Batman: Arkham Knight Leads Software Sales for June; PS4 Still On Top

There’s no doubt developer Rocksteady was disappointed by the issues that plagued the PC version of the recently released Batman: Arkham Knight .

. In fact, those issues were so bad, the developer was forced to cancel game sales and refund gamers who purchased the game.

However, despite those issues, Rocksteady’s third and final entry in the Arkham game franchise outperformed every other game during the month of June, including The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited , which released earlier in the month on consoles. That’s a fairly impressive feat considering the’s challenges.

Liam Callahan, an analyst with The NPD Group, the firm behind the sales analysis, offered some thoughts on the success of Batman: Arkham Knight in June:

“Sales of Arkham Knight slightly exceeded October 2011 sales of Batman: Arkham City, which is remarkable considering the difference in hardware install bases… If sales were included from hardware bundles, Arkham Knight is the best-selling game of 2015 so far.”

That’s a pretty big statement. Sure, the analyst mentions that’s only if console bundlesare counted, but it’s still a pretty decent achievement and one that’s sure to make Rocksteady happy.

Besides Batman: Arkham Knight , a few other games also had strong sales in June. The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited , LEGO: Jurassic World , The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , and Splatoon rounded out the top five best sellers of the month.

Among consoles, PlayStation 4 once again claimed the top spot, outselling Xbox One by a healthy margin, despite the Xbox’s strong bungle offerings. However, the month was a win for consoles as a whole, which saw an eight percent increase in sales over last year.

Software, too, is well ahead of last year’s sales. Callahan shared some thoughts on the matter:

“This is the fourth month of year-over-year increases so far in 2015 for software. Through the first half of the year, software is up 3 percent. With a strong lineup of games for the remainder of the year, there is the potential for a positive growth in the second half of the year as well.”

With a good year so far, and a strong lineup for this fall, it’s likely those figures will only go up.
