PlayStation Now Adds 40 More PS3 Games to the Service

Sony adds 40 more games to its PlayStation Now service, including well-known titles like Killzone 2, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and God of War: Chains of Olympus.

Even though PlayStation 4 doesn’t currently offer the same method of backward compatibility now available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 owners can still play some of their favorite PlayStation 3 games through Sony’s PlayStation Now service. And according to a blog post from Sony, the service now offers 40 new games.

Additionally, Sony has discounted the 12-month package to $99.99, which Sony says gives customers a 55 percent savings over the normal monthly cost. Those interested in taking advantage of the deal will need to act quickly, since the offer expires January 11th.

Now that Xbox is ramping up its backward compatibility efforts by announcing new additions to the service every month, Sony has some catching up to do. And considering the fact that Xbox One’s backward compatibility serviceis free for all Xbox One owners, PlayStation really needs to step up its game if it wants to convince players to shell out the monthly or yearly cost of playing the game.

We’ll note that although PlayStation Now users need to pay a subscription or limited-time rental fee to play the games in the PlayStation Now library, there is no additional cost per game. Xbox One’s backward compatibility, on the other hand, gives free access to select Xbox 360 games, but only if the Xbox One players own the game.

Thanks to this influx of 40 games, PlayStation Now is likely a more compelling service for PlayStation 4 owners, especially with the addition of popular games. Even though the service now has over 400 games available, only a few of the games have been major titles with positive reviews. Granted, not all of the games included in the new batch are the most highly favored PlayStation 3 games, but the list does include a handful of favorites. Considering PlayStation continues to add new games to the service on a regular basis, it likely won’t be too long before PlayStation fans see another round of titles added to the growing list.

What do you think about the list of new games added to PlayStation Now? Is it enough to justify the cost of playing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
