Naughty Dog reveals the first multiplayer specific trailer for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which shows off new mechanics and features including AI assist characters and power ups.
During the Paris Games Week event, Sony gave a first look at footage for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End ‘s multiplayer mode, which was revealed to have been developed by team behind The Last of Us. While the trailer didn’t feature actual gameplay, the video did appear to be shot entirely in-engine and looks to continue the classic trend of pitting heroes versus villains. Map traversal remains a key element as well, with the trailer showing players quickly moving around the environment, ducking behind cover, and running through some high action moments.
While the gameplay will look familiar to those who have played the previous games, Naughty Dog is adding a number of twists and new mechanics this time around for. They include: Sidekicks represent the first big addition allowing players to call in one of four NPC assist character to help when faced with tough odds. These AI controlled buddies each come with unique abilities and skill sets and if used properly can turn the tide of a match. Mysticals are items which grant players supernatural abilities inspired from past games. The trailer does reveal a couple of mysticals such as a fire item which grants the user super speed and encases them in fire, abilities seen by the Djinn from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and also what looks to be the El Dorado sarcophagus from the very first game. The traversal system has also received a number of enhancements including the ability for characters to better free run around and over objects. The new grappling hook can be used not only for getting around, but for performing aerial take downs.
The trailer reveals a number of playable characters, like Nathan Drake, Victor Sullivan, Elena Fisher, and Sam Drake, along with previously unannounced characters from past games including Chloe Frazer, Katherine Marlowe, and Zoran Lazarević. Naughty Dog isn’t saying if any of these characters will factor into the story, so for now, fans should expect this roster to extend to multiplayer only.
