E3 2015: ‘Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void’ Gets Free Prologue Campaign

With E3 2015 hosting their first ever PC Gaming Show, many had predicted there would be no shortage of PC-based gaming news – and so far, the conference has delivered on this idea in abundance.

Blizzard was present at the aforementioned PC Gaming Show to reveal that Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void would be getting a free prologue campaign pack, which will introduce players to the introductory plot of the third and final expansion. The prologue will be made available to everyone with a Blizzard account, regardless of if they’ve purchased any previoustitles.

Entitled Whispers of Oblivion, the mini-campaign will take players across a total of three separate missions called Dark Whispers, Evil Awakens, and Ghosts in the Fog. The story will help bridge the gap between the events ofand, with the final mission leading right in to the beginning of the third expansion pack.

Those who pre-order Legacy of the Void will receive early beta access for the Whispers of Oblivion campaign, which will then release publicly for everyone else after the beta period closes. It’s a nice bonus for fans of the series, and when it launches publicly it’s another good chance for those who haven’t played a Starcraft title to give the series a belated chance. Unfortunately, Blizzard didn’t offer any specific release date for the free content.

The prologue shows off an all-new dark protoss skin, with a sleek black metallic look replacing the classic golden hues of traditional protoss armies. The trailer also shows more of the fight between Artanis and Zeratul, and also confirms players will run into both Kerrigan and Raynor during new prologue cutscenes.

During the PC Gaming Conference, it was revealed that Whispers of Oblivion would more-or-less tell the full story of Zeratul, a character who has only featured in cutscenes since the zerg-centric Heart of the Swarm . Within the prologue, the dark templar will be closing in on unlocking the last mysteries of the Xel’naga, and will assuredly continue to have many conflicts with his firstborn brethren.

The idea of releasing a free batch of missions makes one wonder if Blizzard is testing the waters to see if fans would be interested in such a platform in the future. If fans express enough interest in the downloadable content, we may see future packs released to help expand the game’s shelf life as a relevant title.

Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void currently has no release date, but gamers who pre-order it can access the Whispers of Oblivion beta this July.
