2016 keeps the ridiculous feats of video gaming prowess coming as one Legend of Zelda fan decides to give ocarinas a chance outside of the world of Hyrule.
It’s already been an incredible year for memorable video game moments, particularly inside the Legend of Zelda fan community. It was only a few weeks ago that a blind gamer beatin its entirety, and now another player has joined the long list of streamers and speedrunners who have added their own unique twist to the classic Nintendo offering. Streamer MonotoneTim managed to format an actual ocarina as a video game controller, creating what might be the most difficult controller twist on a video game yet.
After all, while beating the Dark Souls games while using a Rock Band guitaris one thing, effectively playing an adventure game like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by using a finite resource like the oxygen in a player’s lungs is entirely another. The concept behind MonotoneTim’s ocarina controller is similar to those gamers who have used pianos or the aforementioned controller-guitar hybrid before, but an ocarina doesn’t register button presses. Instead, a player needs to use their breath and control their pitch in order to input commands properly.
While watching talented gamers play old school Legend of Zelda games is entertaining, fans of the series are still waiting on more news about the future of Link. Nintendo recently hinted that gamers might see more of Linkle in future Legend of Zelda titles, but beyond that, things have been relatively quiet as of late.
For some games, that kind of quiet approach might be fine, but the next adventure for Link is one of 2016’s most anticipated video gamesand players have been eager to discover more about what producer Eiji Aonuma calls “the ultimate and most complete Zelda game”. Unfortunately, that news has not been forthcoming, although at least gamers like MonotoneTim have given the community something fun to watch in the meantime.
What’s your favorite Legend of Zelda speedrunning or streaming feat thus far? Is MonotoneTim’s one of the best of all time? Let us know in the comments below.
