After showing off a lot of pre-rendered and pre-alpha footage last year at E3 , EA came out swinging this year showing off a number of major titles like Mass Effect Andromeda and Mirror’s Edge Catalyst to name a few.
To make sure everything fit, EA had to push the show beyond its normal one hour timeframe in order to fit everything in. While everyone wanted to get a look at the heavy hitters such as Star Wars Battlefront , fans were delighted to learn that Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is on the way.
After initially revealing the titleduring Microsoft’s E3 press conference earlier in the day, EA brought out the first ever Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 gameplay footage, showing off more than five minutes of plant on zombie action. While the core theme of the game remains true, utilizing both humor and lots of color for this third person shooter, the story has changed a bit with the Zombies finding themselves victorious and turning the former human city of Suburbia into the aptly named Zomburbia. This time around it’s up to the plants to take back their land and drive the zombies out once and for all.
EA has promised even more classes for this sequel including an undead pirate named Captain Deadbeard, Super Brainz who comes off as a zombified Superman type of character and a zombie imp which can call in a mech suit ala another EA published game in Titanfall . For the plants, there’s a time travelling mystic named Rose, a massive orange named Citron, and Kernel Corn acting as an assault type of character.
During the event, EA showed off Graveyard Ops, a 4 player co-op mode which acts as a sort of Horde style game where the zombies have to defend against waves of plants. The match was played on the Zomboss Factory, one of 12 maps promised to ship with the game.
Popcap is also thanking players who have battled in the first installment by importing any unlocked characters from the first game into this new entry. In keeping with tradition, Popcap has also promised free DLC content to help support the game post launch.
Garden Warfare was a wonderful surprise when it first launched, taking the lighthearted humor from the tower defense series and managing to convert that into a well made shooter. Popcap seems to be taking the ideas in the first game and pushing them to their limits for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 by adding new characters, more maps, and a sought after single player campaign mode which will be shown off at a later date.
Considering how much unlockable contentthe first game came packed with, there’s reason to believe players will have a lot more to look forward to once this hits next year. Expect to see a lot more on this title in the coming months.
What do you guys think of the first gameplay footage? Planning on jumping back into this quirky shooter?
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is scheduled for release sometime in the Spring of 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
