‘Mortal Kombat X’ Tournament Pits Elders Against Elders

Watching a pair of truly skilled fighting game players duke it out is a sight to behold, and professional bouts of Mortal Kombat X are no exception.
are no exception. The Mortal Kombat series has been a mainstay at major fighting game tournamentsfor a long time, and top-tier competitors’ skills are mind-boggling.
Of course, watching people attempt to fumble through a game’s controls – and fail miserably – is also pretty fun. Combine that with how disgusted some elders get while watching Mortal Kombat X , and laughter is sure to follow.
As part of its ‘Elders React’ series, the React YouTube channel held an 8-person Mortal Kombat X tournament. While some of the elders had typical reactions to the game, complaining about the gore, violence, and kids these days, others were surprisingly eager to give it a try.
The elder tournament plays out much like one might expect, with a lot of fumbling and awkwardness. However, some of the competitors eventually get the hang of things, and start using more complex maneuvers than the game’s basic kicks and punches. The best part of the tournament, however, is how all of the elders end up enjoying their experience, smack talking, laughing, and cheering their Mortal Kombat X characterson by name.
While the elders never get a handle on Mortal Kombat X’s fatalities, it’s clear that they’re learning how to execute the special moves that they initially perform by accident. That’s probably not what the U.S. Department of Education had in mind when it said that games make great learning tools, but it’s a good example as to how video games provide the excitement and positive, immediate feedback that makes mastering new skills more fun.
In any case, the elders’ reactions to their matches are hilarious and adorable, and it’s nice to see most of them – especially the finalists – enjoy the game more than they expected to. Some gamers are lucky enough to grow up with parents and grandparents who partake in video games with their families, even if they don’t know what they’re doing. However, there are probably very few who can claim that their grandparents would enjoy a gory Mortal Kombat match, let alone cheer and laugh throughout the experience.
If you think the idea of elders playing games is ridiculous, just remember: someday, young gamers will be old, too. And hopefully, we’ll still be gaming, whooping, and embarrassing our descendants with awesome fatalities.
