Sony Files Trademark for ‘Days Gone’, a Game With Online Features

Sony files a trademark for a game with online components called ‘ Days Gone ‘, with many fans believing that it’s Sony Bend’s ambitious, unannounced PS4 title.

Just one week ago, Sony’s Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida boasted that the PlayStation 4 would have an “unprecedented rush” of games in 2016. Not only would highly anticipated blockbusters like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Last Guardian finally be making it into the hands of waiting PS4 players after multiple delays, but there are also new IPs such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Detroit: Become Human . And that’s not to forget the ‘early 2016’ launch of Sony’s virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR. So from the look of all that, anyone would think that Sony has its hands full.

That doesn’t appear to be the case, however, as the company still has plenty of unannounced tricks up its sleeves; that much has been made clear by a recent United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) filing. While everyone was still feasting on turkey leftovers, on December 28, 2015 Sony filed a mysterious trademark for something called ‘ Days Gone ‘.

While the listing has now been removed, it originally listed Days Gone under Class 9 (game software) and Class 41 (online game software). That Class 41 categorization doesn’t necessarily mean that Days Gone is an ambitious MMO, though, but it may have an online component such as a leaderboard.

Unfortunately, the listing offers very little to go on but early speculation from fans is that Days Gone somehow relates to Sony Bend’s in-development title. Last year, Yoshida described the project as “awesome cool”and Sony Bend began hiring developers who would help them “push the PS4 somewhere it’s never been before”. It has also been suggested that the game is an open-world horror game, something which could feasibly include online gameplay features.

Moreover, an insider revealed that the Sony Bend team is almost done with the game and that it would be revealed soon. Sadly the game missed Paris Games Week but the decision to trademark Days Gone could suggest that Sony is getting its papers in order ahead of the formal unveiling.

Another (rather hopeful) suggestion is that Days Gone is somehow related to The Last Of Us 2 . Nolan North did reveal that Naughty Dog is working on a TLOU follow upand Naughty Dog did develop Uncharted 3 and TLOU in tandem, though with Uncharted 4 being delayed it does seem unlikely that the developer is close enough to completing TLOU 2 that Sony would need to file for a trademark. Even more of a longshot still is that Days Gone somehow relates to the Hideo Kojima’s upcoming PC and PS4 title, though with the developer still looking for additional team members, again, it seems unlikely that they’d need to lock down a name so soon.
