Watch Legend of Zelda Played Using a Real Ocarina

194
2016 keeps the ridiculous feats of video gaming prowess coming as one Legend of Zelda fan decides to give ocarinas a chance outside of the world of Hyrule.

It’s already been an incredible year for memorable video game moments, particularly inside the Legend of Zelda fan community. It was only a few weeks ago that a blind gamer beatin its entirety, and now another player has joined the long list of streamers and speedrunners who have added their own unique twist to the classic Nintendo offering. Streamer MonotoneTim managed to format an actual ocarina as a video game controller, creating what might be the most difficult controller twist on a video game yet.

After all, while beating the Dark Souls games while using a Rock Band guitaris one thing, effectively playing an adventure game like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by using a finite resource like the oxygen in a player’s lungs is entirely another. The concept behind MonotoneTim’s ocarina controller is similar to those gamers who have used pianos or the aforementioned controller-guitar hybrid before, but an ocarina doesn’t register button presses. Instead, a player needs to use their breath and control their pitch in order to input commands properly.

While watching talented gamers play old school Legend of Zelda games is entertaining, fans of the series are still waiting on more news about the future of Link. Nintendo recently hinted that gamers might see more of Linkle in future Legend of Zelda titles, but beyond that, things have been relatively quiet as of late.

For some games, that kind of quiet approach might be fine, but the next adventure for Link is one of 2016’s most anticipated video gamesand players have been eager to discover more about what producer Eiji Aonuma calls “the ultimate and most complete Zelda game”. Unfortunately, that news has not been forthcoming, although at least gamers like MonotoneTim have given the community something fun to watch in the meantime.

What’s your favorite Legend of Zelda speedrunning or streaming feat thus far? Is MonotoneTim’s one of the best of all time? Let us know in the comments below.

Director of Ubisoft’s The Division Leaves For Square Enix

Director of Ubisoft’s The Division Leaves For Square Enix

The Division has been buzzing in the news for a few weeks – not only is it the fastest selling game in Ubisoft history , server maintenance was necessary after players blocked doors and crucial NPCs , and a player finally reached the game’s level cap after grinding for 130 hours.

Director of Ubisoft’s The Division Leaves For Square Enix

after grinding for 130 hours. Amongst all this success, however, the game has been marked by a major departure – game director Ryan Barnard has left Ubisoft for Square Enix.

According to his LinkedIn page, Barnard departed sometime in February of this year, after over 4 years with Massive Entertainment, an Ubisoft studio. He now holds the position of gameplay director at IO Interactive, the studio behind Hitman .

Barnard’s role in this newly created position, according to a post on IO’s website, will put him in charge of “three core teams – gameplay, online, and world – which will be no small task.”

The newest entry in the Hitman franchise, simply titled Hitman , is an episodic game– the first episode was released March 11th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Facebook will soon launch new universal apps for not only its core service, but also Instagram, and Messenger. In addition, the social networking company is extending its Facebook Audience Network and App Install SDK to developers on the Windows platform.

On stage at the Build developer conference, Microsoft executive vice president for Windows and Devices group Terry Myerson announced the latest Facebook news as he touted the growing adoption of the Windows app store and ecosystem. He revealed that there has been more than 5 billion visits to the Windows Store.

By releasing apps for the Windows platform, Facebook is ensuring that its social network, photo-sharing app, and messaging service are more broadly available regardless of what device you’re using, be it smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Reports of a Windows 10 version of Facebook Messenger popped up in the Microsoft Store earlier this month, but the only details that were apparent is that you could download it “soon.”

For developers, being able to tap into Facebook across all platforms can be invaluable. Thus perhaps the reason why Facebook is extending its Audience Network and mobile app install SDK, It will not only give developers more ways to monetize their apps, but give millions of Facebook advertisers greater reach, especially when you factor out the devices someone is using.

Facebook’s Audience Network debuted at the company’s own F8 developer conferencein 2014. It’s a mobile ad network that lets advertisers bid and manage their marketing to a targeted group. You can choose to have a banner ad, interstitial, native, link ads, and even app install ads.

We’ve reached out to Facebook for additional comment and will update if we hear back.

Why I Love Animal Crossing

Why I Love Animal Crossing

The Art of Relaxation
Have a long day at work?

Have a long day at work? Need to relax? There is no greater accomplice that will free some anxiety like playing Animal Crossing does. Animal Crossing has the ability to make simple gameplay mechanics have a huge pay-off in amusement and replay value. Whether it is cleaning up your town, buying new merchandise, or fishing, Animal Crossing has a convivial spunk that makes responsibility all the more fun in its small digital universe. How else can I put this? Animal Crossing makes obligations not only fun, but completely addicting. Its everlasting world of charming characters and soothing music wraps around your heart, squeezes tight, and never lets go.

Plays When You\’re Away

One thing that I find particularly awesome is that the world and characters in your game are living, even when you\’re away. Time never stops, seasons will pass, and animals will come and go, all in your absence. Your town will begin to show that it hasn\’t been kept up over time. It\’s a brilliant idea from Nintendo that always entices players to come back. Not only that, but the newest iteration in the series, Animal Crossing: New Leaf , is constantly being updated with new merchandise and goodies to find. This mechanic is what ultimately deviates the Animal Crossing series from other life sim games. Well, that, and the fact you\’re living with talking animals in clothes!

Better With Friends

Playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf with friends adds so much to the experience with the game. Chatting about the trophies you have earned, the secret items you\’ve collected, or the wacky things you\’re towns-animals say, it\’s all completely chaotic and bubbly cute. You can visit your friend\’s town and go swimming, catch bugs, and even play wacky mini-games on Tortimer Island. Every player has a unique town and unique animals; therefore, everyone\’s experience with the game is unique.

A new feature introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf is the Happy Home Showcase. It allows you to StreetPass with any nearby gamers who also have New Leaf. After connecting with one another, you are then eligible to visit their home in the Showcase area and you can even purchase select items from each room. You never know what you\’ll find in someone\’s home — things can very from brilliant to creepy. The Happy Home Showcase is an excellent addition to the series and I can\’t imagine the next installment without it.

Creativity is Key

Arguably, the most important part of Animal Crossing is building, decorating, and making your home into everything that screams you . Set up a game room in the basement.  Create an art museum. Have your own music studio. It\’s a plethora of creation tools all in the palm of your hand, literally! The Animal Crossing franchise teaches gamers discipline, creativity, and most importantly, how to have a good time.

I have stressed my love for the Animal Crossing series to you, now I want to know what you think. Do you spend countless hours pulling weeds and buying turnips? Or is the cutesy animal-befriending life just not your thing?

The company said that initial launch partners include Home Depot, Food.com, Style Me Pretty, ELLE, Marie Claire, Brit & Co., Sunset, and Delish.

This new pin type is now available to those in the U.S., France, U.K., and Germany. Content from the How-To Pins will be available on Pinterest’s Android app and on the Web. Support for iOS will be coming in “a future release.”

A part of Pinterest’s suite of Rich Pins, which launched in 2013, How-To Pins are another way for companies to add diverse information right onto the relevant pin. It joins existing types such as app, movie, recipe, article, product, and place — think of it as a customized template that varies depending on the user’s objective and what a brand is interested in sharing.

Pinterest is focusing on specific verticals for the How-To Pins, namely do-it-yourself (DIY) and crafts, health and fitness, food and drink recipes, and hair and beauty. These areas aren’t surprising, as they’re the ones most likely to be where people want step-by-step help on how to do the activity or create the product. The company said there are more than 4 billion recipe pins, 1 billion hair and beauty pins, 4 billion DIY pins, and 500 million health and fitness pins on the site now. For brands that want to stand out among the noise, the How-To Pin could be a useful tool.

Once considered to be mainly a next-generation scrapbook, Pinterest has evolved to become a visual search engine to inspire people to do something. Because it features more than 50 billion ideas in its system, users need a way to filter out the noise; Pinterest wants brands to use Rich Pins to stand out. Although those businesses can advertise on the site, the service needs more tools around organic search that focus on giving relevant content to the user. Pinterest, after all, wants its users to take the inspiration they find and make it into a reality.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is Gorgeous in Unreal Engine Remake

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is Gorgeous in Unreal Engine Remake

1,210
Popular creator and YouTuber CryZENx recreates the Temple of Time from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by utilizing the power of Unreal Engine 4.

About four months ago, a dedicated fan of The Legend of Zelda revealed to the world what one of the most treasured games in the series, Ocarina of Time , would look like using Unreal Engine 4. Now a different fan has taken that vision a step further, releasing a playable demo of an Unreal Engine 4-powered HD version of.

Creator CryZENx’s free download allows players to explore the Temple of Time in gorgeous HD visuals for the first time ever. The animations and art style are retained from the original Nintendo 64 entry, but CryZENx has created fresh code to go along with his stunning recreation of the Temple of Time.

The demo, which can be seen in action in the video below, is truly impressive. It’s clear that CryZENx dedicated a ton of time to recreating it, and hopefully hardcore Zelda fans will get the chance to play it before Nintendo catches wind and potentially shuts it down. Those that want to experience a snippet of Ocarina of Time in HD can click here.

So far, it looks as though Epic’s decision to make Unreal Engine 4 freeto the public has been a good move. It has resulted in numerous creative ventures of gaming fans recreating their favorite games using the engine, which in turn has earned plenty of good press for the tech, making it an even more popular tool than ever before. Just yesterday a Metal Gear Solid Unreal Engine 4 remakesurfaced, and of course, the creator of this Ocarina of Time UE4 demo, CryZENx, has released his fair share of content as well.

Thanks to CryZENx, we’ve seen plenty of other examples of what certain Nintendo properties would look like powered by Unreal Engine 4. He has also created a Pokemon Unreal Engine 4 demoas well as a Kirby Unreal Engine 4 demo, so it will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

CryZENx appears to have an affinity for Nintendo franchises, so it would make sense that his next project will also be Nintendo-related. Perhaps he will work on recreating some of the iconic levels from Super Mario 64 in Unreal Engine 4, or maybe he will follow up on Jude Wilson’s work with the UE4 version of GoldenEye 007 .

Whatever CryZENx decides to create next, his work goes a long way in showing just how powerful Unreal Engine 4 can be in the right hands. Maybe the positive public reception to his work will convince Nintendo to create some official Nintendo games using the engine, but we’ll have to take a “wait and see” approach on that front.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available for Nintendo 64, and the official remake is available for Nintendo 3DS.

Fifteen Minute Premiere of Hitman Gameplay

Fifteen Minute Premiere of Hitman Gameplay

Teased by Square Enix at E3 2015 with an aesthetically pleasing announcement trailer was the upcoming installment of the Hitman franchise, confusingly titled HITMAN .

Fifteen Minute Premiere of Hitman Gameplay

Also relevant is the recent–and second–attempt to bring Hitman to theaters with the debut of Hitman: Agent 47, which showed a lot of promise for fans of the series but didn’t do as well as expected in the box offices. Released to the public to see this past Friday was a video containing fifteen solid minutes of gameplay that was shown to attendees of Gamescom earlier this month. Now that the world has seen it, excitement is brewing among fans.

The series began way back in 2000 with Danish developer Io Interactive’s first Hitman game, Hitman: Codename 47 , published by Eidos Interactive. Io and Eidos would continue to publish three more Hitman games together through 2006. Besides a three pack game containing three of the first four Hitman games, the series wouldn’t see another installment until Hitman: Absolution ‘s release in 2012 under a new publisher, Square Enix. Fast forward to the present where we have the upcoming HITMAN set to be the second Hitman game published by Square Enix.

Each Hitman game is an exercise in stealth and customization in regards to tactics and strategy. The games are divided into missions, each with different settings, which are large open sandboxes in and of themselves. Each mission has a set of required and optional objectives that the player must complete. How to get these objectives accomplished is not given, and leaves open the opportunity for the player to make the most interesting decisions the game will pit you with. As demonstrated in the demonstration, players can simply put a bullet in the target, or be more subtle or obnoxious about their approach and drop a giant light fixture on his head. These sorts of decisions are what the series is famous for.

Today, to prep fans for the coming few weeks, publisher Square Enix alongside devs at IO Interactive released a trailer they are calling “Season Premiere.”
Starting March 11th, fans will be able to play the first installment in the episodic HITMAN series on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

The above trailer uses the song “Men Today” by HEALTH.
It also gives fans a sneak peak at the Prologue and Paris locations we can look forward to in the first episode, along with a glimpse at the Italian coastal town of Sapienza that will be out next month in April, and a look at a couple areas in the Moroccan city of Marrakech we can expect in May.

Nintendofying Third-Party IPs

Nintendofying Third-Party IPs

Nintendo has the most iconic game franchises of all time, thanks to Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and many more.

and many more. However, there is some third-party franchises that I think would work wonders as part of Nintendo\’s legacy. Here is a list of games and game series that I think Nintendo could do astounding things with. Some are plausible while others are downright bonkers.

Sonic the Hedgehog

In recent years, Nintendo and Sega have had a pretty close relationship. They set off a new series back in 2007 with Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games ; since then, there have been many exclusive Sonic games to hit Nintendo platforms. They also went as far to add Zelda- themed levels in the latest Sonic Lost World . I think it would make perfect sense if Nintendo were to acquire the rights to Sonic the Hedgehog . Though the franchise’s fan-base has dwindled away over the years, the series still has a huge following, many of whom would surely take the plunge to buy a Wii U to get their hands on every new Sonic game, if they hadn\’t already. Sonic the Hedgehog is a classic series, once being a huge competitor of Nintendo’s and now being a trusty asset. There is no bounds to what the blue blur is capable of — now it’s up to Nintendo to take this idea and ‘run’ with it.

Minecraft

Sometimes, when I look at Minecraft , I\’m astounded that this game isn\’t on Nintendo\’s platforms — everything about it reminds me of a Nintendo game. The friendly corkiness of its gameplay, the repelling, but lovable art direction, the heartstrings it tugs to bring out your nostalgic side — it\’s uncanny! The Minecraft phenomenon sadly hasn\’t made its way to Nintendo\’s Wii U yet and most likely never will, due to Microsoft’s recent purchase of developer Mojang, the creators behind Minecraft . But ‘if’ Nintendo were to own the IP, things could only get better. The big N can undeniably cater to casual and core gamers, just as Minecraft does. It almost goes without saying that the Wii U\’s GamePad would be the perfect companion with a game that uses so much customization and menu screens.

Bayonetta

Nintendo currently has the rights to Bayonetta 2 , given that they are the publisher of the title, but why stop there? This is already a franchise that many gamers hold near and dear to their hearts. It\’s also a Triple A series that, if marketed correctly, can turn a lot of heads! Bayonetta is also more on the mature frontthat we don\’t see as much from Nintendo-published games. The Bayonetta series is fast, unrelenting, and completely chaotic, and Nintendo is a company with the willingness and manpower to propel the series forward.

LitteBigPlanet

I know what you\’re thinking: a PlayStation exclusive on a Nintendo platform? Yes! Well, sort of. The LittleBigPlanet series has a huge assortment of themes and pop culture customization. From Marvel and DC to Metal Gear Solid and Pirates of the Caribbean , the sheer amount of content is neverending. However, there is no theme that would be as crazy and mind-numbingly fun as a Nintendo one! Imagine creating your own worlds full of The Legend of Zelda enemies and Tom Nook impersonators or recreating the first level in the original Donkey Kong . The ideas could surely go on and on, and though this will never happen, it\’s good to think outside of the realm of possibilities sometimes.

Mega Man

It\’s no secret that Nintendo is doing Mega Man great justice in Super Smash Bros.for Wii U & 3DS . More justice than the developer Capcom has recently attempted, anyway. Everyone knows Nintendo can make a solid platformer — hell, they have made some of the best of all time! Capcom and Nintendo have a long history with one another. They have even worked together developing not one, but four, Legend of Zelda games! ( Oracle of Seasons, Oracles of Ages, Four Swords, Minish Cap ). Nintendo consoles were the original home for the blue bomber and I think it\’s time he comes back. Mega Man has brought pure enjoyment to gamers throughout its long history and, if Nintendo and Capcom were to bring back this classic gem with full force, there\’s no telling the heights that Mega Man could reach once again.

Do you agree with my choices? What franchises do you think Nintendo could steer in the right direction?

Nintendo Patents Camera and Projector Device

Nintendo Patents Camera and Projector Device

140
A patent filed by Nintendo in 2014 is now open to the public, revealing an intriguing camera and projector device that may have ties to the Nintendo NX console.

Two years ago, Nintendo filed a patent for a device capable of scanning multiple objects via a camera and mirror device, which could output images via a light-source projector. The patent wasn’t available to the public until yesterday, but it didn’t take long for technical Nintendofans to begin parsing the patent files in attempt to find out what the device could possibly be used for.

The patent was filed by none other than Fumihiko Inoue, who is an employee of Nintendo’s Development Engineering Department. He currently has three patents with the company, and was heavily involved in the circuit design of the Nintendo 3DS. It goes without saying that Inoeu is an engineer who knows his stuff, and evidently has experience putting his patents into practice.

Like most patents, the documents weren’t made with ease-of-reading in mind. The full title of the patent is called “Information processing system, information processing program, information processing method and imaging device”, which is a very long way of stating that the device is able to detect surroundings, accept inputs, and project an output based on the input. Some have guessed that this may be a peripheral that can scan multiple Amiibo at the same time, but so far Nintendo has remained silent in regards to the speculation.

The device is also capable of wireless transmission with a computer, which makes it quite the versatile information processing system.

While the device certainly looks somewhat similar to the NFC reader of the Nintendo 3DS, the patent item uses a camera to photograph and detect the area around it (somewhat like Microsoft’s Kinect sensor), although it also has the aforementioned light-source projector. As the above figure shows, the device isn’t very large in size, with the camera lens area only capable of detecting a portion of a human finger up close.

Since the patent was filed long after the Nintendo Wii U was already launched, many are speculating this patent is related to the rumor-besieged Nintendo NX, which may be launching later this year. So far, most of the rumors have been pure speculation and hearsay, but the evidence of Inoeu’s patents grants a lot more credibility than even the most impressive Photoshop job. Using a projector in the newest console would certainly make the console stand out from the crowd, though not every gamer would want to sacrifice crisp HD visuals for the sake of a bigger projection.

We’ll keep you posted if more news regarding the patent surfaces.

What do you think about the patent, Ranters?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Beat With Dance Dance Revolution Pad

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Beat With Dance Dance Revolution Pad

In order to breathe new life into older titles, a lot of gamers set outlandish challenges for themselves when they revisit video games of the past.

In order to breathe new life into older titles, a lot of gamers set outlandish challenges for themselves when they revisit video games of the past. For instance, a few years ago a Japanese fan completed the incredibly difficult Dark Souls in just under an hour and a half. Not to mention, a couple of months back, we saw one player take on Nintendo 64’s undeniable classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in order to set a new world record speedrunin 17 minutes and 47 seconds by taking advantage of a series of in-game glitches.

Feats of speed aside, there have also been some gamers who try to add another wrinkle of difficulty beyond actual gameplay by using hardware that is unintended for certain releases. In this case, a video maker who goes by the hilarious handle “ATwerkinYoshi” has spent the last few months recording footage of himself playing through The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on a DDR pad, which has now led him to defeat the game’s nefarious boss, Ganon.

As the clip above elaborates, the arrows on the dance pad correspond with movement – the up arrow is forward, the down arrow is back, and so forth. However, oddly, the right arrow is the B button for slash attacks, with the circle space being reserved for right movements. Without a doubt, this had to have been an arduous task, especially since there aren’t even enough icons on the DDR pad to compensate for all of the Nintendo 64 controller‘s buttons. In fact, the video’s narrator goes on to explain that in order to make up for most of the actions, he holds a controller to use the C buttons.

Gamer Uses DDR Pad to Beat Ocarina of Time

Gamer Uses DDR Pad to Beat Ocarina of Time

Surprisingly, the fight is pretty fluid, as “ATwerkinYoshi” relies on some pretty fancy footwork to take down Ganondorf in a considerably short spell. Although, after weeks on end of playing in such a strange and constrictive manner, it’s highly likely that a lot of gamers would get the hang of it with so much practice.

Regardless of whether or not people think this is a wise use of one’s time, at least nobody can say that the guy doesn’t see his tasks through to the very end. In fact, “ATwerkinYoshi” is considering playing even more Nintendo 64 games in the future using the dance pad as a controller. With that in mind, it definitely would be funny to see him take on one of the console’s fighting game ports like Killer Instinct or Super Smash Bros ., as his feet will likely have to move more furiously to execute combos.

Bearing the above The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time playthrough in mind, what’s the weirdest way you’ve seen a gamer beat a title? Did it involve different controller types or an unusual set of predetermined parameters?

Hitman Game Delayed Until 2016

Hitman Game Delayed Until 2016

Yet another game delayed to 2016. This time around it’s IO Interactive’s latest Hitman game, announced by the developers today that the game’s initial release date will be pushed to March 2016 from it’s initial December 2015 release.

The move, announced on the game’s official site, was due to the overwhelming large scale of the game in contrast to prior games of the series. “It’s safe to say HITMAN is the biggest venture we’ve ever undertaken at Io-Interactive. Not just in terms of scope and ambition but also in terms of the size of the game world itself” the development team explains.

An example posted along the announcement of the move demonstrates exactly how ambitious the development team is in terms of the game’s size. The largest level in Hitman: Absolution “Streets of Hope” is compared side by side with the largest level in the new Hitman “Paris – The Showstopper” in which the latter is a whopping 6X larger by scale. A comparison of the amount of targets for Contracts Mode is listed as well.

LinkedIn will let Connectifier live on, but changes are coming to the recruiting service

“We’ve spent a lot of time in the last few weeks learning about each other, and figuring out the path forward, especially in terms of the best way to create economic opportunity for both our members and our loyal customers,” LinkedIn head of talent solutions Eduardo Vivas wrote in a .

LinkedIn today announced its initial plan for integrating recruiting service Connectifier, which LinkedIn acquiredearlier this year. Connectifier will get to live on as a standalone service, with some changes.

. “Today, we’re proceeding with Connectifier as a wholly owned subsidiary of LinkedIn.

“So, what does this mean? Connectifier will sell to their customers and we will sell to ours, but since there is a tremendous amount of crossover between our customer base, we see great opportunities for collaboration in a way that is going to benefit the recruiting industry as a whole.”

The decision puts Connectifier on a similar level as Lynda.com, which LinkedIn acquired for $1.5 billion, in the sense that the services get to remain independent. Other acquisitions, like Bizo and Bright (where Vivas previously worked), have been rebranded.

A new application programming interface (API) will bring improvements to Connectifier.

“Connectifier will deliver more accurate profile matches and more complete profile data via a new Connectifier-LinkedIn API integration, improving data quality and replacing profile information from third party sites which was sometimes incomplete or inaccurate,” Connectifier founder John Jersin — who is now head of LinkedIn Recruiter — wrote in a blog postof his own. As for LinkedIn Recruiter, its Auto Search will see “significantly improved profile matches,” according to Jersin.

Connectifier will allow users to more easily email candidates “on more profiles than before,” Jersin wrote. Phone numbers and links to candidates’ social media profiles will no longer be available in the tool.

But Connectifier is also going to concentrate on a more narrow subset of customers.

“We are focusing on our core market, as such, Connectifier will now only be available to recruiting professionals filling roles in the United States,” Jersin wrote. “Those affected will be contacted by a Connectifier representative for any applicable refunds to those specific accounts.”

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Beat While Blindfolded

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Beat While Blindfolded

638
One player takes on the challenge of a lifetime, and livestreams his successful attempt at beating The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time completely blindfolded.

When it comes to revisiting older titles, many gamers attempt to spice things up by imposing certain limitations for themselves while playing. However, it’s not every day that a fan attempts to take on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time while blindfolded to beat the pants off of it.

YouTuber Runnerguy2489 recently decided he was up to the seemingly Sisyphean task, and accomplished the goal in a final livestream that clocks in at a little over three hours—the whole feat itself took 100+ hours—and saved Hyrule without using his eyesight at all. What’s even more impressive, not only did he finish The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ‘s story, but he also did it with a 100% completion rate, which means he knocked out all of the mini-games, collected all the heart pieces, and killed every single Gold Skulltula.

Obviously, Runnerguy2489 spent numerous hours learning how to interact with the environments without using his vision, relying mostly on in-game sound effects and music cues. Also, interestingly enough, he used a lot of mathematical methods to find out where in the open world Link was, with one being the counting of backsteps while being parallel with walls.

Earlier this year the YouTuber played through the first three dungeons of the game blindfolded for the charity organization Awesome Games Done Quick 2015, who managed to raise over $1.5 million for Prevent Cancer Foundation. During the same event, another runner used the blindfolded method and ended up beatingin its entirety.

This definitely isn’t the first time that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been finished in a strange, yet endearing manner. A while back, one player beat the game using a DDR padinstead of an N64 controller. Not to mention, there are many who have attempted to polish off the game as quickly as possible, with seventeen-year-old “skater82297” setting the world record for the fastest speedrunof Ocarina of Time earlier this year.

Of course, video games are meant to be seen to be enjoyed, so Runnerguy2489 takes the cake when it comes to making it as difficult as he could for the defeat of Gannon. Bearing that in mind, his undertaking will definitely go down as one of the most imposing, and creative accomplishments in gaming, especially considering the full set of stats for the run.

Taking into account the myriad ways fans are still enjoying The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time , the Nintendo 64 game undoubtedly remains one of the medium’s all-time classic titles.

Nintendo R&D; The Weirdest Products They\’ve Ever Made

Nintendo R&D; The Weirdest Products They\’ve Ever Made

Nintendo is a company that is known for their ability to come up with new and innovative ideas for the video game landscape.

Nintendo is a company that is known for their ability to come up with new and innovative ideas for the video game landscape. From perfecting the directional pad on the Super Nintendo to the revolution of motion control gaming on the Wii, Nintendo is a legendary force to be reckoned with. Many ideas are iconic; however, that doesn\’t mean they aren\’t strange — make that very strange! I\’ve comprised a list of the wackiest hardware that we have seen in video game history.

1. R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy)

Release: July 1985

R.O.B., primarily known as \”R.O.B. the Robot,\” had a very short product lifespan and supported only a few games. He also received commands via optical flashes on your TV. Once the screen lit up, R.O.B. was ready to receive one of his six commands. Nintendo had high hopes for the hardware and, though he wasn\’t around for long, he will never be forgotten. Hell, maybe he will show up in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS !

2. Vitality Sensor

Release: Never

The Vitality Sensor is a cancelled accessory for the Wii. It was first announced by Satoru Iwata during Nintendo\’s E3 press conference in 2009. There is very little known about the Vitality Sensor and how it would have been integrated into video games. It has been suggested by Iwata that it would have been used to relax the player, informing them about their heartbeat and body. I think Nintendo made the right decision to not move forward with this odd piece of hardware;  it would have added very little to a gaming experience.

3. 2DS

Release: October 2013

The Nintendo 2DS was announced in August 2013; soon after that, the handheld was released on October 12th, 2013 to coincide with the launch of Pokémon X and Y . The announcement came as a surprise to everyone. Hearing the name \”2DS\” for the first time was awkward and felt weird just saying it out loud. However, like most of the Big N’s products, names like \”Wii\” and \”2DS\” become natural after a short while. Funny how Nintendo has the ability make the most bizarre names work out in the end.

4. Virtual Boy

Release: August 1995

The Virtual Boy is a short-lived virtual reality console that Nintendo ran after the SNES. The idea of virtual reality gaming was grand, but Nintendo\’s Virtual Boy just couldn\’t be executed properly, given the hardware restraints at the time. Now, just about twenty years after its release, we are finally seeing other video game manufacturers using today\’s technology to work on virtual reality headsets, like the Oculus Rift and Sony\’s Morpheus. I\’m sure we will be hit by a tidal wave of awesome experiences using VR in the near future. Maybe Nintendo will take a whack at virtual reality again?

5. Game Boy Micro

Release: September 2005

The Game Boy Micro was officially unveiled by Nintendo at the company\’s E3 press conference in 2005. Oddly enough, this Game Boy SKU released after the Nintendo DS and was the last console for the original Game Boy line. The lifespan was short, seeing that the Nintendo DS was dominating in sales. The Micro is unique, to say the least; it was and still is the smallest dedicated gaming device you can find and even came with the function to swap out multiple face plates. You can still find these bad boys new on Amazon for around $250 USD.

6. Power Glove

Release: 1989

The Power Glove is a controller accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was a bit of a let down due to its wonky control setup. Two games were released with specific features for the Power Glove: Super Glove Ball , a \”3D puzzler,” and Bad Street Brawler , a “beat \’em up.” Both games were playable with the standard NES controller as well but included moves that can only be used with the Power Glove. Although it was tough to use, it will always be an iconic Nintendo accessory.

7. Pocket Sonar

Release: 1998

The Game Boy Pocket Sonar was a peripheral for the Game Boy made by Bandai Namco that used sonar to locate fish underwater for the real life sport of fishing. No, this is not a joke — it actually exists! It also had a fishing mini-game built in! I can\’t make this up!

8. Circle-Pad Pro

Release: October 2009

The Circle-Pad Pro is a controller add-on that adds one additional circle-pad to the 3DS. This bulky accessory is compatible with games like Monster Hunter 3G and Resident Evil: Revelations . It opened up a lot of possibilities for the 3DS; sadly, it isn\’t utilized as much as gamers hoped for. Many people bashed on its design due to its \”boat-like\” qualities. With the recent announcement of the “ New Nintendo 3DS\” and it featuring a second control stick, maybe that will give developers the incentive to integrate it into their games.

9. Power Pad

Release: 1988

The Power Pad floor mat is a controller for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is a gray mat with twelve pressure sensors embedded between two layers of flexible plastic. The Power Pad was implemented into a total of eleven games on the NES. In hindsight, this accessory foreshadowed what was to come in the future with games like Dance Dance Revolution that also used a floor mat as a controller.

Release: Never

I am pretty sure this one speaks for itself.

Blind Gamer Beats The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Blind Gamer Beats The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

506
A blind gamer completes the final boss fight in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Tim e after five years of working through the game with just the help of his hearing.

There’s no denying that, for the most part, video games are an incredibly visual medium. Although sound and touch are crucial to the experience as well, it’s hard to imagine completing any game without being able to see the screen. One incredibly dedicated blind gamer has overcome this obstacle and managed to beatwith just the help of the game’s sounds.

Terry Garrett lost his sight when he was ten years old, but he had already had fallen in love with gaming. In the following years Terry refused to give up his hobby and learned how to make his way through games relying on sound, rather than sight (much like he does in the real world). Terry has completed lots of games using this technique, including. As you might expect, some games make this technique more difficult than others. Ocarina of Time is definitely on the more challenging side of the scale.

We’ve seen someone beat Ocarina blindfoldedbefore, but that is completely different from Terry’s experience, because he wasn’t able to memorize the game before playing it. Instead, Terry spent five years practicing and working through the experience. He documented his final battle with Ganon to showcase his skill and technique…

Terry admits that he uses walkthroughs and and helpful fan-made videos to help him tackle the game’s puzzles and obstacles, but when it comes to gameplay he relies entirely on his hearing. Terry thanked all of his friends and fans for following along with his journey through one of the best ( and rainiest) games of all time…

“It has been long in the making, but I have finally accomplished my goal! Who knows what is next! Thanks for all those who have stuck with me through this series even after it seemed like I was giving up. Please enjoy the last vid of Zelda OOt , the final battle against Gannon!”

We can’t imagine the skill and dedication it would take to pull this off, but Game Rant definitely tips its hat to Jerry and everything he has accomplished. We look forward to following his YouTube channel and finding out what game he plans to tackle next.

What do you think of Terry’s accomplishment? What other games would you like to see him tackle? Let us know in the comments.

Twitter’s Periscope broadcasts 200 million streams in its first year

Twitter’s Periscope broadcasts 200 million streams in its first year

This weekend, Periscope celebrated its one-year anniversary by revisiting some of the broadcasts that have been on the service.

This weekend, Periscope celebrated its one-year anniversary by revisiting some of the broadcasts that have been on the service. And what an active 12 months it has been. Periscope has gone from being a startup to being acquired to rising to prominence within Twitter’s ranks as a major pillar of the company’s efforts to gain momentum.

To highlight how much potential Periscope has, Twitter revealed today that 200 million broadcasts have been hosted within the app, 100 million of which were created in just the past three months alone. In addition, 110 years worth of live video is watched per day across Periscope’s iOS and Android apps, which represents a 91 percent increase from last August.

Two statistics from Periscope's one-year anniversary

Above: Two statistics from Periscope’s one-year anniversary

Periscope’s launch on March 26, 2015came just as its main competitor at the time, Meerkat, started to gain traction at the South by Southwest conference. But midway through the interactive portion of the festival, Twitter announced it was severing access to its API, a shot across Meerkat’s bow in favor of Periscope. Fast forward to a year later: Meerkat has pivoted, and the live video market is starting to get crowded with the introduction of Facebook Liveand soon YouTube Connect.

While Periscope’s numbers appear strong, it’s difficult to see how they stack up against those of its competitors since none of them have publicly released their metrics. However, as with Facebook and Snapchat, Periscope says that it pays attention to the time spent watching videos (how long someone watches a live broadcast on the iOS and Android apps) above all else.

Twitter has placed a lot of weight on Periscope, especially as it focuses its vision around live events. In an interview with Bloomberg , CEO Jack Dorsey statedthat his company’s role in the world “still centers around bringing people together to watch live events in the place where information comes the fastest.” And to show how important a role he believes Periscope will play in Twitter’s future, in February Dorsey elevatedthe head of the live streaming video service to his executive team.

In the past year, Periscope has certainly accomplished a lot. It quickly launched on iOS and Androiddevices and is viewable on the Web. It became one of the first apps to debut on the Apple TV. New features have been rapidly added to the service, such as landscape support, web profiles, the ability to skip ahead in replays, GoPro video support, and viewing streams within tweets.

A timeline of Periscope's achievements in the past year.

Above: A timeline of Periscope’s achievements in the past year.

To say there’s a lot riding on Periscope might be an understatement. Twitter has seen its growth stagnate — last quarter it reported 320 million monthly active users; the same number as the previous quarter.

Twitter wouldn’t comment on any Periscope notables, but people are using Periscope to report on events around the world, such as the Nepal earthquake, the Baltimore uprisings, and the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe. Popular stars like Jamie Foxx, Chris Hardwick, John Mayer, and others have joined Periscope. In the next year, we may start to see the Periscope equivalent of “YouTube stars,” video creators who become celebrities.

Another question that may be answered in the next year is just how the service will be monetized. Companies that are already trying their handat capitalizing on live streaming include Blumhouse, which produced the first live horror movie on Periscope, called Fifteen , and General Electric, which used live footage from the video service to showcase its vast fields of clean energy wind turbines from the air.

The race to become the top live streaming app is on, with Facebook doubling down on the same big opportunity that Twitter sees. But Twitter isn’t just fighting for video supremacy — it’s looking for a way to save itself, and it’s hoping Periscope can play a big part in that.

Things are really starting to heat up on the virtual reality headset front.

Things are really starting to heat up on the virtual reality headset front. First, Valve Corporation, developer of the Steam Machine brand, decides to partner up with Oculus Rift , and then Sony, an entity that’s never too proud to ape its rival’s designs begins dropping hints of a similar project for PlayStation. It’s the motion control arms race all over again.

Luckily, the intrepid gamers of the Internet are on hand to lend a little whimsy to the argument. Last month, Game Rant reported on an interesting spin on the new technology, that saw individual devs retool retro classics for first-person play. The idea, it seems is catching — and now, tens, if not hundreds of old-school remakes are on their way down the bright green pipeline.

The latest examples to hit the web, courtesy of developers DarkAkuma, Apex Studios and YouTube user Chadtronic, center on three of Nintendo’s best-loved series. The first, Mario Kart — available to check out above – features a remixed version of the Double Dash track Mario Circuit, now viewed from a near-wheel’s eye perspective.

Playtest no.2 features beloved Zelda title Ocarina of Time, with players now adopting a new behind-the-eyeballs view of Kokiri Forest. As is typical of these Oculus Riftremakes, the action appears that much more immediate and involvingthan do the standard titles, with boulders bearing down on Link ala Raiders of the Lost Ark .

Video number three continues the Nintendo trend with a look at the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker . Unfortunately, the port still requires a few bug-squashing, glitch-grabbing fixes, with certain items, like the bow and arrow and King of Red Lions boat failing to respond to free-look commands.

As Chadtronic himself states during the playthrough, even the act of walking up and down a sandy beach benefits greatly from the added immersion of the Oculus Rift. Of course, many of these titles were never designed with such connectivity and immersion in mind, though their obvious suitability does bode well for those games that are designed for VR, not to mention with much better graphics.

What other retro titles deserve an Oculus Rift makeover? Is the technology destined for greatness or gimmick status? How should these games be reworked to accommodate VR control? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check in with all of the latest Nintendo news, right here on Game Rant.

The latest Mario Kart outing – Mario Kart 8 will appear in stores and online — via the Nintendo eShop – on May 30, 2014.

Release the doves and pop the champagne because someone has transcribed The Legend of Zelda timeline from Hyrule Historia , a 274-page art book celebrating the 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda , that features concept and promotional art from throughout the franchises’ lifespan, including historical information on the games and the characters.

, that features concept and promotional art from throughout the franchises’ lifespan, including historical information on the games and the characters. Gamers can be at peace finally knowing the truth behind the chronological order of how the games should be played out.

Last week on December 21st, to cap off the celebration of Link’s 25th anniversary, Hyrule Historia hit store shelves in Japan (¥3,255/$41), and since then images have been sprouting up all over the place. The only problem here is that those who have been posting the images do not know how to speak/read/write Japanese. Luckily for us, one gamer has transcribed a particular YouTube video that focused in on the the official timeline for The Legend of Zelda . A Photoshop document of the timeline has been created in English to help those who would like to know how each game paves a path to set up this glorious franchise.

Many helpful Japanese gamers have uploaded pictures and videos of Hyrule Historia, making everyone stateside very jealous of its release. The video below hosts a 23-minute long preview of the art book, and those of you who dabble in Japanese may find it very insightful. At the 4:55 mark, the video gets into the timeline, giving a full picture of how the events of The Legend of Zelda unfold.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W77ry6Srx_I

After that video had been published online, video game translator GlitterBerri went to work jotting down all that had been revealed into a working English translation. GlitterBerri created a rough Photoshop copy of the timeline, and with the help of another Zelda fan, remade the Japanese timeline in English in a more aesthetically pleasing version. Click on the image below to enlarge the image and get the full high-resolution version:

This timeline makes a very interesting conversation piece for any gamers at the dinner table. Many have speculated that after, the series’ timeline had split into two separate chains of events. Now we can all see that there is a third alternate universe that has been laid out after the events of OoT . If a Zelda spin-off gameshould occur, would it skew the very fabric of the timeline, or could it be made to coincide with the events of current timelines?

Ranters! Does this timeline of events make sense to you, and who’s ready to start playing The Legend of Zelda all over again from the beginning of the timeline to the end?

There is no official release date in the US or other countries for Hyrule Historia.

You may be thinking “68 levels?! That’s more than all the Hitman franchise levels put TOGETHER. Probably.” But this isn’t your typical Hitman game. You won’t be slinking around massive levels picking off unfortunate guards or ducking into hampers and iceboxes with your garrote strung tight as your target approaches. At least not exactly.

Gamer Sets New World Record for ‘Ocarina of Time’ Speedrun

Another day, another video game record shattered.

Another day, another video game record shattered. Last year, a player who goes by the handle Cosmomade a name for himself by beating Nintendo’s classic adventure game, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time , in 18 minutes, 10 seconds. It was amazing. Nobody would ever beat that, right? Well…

As it turns out, Cosmo’s moment in the sun only lasted for a few months. Last winter, a player named Jodenstone challenged Cosmo’s record, and shaved three seconds off of the record time, reducing Link’s epic journey to 18 minutes, 7 seconds. That was good enough to secure the Any% world record for the fastest run through(Any% is short for “anything goes,” meaning that players can use glitches to get through the game). Unfortunately for Jodenstone, his accomplishment didn’t last, either.

A new video making the rounds shows a player named skater82297 absolutely decimating Jodenstone’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time record, finishing the game in an unprecedented 17:47 – twenty seconds faster than the previous run.

To break the record, Skater used the Japanese edition of Ocarina , running on the Wii Virtual Console. Text moves faster in the Japanese version of the game, giving speed runners a few extra seconds. In addition, Skater uses a glitch that relies on a so-called “emulation bug” (meaning that it doesn’t appear in the original version of the game, when it runs on its native hardware).

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Speed Run

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Speed Run

The Virtual Console is a crucial factor in Skater’s success. Cosmo set the record playing Ocarina of Time on a Chinese device called the iQue Player, which has quicker load times and faster text than the original Nintendo 64. However, the glitch that Skater uses to get the in-game bottle crashes the game on the iQue; using the Virtual Console guarantees that Skater can use this glitch, and still the game.

By the way: skater82297 is only seventeen. Breaking a world record will look pretty good on those college applications – assuming that he got any school work done during his 1,567 previous attempts at the title.

Speedrunning has always been a popular, if niche, activity in the video game community, and it’s only getting more popular thanks to the rise of YouTube and video game streaming sites like Twitch. Speedrunning isn’t just about glory and ego, either: a few months ago, a bi-annual speedrunning event called Awesome Games Done Quickraised over $1.5 million for charity.

Skater’s Any% achievement is just one of many The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time speedrunning records. The fastest time for a “glitchless” run, 3:44:24, was set by Makai just last month. Makai also holds the record for a glitchless 100% run – finish the game and collect all of the available items, using no glitches – with a time of 5:57:38.

First Trailer of Upcoming ‘Hitman’ Movie Released

Everyone’s favorite bald assassin is getting his second feature film, this one titled Hitman Agent 47 , and distributor 20th Century Fox today put out the movie’s first trailer.

Set to an electronic remix of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Child’, the trailer depicts 47, played by Homeland star Rupert Friend, being interrogated by a government agent. After delivering a cringe-worthy “No, Mr. Sanders. You’re locked in here with me, ” the trailer ramps up the action considerably, showing 47 taking out various foes in hand to hand combat . Cut in between all this are various shots of explosions, fast cars, guns blazing, and a helicopter crashing spectacularly into a building.

Speedrunner Shows How He Beat ‘Ocarina of Time’ In 18 Minutes

Speedrunner Shows How He Beat ‘Ocarina of Time’ In 18 Minutes

432
For most gamers, the simple act of completing a game is a weighty enough accomplishment.

For most gamers, the simple act of completing a game is a weighty enough accomplishment. For others, true glory comes from achieving this task in the shortest amount of time possible. Whether this entails full completion of a given game or exploiting every known glitch, there’s a subset of speedrunners to match each taste. Arguably the most famous of the bunch is Cosmo who has – among other things – made a name for himself as the premiere Ocarina of Time speedrunner.

Having repeatedly shocked viewers with his skill at breezing through Ocarina of Time , Cosmo’s most recent accomplishment was completing the game in a mere 18 minutes and 10 seconds. Sound impossible? With the perfect execution of countless glitches, reflexes of steel, and years of practice, completing thisclassic in record time suddenly becomes a possibility. Even with video evidence, the task can be almost dizzying at times. This is where Cosmo himself steps in.

Following his record-breaking speedrun, Cosmo has released a videoexplaining exactly how this impressive feat was even possible. Not only does he use a Chinese cartridge and iQue Player for their shorter load times and faster text scrolling, but an accomplishment like this was not completed overnight. Rather, he has attempted over 1200 speedruns of the title prior to setting the latest bar. Take a look at the video below to get a glimpse inside his process.

While an accomplishment such as this is very much a personal success for Cosmo, it also marks an accomplishment for the speedrunning community as a whole. It is this kind of relentless experimentation and repetition that has led to the discovery of many of the glitches that made this run possible. Even more, successes like this act as further motivation for those within the community.

Focusing on the speedrun itself, it’s incredible to see a game that is so familiar to so many played in a way that seems completely foreign. Things that one might have taken for granted like the speed at which Link moves backward suddenly become integral to the game. It may not be as pretty as Link’s upcoming adventure, but it’s hard to deny that the completion of Ocarina of Time is still a sight to behold.

Success or not, it’s unlikely that this will be the last the gaming world hears of Cosmo’s involvement with Ocarina of Time . Outside of the world of speedrunning, the game will even be seeing a return in the upcomingwhich will see some familiar faces returning. Add to this the possibility of multiplayer in the upcoming Wii U Zelda titleand it’s clear that the next few years will be an exciting time for Link.

Do you think Cosmo or some other speedrunner will be able to complete Ocarina of Time in a faster time than 18 minutes and 10 seconds? Are modern games as capable of supporting speedrunners as classics like this?

Where LinkedIn went wrong — and how it can save itself

Where LinkedIn went wrong — and how it can save itself

LinkedIn’s valuation has been hotly debated by everyone from technology publications to Wall Street insiders in recent months.

LinkedIn’s valuation has been hotly debated by everyone from technology publications to Wall Street insiders in recent months. According to Morgan Stanley’sanalysts, “continued faster than expected deceleration and/or misexecution will likely cause the stock to be range-bound (best case) or trend toward our bear case valuation (US$60/share).”

Some have argued that the mechanics of the network make it nothing more than a spam engine. Others, like Morgan Stanley, have argued that we overestimated growth based on LinkedIn’s newer product offerings, such as Lynda and Sales Navigator.

Of course, it’s no surprise that the tech world blames product design and network effects and the large financial institutions chalk it up to “mis-execution.”

But is it really that simple? I find it hard to believe that a juggernaut like LinkedIn suddenly lost the ability to execute. You can argue that LinkedIn’s ads and recruiting tools need refinement, but that hardly explains the company losing half its value. LinkedIn has actually been quite successful with its advertising network; it saw a 20% increase in revenue generated by LinkedIn ads last year. So what’s really going on?

For those familiar with social networks and enterprise software, it’s no mystery: LinkedIn has a business model conflict.

LinkedIn is a social network masquerading as an enterprise software company. The tension between those two models is literally ripping the company apart and alienating users and enterprise customers alike. Such is the natural effect of the walled garden approach in social networks, where your relevance diminishes as you lock-down access.

I spy enterprise maneuvers

It’s impossible to be both a massive Internet-scale social network and an enterprise software company at the same time. The former depends on open platforms and third-party developers, the latter on proprietary software sold to businesses that expect measurable ROI.

Last year, LinkedIn closed off its APIand shut out enterprise software developers it saw as competitors, limiting customer choice, while putting the onus entirely on itself to serve the enterprise customer. Even worse, it used a broad definition of “competitive services.” As a result, solutions and specialized capabilities that LinkedIn has no intention or capacity to develop itself are also locked out of the walled garden.

This was the defining moment when the company began the shift towards enterprise software, and the strategy is already starting to backfire. The move left a lot of people hanging — not only third-party developers like Salesforce but also individual users of tools like Sales Navigator.

We’ve seen this before with Twitter, and we know how that story ends.

LinkedIn has become a jack of all trades and a master of none. It’s a mass-scale social network, an advertising platform, a recruiting technology solution provider, a sales-prospecting tool, an online training platform, and more — a veritable stack vendor in the age of no-stack software

Most importantly, it didn’t build that stack, it acquired it one piece at a time. The Bizo write-downis just one example. Analysts are already concerned that while LinkedIn’s largest acquisition, Lynda, is a market leader, CEO Jeff Weiner has statedit will “require greater investments than previously anticipated” to scale and integrate it.

It’s high time LinkedIn got back to what it’s truly good at – the stuff that got it to its peak not too long ago.

Righting the ship

LinkedIn needs to focus on what it does well and revive its social network business model to stimulate growth. That starts with selling ads and recruiting solutions — the core of LinkedIn’s business.

Ads are high-growth, particularly on mobile where Mary Meekercites 34% year-over-year growth.

Recruiting solutions play to LinkedIn’s strength: the size and orientation of its network. Even more importantly, it’s the one area where business customers and individual users are aligned. Companies need help filling jobs, and consumers need help getting jobs.

LinkedIn’s own researchpoints out that “finding candidates in high-demand talent pools” is the top obstacle for recruiters this year. Who better than LinkedIn to help solve that problem? After all, talent solutions are LinkedIn’s biggest revenue driver.

But none of that matters to the company’s long-term sustainability if it doesn’t open up its APIs again — and more broadly than before. Through monetizing access to its APIs, LinkedIn will be tapping a dormant, but lucrative, revenue stream. Enterprise developers are willing to pay for access because they understand the value of data and access to the world’s largest professional network. LinkedIn can leave it to enterprise-focused companies to build a high-value layer on top of the network, provide customers with choice, specialization, and quality, and get a healthy piece of the action.

Any number of monetization models could work, and virtually all of them would give LinkedIn a risk-free path to sustainable, high-growth enterprise revenue — which, incidentally, is exactly what the analysts have been asking for.

LinkedIn should not be so bold as to assume it will forever have the monopoly in professional social networks; we’ve already seen a demand for alternative solutions emerge — together with several competitors. But what sets LinkedIn apart and what could be its ticket to renewed growth is its enormous social graph. To realize that value, all the company has to do is open up its API and let developers do what they do best.

None of this is rocket science. It’s just good old capitalism at work. If vendors, customers, and partners are all aligned, they all reap the rewards of a healthy ecosystem.

Facebook bug causes Lahore Safety Check notifications to be sent to those unaffected

in which dozens were killed by a suicide bomber. However, the activation didn’t function properly, as many in the U.S. and the U.K. received notifications from the social networking company asking them to check in and let their loved ones know that they’re safe. Facebook has since apologized, blaming the problem on a bug that it says has now been resolved.

Reports indicate that at least 63 people, mostly women and children, were killed and more than 300 injured during an attack on a children’s park in Lahore. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaatul Ahrar (TTP-JA), a splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban, is believed to have claimed responsibility.

Following the Paris terrorist attackslast year, Facebook drew criticismover its criteria for selecting which events to activate the Safety Check for. Facebook subsequently broadened its guidelines for when to implement the program, launching Safety Check in the aftermath of attacks in Nigeria, the floods in Chennai, India, earthquakes in northeast India and southern Taiwan, and attacks in Ankara, Turkey.

The premise of Safety Check is to allow users to notify their loved ones that they’re okay via Facebook. Originally unveiled following the devastating tsunami and earthquakethat struck Japan, the service invites those in the immediate area to mark themselves as safe. However, with the Lahore attack, something went wrong with the geographic range settings, something that the company says is “counter to the product’s intent.”

New Screenshots and Gameplay Footage for 3DS ‘Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’

New Screenshots and Gameplay Footage for 3DS ‘Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’

36
The details of Nintendo’s newest console have been released and people are obviously excited, yet while the hardware has a lot of people buzzing the games are even more intriguing.

Many Nintendo 64era games are getting the 3D treatment, including . Considered by many gamers to be one of the greatest games ever made, the inclusion of Ocarina of Time to the 3DS’ lineup was one of the biggest “Yes!” moments of this year’s E3. So while some may still be waiting for ‘, Nintendo released four new screenshots and a short look at some gameplay footage to help tide you over.

3DS Ocarina of Time 3DS Ocarina of Time

While most of the screenshots don’t show anything different than the original N64 version, one shot gives us a solid look at how the 3DS’ bottom screen will be used for inventory control (seen above). As you’d expect, the main subject of the bottom screen is the map, which appears to be controlled by touch and/or one of the three tabs at the bottom.  The X and Y buttons will take the place of the old ‘C’ buttons used for equipped items, while the ‘B’ button will be used for Links’ sword hacking.

Other then the inventory system, the screenshots revealed that the graphics have obtained a substantial upgrade. Everything from Link to the flowers he’s running past look a lot smoother and more vibrant than they ever did on the N64. It will be great to see in full 3D.

The gameplay footage simply reiterates the above information: better looking graphics, but not much change from the original. As you can see in the video below (starting at 2:27) the level shown looks like it’s the early ‘Great Deku Tree’ dungeon, and while it has been a few years since I’ve played through Ocarina of Time nothing seems too different. Though when you’re one of the greatest games of all time what do you need to change?

It’ll be interesting to see what 3D adds to such a iconic game when The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time released in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS sometime in the Spring of 2011.

This startup thinks it’s fixed the major flaw in dating apps like Tinder — and Apple just featured it as a ‘best new app’

This startup thinks it’s fixed the major flaw in dating apps like Tinder — and Apple just featured it as a ‘best new app’

One of the reasons Tinder has been such a resounding success is that it functions like a game.

Even if you never go on a date, swiping this way and that and seeing who thinks you’re attractive is just inherently fun.

But that’s a problem, according to Keisuke Kamijo, the CEO of Tokyo-based Mrk & Co., which recently launched a new dating app — called Dine— in the U.S. and Canada.

The goal of Dine is to get you from a match to that first dinner or drinks date as quickly as possible.

A charming text conversation, especially with a complete stranger, is not necessarily a perfect indicator of whether you’ll be compatible. That’s why Dine tries to get you in the same room.

Mrk & Co. was founded by veterans of Japanese gaming giant DeNA, which Nintendo partnered with to bring its games to smartphones for the first timelast year. But Dine strips most of the game-like elements out of its dating app, relying instead on a smooth path toward an actual date. Apple was impressed enough with the concept to feature it on its list of “best new apps.”

Here’s how Dine works.

After filling out a profile, you pick three restaurants or bars (there’s Yelp integration) where you’d like to go on a date. Dine then shows you two to five people a day, and which place they chose, and you can request to go on a date with that person at that particular place.

Once you send someone a date request and they accept, a chat box opens so you can get some sense of whether you have any chemistry. But having the restaurant or bar right there at the start makes the situation feel much less nebulous than chatting on Tinder.

Kamijo gives a rough estimate that about half of accepted requests lead to actual dates within two weeks, based on data from the beta testing Dine did in Vancouver. Now Dine has launched to all of the U.S. and Canada (though you’ll have better luck where there is higher population density).

I tried Dine in New York City. Here’s what it was like:

First, you select where you are. You can be anywhere in the U.S. or Canada, but the cities below are where Dine is trying to make a big push.

first-you-select-where-you-are-you-can-be-anywhere-in-the-us-or-canada-but-the-cities-below-are-where-dine-is-trying-to-make-a-big-push

Then you select three restaurants or bars. They can be your favorites or ones you have wanted to check out.

You also set up a standard dating-app profile, although one interesting feature is that Dine will auto-sort your pictures based on which ones are proving to be most popular.

Of the photos Dine pulled from my Facebook, the one with the puppy is the most popular. People were not as into my college-era long hair.

You get to select a bunch of descriptors, and though some of them are a bit over-the-top, at least you don’t have to be witty right off the bat. You can also select “It’s my treat,” if you want to pay for the first date, or “Let’s meet with friends,” if you don’t want to go on a solo date.

Then you’re shown matches, two to five a day, along with their respective choice of restaurant.

then-youre-shown-matches-two-to-five-a-day-along-with-their-restaurant-respective-choice-of-restaurant

If you click on their picture, you can see their full profile, including things like education, height, religion, job, and so on. (If they have filled out their profile completely.)

if-you-click-on-their-picture-you-can-see-their-full-profile-including-things-like-education-height-religion-job-and-so-on-if-they-have-them-filled-out

If someone chooses you, you’ll see a request that looks like this.

if-someone-chooses-you-youll-see-a-request-that-looks-like-this

You accept not just the person, but the specific restaurant or bar as well.

you-accept-not-just-the-person-but-the-specific-restaurant-or-bar-as-well

Now it’s time to send a message. Dine will auto-populate it, but you can customize it as well.

now-its-time-to-send-a-message-dine-will-auto-populate-it-but-you-can-customize-it-as-well

Once you’ve sent it, a chat window pops up. You can chat just as you would in an app like Tinder, but it feels much more focused on the logistics of meeting up.

Once you have gotten a few requests or chats, they appear in your inbox.

To streamline the process, you can also swipe through a list of people’s pictures, so the app can gauge your preferences. This doesn’t lead to matches, but it helps Dine suggest better potential dates for you in the future.

And, of course, there is a “premium” tier that lets you request certain users Dine deems to be the most popular. Though this is a way to make the so-called premium tier seem more attractive and to limit the number of requests popular users are inundated with, it feels like it has the potential to frustrate users who are deemed “popular,” as they will only get requests from paying users, who might not be their ideal matches. Kamijo said the company is also interested in making money through partnerships with restaurants down the line.
