Xbox Head Talks Console Wars, Keeping Positive Attitude

When it comes to video game consoles, gamers can be fiercely loyal, even to the point of arguing and fighting with those who prefer a different platform than them.

than them. And ever since Sony and Microsoft launched their latest console iterations in 2013, it seems the feud has only become more intense.

However, there’s one person who remains firm in his convictions of positivityand support for all game consoles, including his competitors. It won’t come as a surprise to many gamers that this person is none other than Xbox boss, Phil Spencer, who’s been known to congratulate Sonyon their successes, including the recent PlayStation-exclusive.

In an interview with Gamespot, Spencer expressed his disgust with those who try to dig a chasm between consoles and push gamers to love one and hate the other. According to Spencer:

“I’ve said before, the one thing that I probably find a little distasteful in the discourse around games is the divisiveness that people try to build between platforms. It becomes more about what piece of plastic I own than what games I’m playing… [or] about somebody else failing than the things I love succeeding. I don’t think that’s a good place for our industry.”

Spencer’s convictions on the matter were so strong during the interview, that we were almost expecting him to drop a #AllConsolesMatter hashtag. Sadly that didn’t happen, but luckily we’re here to help him out.

Speaking further on the console war situation, Spencer mentioned he would much rather focus on what Xbox is doing well than try to put down PlayStation for succeeding in their sphere. For Spencer, it’s all about his own opportunities, and not diminishing the positive aspects of other consoles:

“We see opportunity to delight customers, to give them more reasons to engage with the platform that we have, and it’s really all about the unrealized opportunity that’s in front of us.

“Then when people bring up, ‘Well, what about Nintendo? What about Sony? Isn’t it too bad that Sony is selling a lot of PlayStation 4s right now?’ I honestly don’t feel that it’s too bad.”

Naturally, Spencer understands that not every gamer is so vehemently one way or the other, and that it’s really only small pockets of vitriol that make the biggest stink, but that doesn’t mean he can’t fight against the negativity. In fact, it sounds more like Spencer is seeking to bring together those who are more partisan in their approach to gaming consoles, and wants to encourage them to speak up, to be excited for all consoles and games and the great things happening in the industry.

In the end, there will always be those who feel strongly that their console or game is better than that of a friend or stranger, but hopefully gamers can change the dialogue to be more supportive and uplifting, rather than pessimistic and combative.

What do you think about Spencer’s thoughts on console wars? Do you agree, or would you rather see gamers fight it out? Let us know your perspective in the comments.
