Rocket League: Collector’s Edition , the physical version of Psyonix’s quirky sports-with-cars game, will debut with some brand new vehicles to commemorate the launch.
The equal parts bizarre and inspiring success story of Rocket League shows no signs of slowing down. 505 Games, the publisher behind the mash-up of demolition derby and soccer that has been one of the most popular multiplayer games in recent memory, announced that the physical version ofwill be coming to North American retailers on July 5. European, Middle Eastern, and African gamers will be able to purchase the title slightly earlier on June 24.
It has already been confirmed that Rocket League ‘s physical edition will come with the base game and previously released expansion packs like Supersonic Fury, Revenge of the Battle-Cars, and Chaos Run. 505 also revealed that the Collector’s Edition will feature four brand new vehicles that haven’t appeared on digital versions of the game, leading fans to begin speculating on which famous vehicles might be added to Rocket League next. Unfortunately, no further details were forthcoming, so for the time being gamers will have to make due with ‘s already impressive roster of custom carsand iconic vehicles.
While it seems nearly ubiquitous with fun, casual multiplayer gaming now, Rocket League was released less than a year ago. Part of the game’s familiarity comes with its meteoric rise as one of the most pleasant gaming surprises of 2015, winning multiple awards along the way to becoming some critics’ choice for Game of the Year. Although some smaller development teams struggle to translate their game’s critical success into profit, Psyonix has had no such trouble, as has made well over $50 million in salesover the title’s short shelf life.
It’s that kind of financial stability that has allowed Psyonix to explore other ideas for Rocket League ‘s devoted fanbase beyond an ever-increasing variety of cars to choose from. ‘s Hoops Mode will arrive sometime in April, allowing players to take their cars to the Dunk House map to swap out their astroturf and soccer nets for hardwood floors and backboards.
Of course, in the gaming world, a developer is only as relevant as its latest game. Psyonix has also gone on record stating that the independent studio has a massive backlog that it would like to reveal someday, meaning the unique brand of multiplayer that made Rocket League a success might not be limited to just one game in the near future.
