Today Activision announced via press release that the Call of Duty franchise has officially sold over 20 million map packs.
franchise has officially sold over 20 million map packs. Most recently the Resurgence Packwas let loose upon the war ravaged multiplayer of Modern Warfare 2 for the 360, PS3 and PC.
“[Activision Blizzard] today announced that during the quarter ended June 30, 2010, life-to-date map packs for the Call of Duty® franchise surpassed 20 million units. Call of Duty remains the #1 best-selling first-person action franchise in the U.S. and Europe, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and GfK, and has consistently raised the bar for the video game industry with its innovative and engaging online multiplayer experiences and downloadable content offerings.”
Despite some rather harsh negative feedback from the gaming community, Activision is still making money by the truck load and they won’t be slowing down any time soon. MW2 has stayed on top of the Xbox LIVE and PSN charts almost every single week since its release back in November of 2009. Along with CoD ‘s online dominance,is priming to be one of the biggest releases of the holiday season, with the possibility of two special edition packagesfor gamers to shell out even more cash on.
What Activision is clearly trying, and succeeding, to get across here is that they have not stopped making money and their franchises are still some of the best selling in the industry. Heck, the only other time you see numbers like this is when they involve Apple products. We are not likely to see a lull in the complete takeover of the FPS by Call of Duty any time soon.
Call of Duty: Black Ops drops on November 9th, 2010 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC.
