Markus ‘Notch’ Persson’s crafting, survival game has come a long way since its alpha release back in 2009. The Minecraft craze swept the gaming community after the official worldwide release in 2011 and has spawned an Xbox Live Arcade port, mobile versions, t-shirts, and more. This week, the superstar indie game hit yet another major milestone.
The official PC sales counter on the Minecraft website has ticked over the 12 million copies sold point. Just a few months ago, PC sales crossed over 11 million units moved. The additional million copies of the PC version purchased by gamers brings the cross-platform sales total up to 33 million. Not too shabby, huh?
The Xbox 360 version of Minecraft helped the title reach that 33 million copies milestone by accounting for at least 8 million sales, according to last month’s totals. Recent announcements suggest that sales won’t slow down any time soon. Microsoft plans to offer fans another chance to get in on the Minecraft action with the release of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition . The upcoming next-gen game is currently in development.
No need to worry about Sony fans either, they’ll have the chance to make some purchases of their own when the game is released as a PS4 launch title and makes its way to the PS3 and Vita, as well. Rumors of an eventual Sony release became more and more popular after Notch vocally expressed his frustration with Microsoft – with regard to Windows 8. Related to operating system frustrations, or not, the Sony port is now official.
Nintendo fans will have to continue to feel like their invitations to the party got lost in the mail. Back in March, lead developer Jens “Jeb” Bergensten explained that a Wii U port for Minecraft was not likely.
“Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles. When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.”
As sales and platform availability continue to grow for the crafting game, the potential for more crossovers like the recently announced Mass Effect mash-upseem to be limitless. It’s likely that Minecraft will continue to bring in the cash with additional releases and DLC packs for quite some time.
Minecraft is currently available on Mac, PC, and Xbox 360. Future releases on PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One have all been confirmed.
