know the licensing deal is for 10 years. The publisher put several studios (DICE, Visceral Games, BioWare) to work even before the deal was finalizedpresumably in the hopes of getting product onto store shelves in 2015 (when Episode 7 hits theaters) and in 2016.

As far as what each studio is working on, we only know that DICE is busy with Star Wars: Battlefront , but everything else is a mystery. The good news, though, is that whatever BioWareand Visceral Gamesare working on is not a tie-in game.

How do you feel about Electronic Arts taking over Star Wars game development knowing now that it’s only for 10 years? If they deliver quality games would you like to see them continue?

PlayStation TV Out Now in North America But It’s Not That Great

PlayStation TV Out Now in North America But It’s Not That Great

Sony’s PlayStation TV released yesterday in North America but not without some problems for early adopters.

released yesterday in North America but not without some problems for early adopters. Gamers who purchased Sony’s new streaming “console” may notice that a number of classic Sony titles that were supposed to be compatible with the system have been suspiciously removed from the device’s official compatibility list. To make matters worse, even Netflix is not functioning on the device.

Sony’s most recently updated listof compatible PlayStation TV games no longer features certain titles in the PSP, PSOne classics and PS Minis categories. Among the most notable removed titles are, Silent Hill , Sulkoden and Valkryia Chronicles 2 . A complete list of all titles that appear to have been removed from Sony’s earlier documentation can be found on NeoGAF. No Vita games appear to have been removed.

While some new PlayStation TV owners may be bummed to discover the fewer number of available offerings, it’s hard to say that this is a huge blow for the system. Since the PlayStation TV’s initial announcement, Sony has positioned itas more of a streaming device for the whole family rather than a dedicated game player. Most users in the system’s target audience probably won’t care that much about the absence of Twisted Metal: Head-On . Netflix however, is another story.

Inexplicably, a number of users are claiming that the PlayStation TV’s Netflix app is not functioning properly and that an error message pops up which states that the app is “not compatible with PlayStation TV.” Well, there goes family movie night.

Some games being removed from the compatibility list can maybe be excused but this Netflix problem just boggles the mind. This isn’t Sony’s first rodeo with Netflix – the app is also available on PlayStation 3and PlayStation 4. Add in the fact that Netflix is one of the most widely used apps among the microconsole’s user base and it just seems a little ridiculous that Sony wouldn’t have worked out all of the bugs ahead of launch.

A story posted late last night on Gizmodo paints an even darker picture. Gizmodo reached out to Sony when it discovered that in addition to Netflix, the Hulu Plus and YouTube apps were not working either. Sony sidestepped the issue, stating instead that “video streaming apps Crackle, Crunchyroll and Quello” are available at launch. Why are these other ones listed and advertised then? Keep in mind, these omissions are in addition to the obstacles in getting some games to work on PlayStation TV.

The scariest development may be the quote from an unnamed Netflix representative Gizmodo claimed it spoke to who said, “We have no current support plans for Netflix on PS TV.” If that’s actually true, wow. Just wow.

To be fair, there are of course other things to do with the PlayStation TV while Sony works on getting its video streaming up to speed. The PlayStation TV will allow gamers with a PlayStation 4 to stream gameplay to a second screen on the same network. Sony’s PlayStation Now service is available on the console and a number of PlayStation 3 games are available for rent.

10 Disney Worlds That Should Be in ‘Kingdom Hearts’

10 Disney Worlds That Should Be in ‘Kingdom Hearts’

332
Development of Kingdom Hearts 3 hasn’t exactly reached The Last Guardian status just yet, but it’s no secret that Square Enix has been taking its time with the next major step in the story of Sora, Donald and Goofy.

has been taking its time with the next major step in the story of Sora, Donald and Goofy. Development was initially delayed because most developers from theteam were working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII (now known as), but with that game finally making significant progress, Square was able to return to its Disneymeets Final Fantasy mash up.

The Japanese publisher first teased KH3 during E3 2013 with a short clip of Sora battling Heartless. Since then, further details have leaked out, including what’s going on with the in-game enginealong with some rumors that Marvel and Star Wars characters might make an appearancein the franchise.

In fact, speculation about which Disney worlds might show up in the next title hit a new high last week with the release of some screenshots detailing worlds that were in considerationfor a now abandoned mobile game. The photos include concept art for Star Wars , Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen , among others.

So with development of KH3 now firmly underway, it’s time to consider which Disney worlds could potentially make an appearance in Kingdom Hearts 3 or beyond. Here are 10 Disney worlds we’d love to see in Kingdom Hearts .

Star Wars

Star Wars Disney

Star Wars Disney

Might as well start with the franchise that has been most discussed in recent rumors. Obviously Star Wars was not originally a Disney property, but when George Lucas sold the rights to the franchise in 2012, Kingdom Hearts fans immediately got their hopes up.

Theuniverse is as vast as any on this list, but it would be cool if players could play through a few scenes from the actual movies in a fashion at least somewhat similar to how Kingdom Hearts 2 handled its version of TRON. One of the coolest parts of playing through a Disney world in Kingdom Hearts is checking out the new costumes Sora, Donald and Goofy wear in order to blend in with the environment. The Keyblade designed as a lightsaber, Goofy as C-3PO and Donald as R2-D2 all seem like obvious choices. While it might depend on KH3 ‘s release date, it would be cool if the game had a few references to the upcoming J.J. Abrams trilogy of new films.

Marvel’s The Avengers

The Avengers

The Avengers

Marvelwas the other rumored franchise to possibly get its due in the next Kingdom Hearts . While there are a lot of characters and worlds to choose from, The Avengers is by far Marvel’s most popular series of movies based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and there are at least three more major Avengers films releasing over the next four years, including The Avengers: Age of Ultron this May.

Going with an Avengers theme would let Square Enix squeeze as many Marvel characters into the game as they can. Costume possibilities for Sora and friends seem endless, but how about turning the Keyblade into an Iron Man-like arm cannon, turning Goofy’s shield into the one from Captain America and transforming Donald’s wand into something resembling Thor’s hammer?

Wreck-It Ralph

wreck it ralph logo

The characters in Kingdom Hearts are able to travel freely through different Disney worlds throughout the series, so a movie about video game characters that can travel into different worlds through the power cables in an arcade seems like a match made in heaven. TRON featured one of the trippiest looking worlds in Kingdom Hearts so far, but chances are the Pixar meets retro graphics of Wreck-It Ralph would give it a run for its money.

Wreck-It Ralph was a mash up of fake and real world video game characters, but the opportunity to see characters like Bowser or a ghost from Pac-Man in KH3 would touch all the right fanboy and fangirl buttons for a lot of people.

Frozen

Disney Frozen Elsa

Disney Frozen Elsa

There isn’t a soul on the planet who hasn’t heard of Disney’s runaway success by now, and there is virtually zero chance that this franchise will not show up in a future Kingdom Hearts game at some point. The only question is if it will be in Kingdom Hearts 3, but it’s hard to imagine a way that Square and Disney could screw this up.

Disney recently released a new Frozen short film and also announced that Frozen 2 is on the way, so it’s not like anyone is going to forget about this franchise, no matter how long it takes Kingdom Hearts 3 to see the light of day.

All that hardcore gamers would likely ask, is that however Square Enix decides to adapt this world into Kingdom Hearts , please, for the love of all that is holy, do not make everyone listen to “Let It Go” again. Let Sora scale a grand ice castle built by Elsa. Let Goofy and Donald get up to some crazy hijinks with Olaf by their side. Just please, no more of that darn song.

Pixar

Toy Story Pixar

Toy Story Pixar

Just like with Star Wars , Disney now owns Pixar. Actually, they’ve owned them since way back in 2006. Back before Star Wars and Marvel came into the picture, a Kingdom Hearts Pixar adaption was at the top of the wish list for most fans.

The possibilities once again go on and on. Pixar’s most popular franchise of all time is arguably Toy Story , and seeing  Sora, Donald and Goofy run side by side with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the Potato Heads would bring a smile to every face, regardless of age. That said, something from Wall-E , Monsters , or even Cars could also provide a fresh new look for the franchise.

Ouya Console Review

Ouya Console Review

4
Over 60,000 interested gamers and tech enthusiasts backed Julie Uhrman and Yves Behar’s Kickstarter for the innovative Android powered Ouya console which earned over $8.5 million from crowdfunding.

console which earned over $8.5 million from crowdfunding. So when early Ouya previewsfocused on there being a lot of negatives with the hardware and its software offerings, and combined with repeated delays, there was reason to be concerned.

The Ouyaconsole hit retail this week for an affordable price of $100, but many of the backers still have yet to receive what they invested in a year and a half ago due to distribution center issues. Read our review of the console to see if the Ouya is worth the wait and the $100 price tag.

The Ouya is easy to setup and get into. For better or worse, there’s very few menu options available in the current version of its operating system, but to its credit, syncing the controller(s), accessing Wifi and getting into games is quick and efficient. Despite its compact size, the Ouya sports 1080p HD quality visuals through an HDMI port, although from its current slate of software and entertainment offerings, it’s not yet something that’s taken advantage of.

The concern for the Ouya has always been whether or not its open OS will get the needed developer support to attract a substantial user base. Ouya claims there are 16,000 registered developers – thanks to the open source nature of the platform and free developer tools – working on games and applications for the platform. At the time of launch there were 178 games and as of the time of this publication, 22 more have been added. We can count on one hand however, how many of them we’d actually return to.

While the variety of games is noteworthy, it’s important to realize that practically all of them are smartphone-type titles and ports, and play as such. The smaller, lower-priced games are noticeably less visually impressive but where Ouya lacks in triple-A, must-have games, it makes up for in the variety of experiences immediately available. There are puzzlers, platformers, music games and loads of co-op titles highlighted in the system’s store and this is what will eventually separate Ouya for the traditional “big three’ consoles from Nintendo, Sony PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox.

As for additional applications, the default software offerings currently include only a very simple browser that’s not user-friendly. As you can see from the video, the browser loads the mobile versions of sites by default and there’s no function we could find to simply scroll. The left stick and D-pad allow for skipping by link, and using the touchpad (the black center panel of the controller face) will let users double-tap and drag up, but it’s slow and not effective.

We found quite a few games that were fun to try, without having to pay any money. One of the core features of the Ouya is that every game on the market must have a free element, whether it be timed access to the game or some sort of free-to-play/freemium model. It’s a great way to explore and with many of the games not having much replay value, an hour is more than enough time.

Ouya Controller High-Res

Ouya Controller High-Res

The console can support up to four controllers for the couch multiplayer games. As you can see in the video, there’s even a section in the store that highlights titles that support couch co-op. The Ouya retail package ships with one controller and additional controllers can be purchased for a reasonable $50. As we pointed out in the video, the controller design borrows elements from the Xbox 360 layout, combined with a basic touchpad not dissimilar to the PlayStation 4, albeit not as responsive or fun to use. The controller is sufficient but is of a noticeably lower level of quality from what gamers will expect. The potentially deal-breaking gripes we encountered, although not frequently, are that some games have an unacceptable amount of lag and response time, and in terms of the hardware itself, the O-U-Y-A face buttons can and do get stuck under the removable plastic face plate.

The Specs

OUYA Console Case: Sand-Blasted Aluminum and Plastic CPU: NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-Core Memory: 1GB RAM Storage: 8GB Internal Flash Storage (Expandable via USB Port) USB: One USB 2.0 Port, One Micro USB port Connectivity: WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), Ethernet Port, and Bluetooth Output: HDMI (up to 1080p HD) Dimensions: 75mm x 75mm x 82mm (2.9in x 2.9in x 3.2in) / Weight: 300g (10.5 oz)

OUYA Wireless Controller Two analog sticks, D-Pad, eight action buttons, a system button, and touchpad Connectivity: Bluetooth Controls: 15 Buttons with Touchpad Body: Sand-Blasted Aluminum Top Plates and Plastic Dimensions: 163mm x 109mm x 53.5mm (6.4in x 4.2in x 2.1in) Weight: 275g (9.7 oz) 2x AA Batteries

The Ouya isn’t a must-buy, certainly not yet, and it doesn’t yet offer much in terms of groundbreaking games of experiences, but it is a noteworthy option for something different, something more affordable and something tech enthusiasts should explore, especially considering its developer-friendly devkit and tools. The interface, game offerings, complete lack of popular apps and lower quality controller don’t live up to the ambitious ideas behind the console’s development, but it sits with so much potential for the future. It just might be a while before the promised series of interface and application updates bring the Ouya to where we wanted it to be at launch.

Note: In the video you can see a skip option for the Credit Card screen but it’s not available. Players must input their credit card info before downloading any games as detailed on the official Ouya FAQ.

The Ouya is now available for $99.99. Additional Ouya controllers sell for $49.99

NBA 2K15’ Review

NBA 2K15’ Review

‘NBA 2K15’ Review
11
In the eyes of many basketball loving gamers, 2K Sports and the team at Visual Concepts have produced the NBA 2K series to be the reigning king of the court for years.

series to be the reigning king of the court for years. With the release of NBA 2K15 , the franchise looks to continue its dynasty run even as EA Sports’ NBA Live series attempts to mount a comeback. Armed with more than a few improvements over last year’s entry, NBA 2K15 can bear the franchise name proudly but there are also more than a few shortcomings this year that may have just opened the door just enough to get a few fans looking at the game across town.

First, the elephant standing at center court has that to be addressed is 2K’s problematic servers. Last year, server issues for 2K14 were well documented and put a blemish on that game’s launch. Sadly, little improvement seems to have been made for this year’s release. Since release day, 2K’s servers have ranged from completely down, to buggy, to laggy, to competent. This could be overlooked if not for the fact that elements of the solo play portions are tied to server performance… or lack thereof.

Performance has improved greatly over the last few weeks but is still not perfect. We’ve all too recently seen what botched game launches can do to the communities of well established franchises like Diablo and SimCity . Hopefully this is the last year the phrase “server issues at launch” has to be written in an NBA 2K review. Now if they can patch out the game’s long and frequent load times, then they’d be in business.

Pivoting over to the positives, the most notable aspects of NBA 2K15 are the continued improvements in capturing the look and feel of NBA basketball. While player models themselves aren’t vastly improved over last year, player behavior has been taken to the next level with an attention given to the details of movement, spacing, and physicality. Thanks to the 5,000-plus animations on display, the on-screen action finally has a tangible weight and realism that has to be experienced to be believed. Watching these players cut, create space or fade just before taking a jump shot is visually the best this or any NBA series has ever looked.

Another improvement over last year is the extra attention given to things on the offensive side of the ball. From a control standpoint, NBA 2K15 offers the most accessible offensive control scheme to date in terms of raw input simplicity. Everything feels sharp and deliberate with less chance for incorrect input or haphazard playmaking. Even though the game still doesn’t offer much for new players in terms of understanding the offense, the barrier of entry for controlling the basics is the lowest it’s ever been.

Unfortunately, while offense got the “keep it simple” treatment, defense was left a mess of unintuitive control schemes and convoluted button presses. And while players are trying to remember which shoulder buttons to press just to start a cut, those new and beautiful animations actually manage to work against them because making the wrong choice or hitting the wrong button results in a defender who may move get locked in an unintended animation just long enough for the offense to blow by them for an easy layup. It can happen with enough frequency that the finesse and reflexes of defensive basketball become more about playing a dull waiting game where the best anyone can do is cut off passing lanes until the AI decides to make a move on an AI teammate, thereby removing the player from the equation. Not exactly fun interaction.

Additionally, the simple act of shooting the ball has been addressed this year. Memorizing release points has been replaced with a cleanly implemented shot meter. Acting as a dynamically changing tool that takes the guess work out of not only where a player’s higher percentage shots are but also gives a visual guideline for when to release the ball, this new meter actually often felt like a blessing and a curse. It definitely makes things easier. However, it also becomes easy to get a case of tunnel vision and lock eyes on the meter rather than paying attention to the entire floor. It also seemed wildly inconsistent at times. Too often, wide open shots released right on the money rattled in and out of the iron while other contested shots released early or late would drain the bottom of the net. When it felt like it was working, it became one of the best new tools in Visual Concepts’ belt. But when it didn’t seem to want to play by its own rules, it became increaslingly frustrating to use.

Overall, the defining theme of NBA 2K15 is that this is the year Visual Concepts’ ideas outreached their ability to execute them. And because of this, the game, through its various modes and presentations, is full of some of the most exciting basketball ever offered, along with just enough failings that it’s hard to believe they exist in a franchise that usually gets just about everything right. Nothing embodies this more than MyCareer mode.

Creating a player who goes undrafted and has to fight his way into the league is absolutely a compelling new angle to play. But right from the start, the trend of things only half working becomes evident with the facial capture feature. Those who are able to actually complete the scan will be treated to The Elephant Man version of themselves created on screen. Getting into their career, players are given a ten-day contract to prove their worth to an interested team. Between-game cutscenes feature voiceovers from real NBA stars, which seems like a great idea. But the reality is that many of these “performances” are cringeworthy at best. Additionally some of these scripted events don’t seem to correlate logically to the on-court play. For example, veteran AI may admonish players for selfish play even though the previous game’s stats show anything but. The quirks go on and on, but it all boils down to 2K’s otherwise stellar level of polish being compromised by numerous areas of poor execution.

NBA 2K15 is both tough to love and hard to hate. It’s loaded with the familiar modes and content that fans have come to love, and when it’s on, it is some of the best virtual basketball anyone’s thumbs have ever been a part of. It just seems so hard to get that experience with any consistency because of all the little blemishes that are plaguing this game. Long time fans may find plenty to love here, or it may strike them as a bit of a step back in overall polish despite the on-court action being the best around. Overall, NBA 2K15 will likely go down as one of the more polarizing entries into an otherwise storied history, and possibly the one to let the Live series back into the conversation.

NBA 2K15 is available now on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The PS4 version was provided for this review.
